Audi A6 C7/4G side mirrors heating problem fix (partial mirror disassembly)

Фильм және анимация

PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION FIRST !
At this very moment, I do have:
0 driver side EU pads available
0 passenger side (EU) pads available
ALL GONE BY NOW.. I'm very sorry..
I will keep the video online for you to troubleshoot the problem.. maybe it will still help someone
Long story short:
I'm a owner of an A6 4G that had problems with heating pad in the past on my very own car. Figured out there is no solution for this kind of issue except pay full price (almost 600eur now for heated autodimmed glass). Wasn't happy about that at all so created a solution. This was very very time consuming and also bit pricy because they also had to produce some amount of theese pads especially for me so the manufacturing process will make sence (economically). So I designed, communicated, paid, waited, tested, etc.
This isn't a business to me. If I will run out of the pads, I will not produce more.. I will keep this video tutorial alive so you can at least diagnose the problem.
There is few more info in the comments.
Whole story with the all details is explained in the Czech Audiklub forum.
Thank you for understanding
Audi A6 C7 4G (2011 - 2018)
How to diagnose and fix the the heating issue with the side heated/auto-dimmed mirrors. By previous experience , the most common problem is the heated pad that is often failing. There are burn out spots or the connector will stop to have any contact. Either way, the defective pad can be replaced while keeping your original glass with auto-dimmed feature.
MOST IMPORTANT PART IS TO MEASURE THE PAD IMPEDANCE!
If you have 0 Ohms impedance = your pad is defective
If you have 4-5 Ohms impedance and your side mirror is not heating up = problem is elsewhere (most likely wiring or the fuse)
If you have VCDS diagnostic, you will see the error log saying something like this:
Address 42: Door Elect, Driver (J386) Labels: None
Part No SW: 4G8 959 793 H HW: 4G8 959 793 F
1 Fault Found:
00920 - Heated Outside Mirrors; Driver Side (Z4) / Passenger Side (Z5)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

Thank you.. it was challenging because this isn't my area at all.. Just to make the video, comment it and cut it is very time consuming. To answer your initial question. It's custom made espacially for me. I've contacted several Chinease factories that I hardly found on Internet and told them what I wanted. And I just needed one piece of this pad for my own broked A6 C7 side mirror. Nobody is interested to produce it in such a small numbers product that doesn't exist on the market. Every single factory wanted an order 5000-10000$+ just to talk to you. Payment in advance.. Found a one and we agreed on 5 pairs, 10 pieces.. Created a layout in Adobe Illustrator, exchanged like 50 emails about multiple issues (cuts offs, connector types, soldering, protection etc). Diffucult from EU do deal with China. Figured out, that ristricted use of Internet in there.. simply, another world.. This all took like 6 weeks altogether. After one year I had sell all remaining 9 pieces (mostly in Czech and Slovak Audi community). All my initial investement had returned back to me with 0 profit :) but that wasn't a goal for me .. I just wanted to have it fix. It's fixed, working for almost a one year now .. cost me 30EUR (after one year :)))

Yes, that's correct. I've got the email offer from the official dealer and also search for it online. Cheapest (new) one starts at 400eur.. Are u absolutely sure that is autodimmed version? Because there is the one without it that cost ca 80-90eur by dealer. Can you look at the part number directly on the mirror? PS: Do you think I would put that many effort into all this if the price wouldn't be like I'm saying? :)

@@mirinonr This morning I checked the model on my car. According to your instructions - I removed the damaged mirror only with my fingers, thanks for that! Then I called an Audi dealer and ordered a new mirror according to my chassis number, it is a model with self-dimming, same as yours! The price is 8.184rsd ( 70e ) netto + 11e for hands...Total 81e with VAT, maybe the price is like that in Serbia, because the standard is low here... Cheers and happy holidays !

Awesome video, I actually have a problem with my driver side window not heated up i checked the voltage and ohms voltage said 0 when only one wire connected but when I disconnected all wires and checked for ohms it ready about 2.4 ohms and I jiggled some wires and connected the mirror back on and it started heating up again so I’m not sure what the issue would be

I think most of the heated mirror problems come from foldable mirrors. Maybe the engineer at Audi has not taken into account the wire power wire length when the mirror is folded and it got pulled out from the connector when the mirror is folded 😄

All VAG mirrors of this type have a double-sided adhesive mat. When repairing, this can be replaced/retrofit with several strips of double-sided tape (Tessa, 3M etc.)

Hmm, interesting.. did you measure this voltage on booth sides? I would reckon that its a coroded connector contact at some point.. Try to clear the connector on the pad gently by scratching it with cutting knife or some non-agressive chemistry for contacts cleaning. I don't see how this is a problem with fuses..

Hi, This is bit tricky but easiest way (without dissassembly) would be this: At night, start the car. Take you mobile phone and turn on the flashlight. Do flash the light into internal back mirror, into the photo-resistor located on the bottom edge. You will shortly see that your outside mirrors will get total black (despite there is night outside) Unfortunately, if it doesn't work you don't know whre the problem is. Can be the internal mirror, can be some wiring, can be the outside side mirrors, fuse, etc But give it a try The other way is to dissasembly the mirror, use two cable and connect to the 1.5V AA battery. You will see that it will go dark in a while

Most likely the issue above. Run the VCDS diagnostics or at least the meter and check the voltage on plugs/resistance of the pad. We will be just guessing without these informations.

Great overview. I've figured out the same reason that all non-original heating mats have resistance 14.5 Ohms, where original one have 4.5 Ohms. I have similar mirror to yours but in A4 B8 FL (2014) but I didn't find any mat with resistance 4.5 Ohms. I bought universal heating mat where resistance is 14.5 Ohms. Result? No error in VCDS but it's heating much more slower than original one. Where did you order your custom heating mat? Maybe can you create (I mean sell ofc) the same for A4 B8 FL and sent it to me to Poland?

So I designed, communicated, paid, waited, tested, etc.. almost all is gone now, my investment paid back but i'm not making any profits on it. I do not care/mind. I just wanted to fix my own issue in the first place. Now with an EU tax/duty regulation for chinease goods, it make almost no sence to me. Last time I ordered a batch of 20 pieces and it took almost a year to sell it all to have the money back.. Its very seasonal, nobody cares that heating is not working in summer.. Maybe someone smarter, bussiness orientated and mostly someone with the drive and time would be able to do bussiness with it.. but it wont be me.. Therefore, I'm sorry.. no more A6 nor A4 heated pad from me
