AUDI A6/A7/S4 3.0T Coolant Leak, Supercharger-Off Water Pump + Thermostat Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

See more reinstall TIPS in the bottom of this summary. These are incredibly important to prevent a Check Engine Light after reinstalling the intake runner flap assembly.
This C7, 2012 A6 3.0t w/142K miles developed a pretty serious coolant leak from underneath the supercharger, but it was not where you would have expected it. In this video you will see the car with the front lock carrier in Audi Service Position, bumper cover removed, supercharger removed and a replacement of the water pump, thermostat, coolant pipe, vent pipe, etc. Use Google to find the removal and service position procedures as I did not have time to show the how-to in the video. After the front lower fender liners are removed, there is 6, 10mm bolts, 4 coarse torx screws, 1 washer fluid line, and various electrical connections to remove the bumper cover; depending on the car's options.
Some more tips for this job: the broken coolant pipe has several items mounted above it to remove before it can be torn out. The Intake runner flap and fuel rail assembly being one of them, which means the fuel connections from the high pressure fuel pump to the rail, and the line from the right rail that leads to the left rail need disconnecting, and several T30's holding the stainless fuel line down the top of the engine. Also, there are mounts on the coolant pipe that secure it to the rear, top of the engine that were very difficult to remove because of clearances. I used my micro 1/4" ratchet and 1/4" torx bits for these.
The MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE REINSTALL, has to do with placing the intake runner flaps in the correct position by folding them gently with your fingers, before threading in the (5?) torx bolts and 2, 10mm nuts on the top of the fuel rail. In each intake port, there is a thin metal divider. The intake runner flaps need to be turned down a tiny bit, so that the runner flaps will be able to fully open to 100%; exposing the valves. Which means the flaps need to be on the RIGHT SIDE of the thin metal divider (on Bank 1-pass side ports). If you DON'T move the flaps to the right a tiny bit, before pushing the assembly down, the flaps will be in a stuck closed state.
Please don't hesitate to leave a comment or question about any part of this job. I will not soon forget it.

    after inspecting the top area of the block, that was my exact issue. looking at the antifreeze spray and pudding locations, and the fact that that end of the hose was shaking and letting antifreeze by, indicated that was the culprit... disconnected the fuel line to get to the hose, removed the thermostat to get the pieces, replaced the hose, reinstalled the same thermostat and problem solved. didn't have to take off bumper either. good video! 👍🏾

    For anyone wondering about adjusting the flaps on the intake manifold for reinstalling them, it's a relatively easy process. You simple press them down to about vertical, hold them there, push the rail down ensuring that the flaps are on the side of the metal tabs/dividers, hold the rail down, put one of the retaining bolts in and screw it down. Then put the rest of the bolts on and torque to spec. I couldn't find a video out there so made one for our similar A7 and posted it.

    3.0tfsi are notorious for coolant leak if there is a coolant leak its probably pcv also known as crankcase breather and thermostat housing can leak too or the water if one of them leaks i recommend doing all three because around 100k miles all of them would leak the crossover pipe breaks just be ready and the coolant pipe above the pcv also know as crankcase breather would break too but i got lucky it didnt break but you can do this at home intermediate level of work but the engine actually pretty strong timing chains are really good on these engines just change your oil every 4k miles if its the dct transmission is perfect strong af. Never had a problem other than coolant issue

    I have an Audi A4. The dealer replaced the thermostat only due to a leak prior to purchasing the vehicle. After driving the car for a month I noticed a coolant smell after parking the car in the garage. Marked the coolant tank to see if the level dropped. It dropped 1/4 inch over a month. I can’t seem to find the leak. Seems odd they would replace the thermostat and not the water pump. My guess is one of the connections is worn or was damaged during the repair.

    Amazing Video! I am dealing with something similar and about to take the supercharger off as I can't pin point it. I assumed water pump as it leaks badly as soon as I pressure test it behind the pump, but it appears to be coolant leaking from just above the water pump everything about my water pump is dry. I am thinking it is this return pipe or the coolant cross over pipe, did you have a hard leak as well? Thanks

  • @stephencannon3140

    Good call on R/R the Thermostat and Water Pump at same time along with associated O-rings. A lot of items may not be the problem now but with 140K they probably wouldn’t be far behind. The extra cost of the T-stat and WP now will be well offset by the peace of mind and reduced work later. As long as it’s done correctly the W/P and T-stat are a good...While your in the neighborhood type of work. For 140K if you decide to remove the radiator for W/P access then radiator R/R would also be cheap insurance since you have to re install. Might as well reinstall a fresh new radiator. WP, T-stat, radiator and the two coolant pipes are a good start. The drawback is the timing belt probably won’t be too far behind at that mileage. Something to consider now instead of having to go back in later. If the OEM water pump lasted 140K miles then probably the replacement pump can last close to that assuming the rest of vehicle engine is good shape.

    Do you possibly have the part numbers for the o-rings? Specifically the one that goes to the thermostat from the cross pipe. Also did you have any problems installing the vent tube (06E103213)? ECS tuning says that this part doesn't fit a 2012 A6 3.0T

  • @MidknightMechanics

    Max I think n90316801 is the one you're asking about, but if you replace that $50ish pipe, it comes with a new o-ring on it. Also 06e103213 vent pipe is correct for the C7 3.0t. I checked my invoice from Audi, that is the correct PN- it stayed in place on it's own because of the guide pin built into it; no issues there.

    Great Video. I have the exact same issue. My pipe failure was due to overheating from blown, hidden, cooling fan fusible links center of the firewall under the support. The fans stopped working and my wife was running errands. In her defense no warning came up on the cluster. So, that caused the front coolant pipe to fail in the same manner. This year the heater pipe finally followed suit. Though most of the job is relatively difficult, the access to connections at the rear pipe to heater hose and retainers are mind boggling. Did you remove the small pcv box and pipes and the flex line to the valve behind the head? I have to make a torx tool for this one! Thanks again for taking the time to make the video.

  • @MidknightMechanics

    @MidknightMechanics

    4 жыл бұрын

    Appreciate the reply. How many miles on yours when that happened? I was praying to god car makers weren't still making and hiding those fusible links inline of power wires anymore. What a terrible design. I just replaced a few on a 1994 bmw 740i (under seat, carpet, under heat shrink tubing). I didn't remove the PCV box on the top of the engine, but i did remove the stainless fuel line, and intake runner flap assembly since they are right above that pipe. It was a challenge. The worst part was exactly what you mentioned, those small torx holding that pipe in place, and the heater core hose connections that are easier to feel than see. I did have to move/shift the flexible PCV pipe to be able to remove the coolant pipe in the end. The other thing, when i closely examined my front coolant crossover pipe from head to head, some tech had previously used a sharp pick to take the O-ring off the pipe, where it goes into the thermostat housing - it was all gouged up underneath the o-ring. So, had to replace that one too.

    We bought ours preowned. Two owners before us both trading after keeping it for 30,000 miles. I think I know why. Ha. It had 70K on it last year when the fuses blew. No issues with the fans themselves before or since. Just crap fuses. Those circuits need to be beefed up with higher rated protection, not just cheap metal ribbon. When I took it apart it was obvious someone had already had the supercharger off. The pad that sits across the Vee was missing as well as 2 retainers that hold the fuel rail tubing. I was able to replace the heater tube without removing the intake runner. The plastic air injection tube was partially torn at the rear from the first guy so I separated it and pulled it up out of the way for access to the heater tube coupling, then cemented 5/16 fuel hose inside to seal it. I replaced the thermostat, waterpump, both tubes and all the o-rings. I love the car, fast as hell, but i don't want to do this again!!!

  • @thomasjenket748
    @thomasjenket7484 жыл бұрын

    How fast were you leaking coolant? I have a leak. Same car, replaced the thermostat a couple years ago but didn't know about replacing the O rings on the head connectors. Most of my coolant pooling is slow and looks to be coming from the front but wanted to see if I should take the thermostat off to check the pipe/o ring you show here.

  • @MidknightMechanics

    @MidknightMechanics

    4 жыл бұрын

    The leak was kind of slow honestly, I ended up having to drive home about 1 hour and the expansion tank still had coolant, and the low sensor did not trigger yet. If the car was running, it was a steady drip that ran down the front of the engine (from the pool up under the supercharger) and off off the belly pan. Don't forget to closely check the front coolant crossover pipe that goes from head to head. A lot of people have had leaks from this pipe. At the end of this job, I also had to replace mine but it was because a technician had previously gouged the plastic underneath o-ring where it enters into the thermostat.

    If only VAG had made the coolant pipes out of metal instead of plastic... Going to have to do this on my Q7, luckily I won't need to remove anything from the front of the engine because there's a TON of room in the engine bay. Want to do the timing chain tensioners as well and I'm hoping it can be done without removing the engine because of the extra room under the hood.

    John do you remember the oring coming on the new pipe (should have been pre-installed). Maybe it didn't seat correctly? Or it's the other coolant pipe, from head to head that they call the crossover pipe- that one is more common to fail than the one underneath the supercharger.

I noticed that on Motul 8100 x-cess, i get a low oil warning at 3,500 miles, and i'm wondering if that's related to the pcv. When i did the oil fill cap test, there is no vacuum pull like others have with the same clear issue, however, i do see a shit lot of vapors coming out when opening the fill oil cap while the engine operates at the regular temperature. So now i'm wondering if this is a piston ring related issue.

    I hate to say this, but i have no doubt in my mind, you have some minor blow-by/consumption. It sounds like it's a bit more than mine, but it could be because of the different oils we are using. I'm using Mobil 1- 0w40, and i'm 1 quart low at the 5K mile marker. So i add a quart, and my change comes up not long afterwards, at 6K which i stick to religiously. If i were you, change up the oil choice (even though Motul is best of the best) and see if you get any more mileage before the low quart warning. Another super premium choice would be Ravenol, Liqui Moly and Rowe

  • @BoghyFL

    @BoghyFL

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@MidknightMechanics Yeah, i was thinking about blow-by. I used Ravenol, Edge, Liqui Moly and now Motul. Ravenol to me was the worse, as far as burn smell from exhaust. Liqui Moley has the least smell out of those four. Never tried Rowe. All 5w-40 grades used here in South FL. The funny thing about this, I had the oil lab tested and they said that there are no issues found in the oil recommending up to 5,500 miles when was filled with edge (imagine 4,500 no lubrication like Audi recommended on that oil to be changed every 10,000k?) It makes sense why so many audis are fucked up at high mileage. They aid in the accelerated obsolescence in their engine wear. Normally I do it at 5,000. Now granted, the car is literally driven more often than none in Sport mode and manual. So not sure if that also has anything to do with this higher oil consumption.

    Don't stress too much. It could be a small hidden leak. That's what happened to me. Months past before I could identify the leak. Mine turned out to be the the vacuum pump was leaking oil onto the front coolant crossover pipe and deteriorated the seals/o-rings. I only saw coolant leaking once in a while. I didn't know I had an oil leak as well. My coolant level would go down from max about once a week to every other week. Then eventually it would leave wet spots on the ground at the same intervals. Everything he shows in this video are the main areas to find leaks. Additional areas to look for is leaking PCV valve and supercharger intercoolers.

    Great video. A few questions. What is the need for removing the bumper & placing the car in the service position? Did you contemplate replacing the PCV valve while you were in there? And was the install of the leaking pipe difficult, i.e. was it a bitch to wiggle out? Also, where did you get any of the needed torque values or did you just use common sense when tightening things back up? Thanks again!

  • @MidknightMechanics

    @MidknightMechanics

    3 жыл бұрын

    Appreciate that. I went into service position to more easily replace and clean the mating surface of the water pump, replace the drive belt tensioner, drive belt, and coolant crossover pipe. But, you don't have to use service position for the coolant crossover pipe, OR the heater core pipe that was under the supercharger which was my main issue. I did in fact consider replacing the (pricey) PCV, but it was already done at Audi during the last owner's service records. Nope, it wasn't hard to remove from the thermostat side, it was just horrible to unbolt from the rear side of the engine because of the brackets that hold it in place. For torque, i use a mixture of common sense after feeling how tight things are during removal, AND a Bentley repair manual.

    @@mechsuit80 Just did the PCV and the rear coolant pipe on my C6A6 3.0T. All genuine PCV was about $170USD and rear pipe $38USD. You need to go further and remove one of the lower manifolds to get enough room to remove the PCV and that means you need to remove the fuel line - you have to depressurise the fuel system BEFORE YOU START THE JOB. You will need to replace all the top injector o-rings at $30/set per injector. The rear bolt for the coolant rear pipe apparently is a pain on the S4. On the A6 it's not so bad - as hey, they did fit a V10 in that engine bay. The main issue you have is the EGR pipe runs straight behind the bolt - I was able to undo this at the LHS combi valve and move it out of the way just enough to access this bolt. Other than that, it's pretty straightforward. PCV bolts = 9nm. Lower manifold bolts = 10nm. Fuel line bolts = 9nm. Fuel line union fittings = 40nm (use a flare nut spanner in conjunction with a torque wrench, and once you've installed them, fire up the fuel system again and check for leaks BEFORE you reinstall anything else). Supercharger nuts = 20nm. Really was a very straightforward job, but I'll be making a tool to compress the supercharger belt tensioner next time as that really does suck if the car is not in service position!

    Would you get splatter on the hoses due to the leak?? I’ve been noticing white splatter marks on some hoses due to the leak landing on the belts while the car is on? Would you recommend just replacing the oil separator unit while I’m there??

    This one in particular did not create splatter but that was just good luck i guess. This one had a small stream that ran down the front of the engine case. So Joerrel, the most common coolant crossover pipe connects the heads together - the pipe in this video that I call out, is a heater hose that runs from the thermostat housing to the firewall (heater core), and it deteriorated from all the heat cycles, and crumbled apart. You could easily have this same pipe needing replacement. When it leaks, it runs out of the thermostat housing, down the front of the engine, around/on the water pump, and drips right off the oil pan.
