Audi A6 3.2 - Front sway bar links easy fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I like to travel to exotic places. The roads leading to some of these places can be really bad. As a result I beat up my suspensions pretty much. One of the suspension components that usually fails first is the sway (stabilizer) bar link. When it fails, it clunks badly.
Do you know you can replace your stabilizer bar links without removing anything and without having to jack up the car? Don't believe me? Hold my beer...

    I replaced mine follow your instructions in the video and it worked really well. Had a couple of issues removing the old one but after that it went well. A shop wanted $150 to fix it. Audi wanted over $200. I fixed it myself for about. $30 and an hour of hard work. Thank you for the video. Keep them coming please. ✌

    Oh I just remembered I showed how to replace the spark plugs in the following videos of valve cover gaskets replacement. There was oil in the spark plugs wells so I removed the spark plugs, cleaned the wells then installed replacement ones. The torque spec is 30 Nm. Dude this video is awesome! Editing is 🥇🏆🏅gold! Do you have any videos on replacing the breather hose system that connect to the top of the valve covers? I broke one of mine while replacing the gaskets. I wrapped some electrical tape around it and it's been a good temporary fix but I'd like to replace it. Thank you

    I appreciate! No I do not have any video about replacing the breather hose yet but it is coming soon. I broke the tab in the driver's side and also on the PCV valve and it's leaking slightly at both locations. However, if you can't wait, here is how to get to it: 1. Remove the intake hose. 2. Remove the upper intake and cover the lower intake ports. 3. And it's right there in the V. Clean the area, cut cable ties. 4. Remove the breather hose assembly screw, pull it off the PCV system. 5. Installation is reverse of removal.

    Damn, just placed an order on ECS with all my bushings, sway bars links as well... Glad to see your video before I replace them. Are you going to do the control arms as well? I bought a extractor tool, so I can replace bushings a lot cheaper, no need to buy the whole arm...

    I replaced the lower control arms bushings recently but I did not make a video unfortunately. However the ball joints both upper and lower are on their way so I should plan on replacing the whole control arms in the future. I will try to make a video this time 👍🏽

    Thanks for sharing. What were the symptoms before you knew yours were shot? I have a slight clunk under my front wheels and my mechanic is thinking that could be the cause.

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @ThatAfricanGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    I had a clunking noise up front and the link was damaged upon closer inspection. The lower bushing came out of its housing. I remember falling into a very deep pothole which should have caused it because the tire burst and the wheel broke when it happened.

    I have changed mine last year, those bolts are suppossed to be to long, you have to cut them, that's what an audi mechanic explained in a youtube video. Those bolt are also used on the D3 A8 if i remember correctly, thats why they are to long, with an aftermarket replacement they will be to long, like mine. Those bolts are also one time use.

    Oh okay! I replaced these 3 times over 6 years and this was the first time I tried OEM instead of genuine. I guess I'm just gonna keep buying original genuine replacement parts instead. I don't want to have to cut anything 😅

  • @anel115

    @anel115

    @@ThatAfricanGuy Those bolts are very expensive if you buy them original, my aftermarket ones where like 10-20 dollars, orginal ones where somewhere like twice the price if i remember correctly for just 4 bolts, and the top nut and bolt are different sizes if i remember correctly, that was also the case with the aftermarket ones I had my eyes one.

    @@anel115 I don't have parts available in my country. I order parts from abroad and they cost to ship, take time to get here and require me to pay customs and tax fees that are ridiculously high. It's almost impossible for me to return a part that did not fit and I would need to pay all these fees again and wait again for the right parts to come. So I don't take any chances. I don't mind paying more. I almost always buy genuine parts. They are expensive but with them I have peace of mind. 😅

    Have you removed lower control arms before? How difficult to get the lower control arms out of the steering knuckle? What tools/tricks you used to get them out of the steering knuckle? I heard they are often stuck in the steering knuckle, very difficult to remove. Thx.

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @ThatAfricanGuy

    Yes I have a few times but unfortunately I did not record the steps. It is indeed tricky. We used a hammer to tap it with a lot of force and it eventually separated. But I am thinking of purchasing a separating tool for next time.

  • @nathantedd4630

    @@ThatAfricanGuy thank you for your reply. I am thinking replacing those control arms. When you tap with a hammer, did you tap the steering knuckle casing or control arm bolt? There are one straight arm & one curved arm, the straight arm bolt goes downward into the steering knuckle, the curved control arm goes upward into the steering knuckle, for the curved control arm, is there enough space to tap on the thread bolt? Or just tap the steering knuckle casing is sufficient? How much time did it take you to change one side of the lower control arms? Thx

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @ThatAfricanGuy

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@nathantedd4630 Don't tap the bolt. Just the steering knuckle at the location where the control arm ball joint is inserted, from the inside. Applying WD-40 penetrating oil and letting it penetrate well before tapping will help separate more easily.

    @nathantedd4630

    @@ThatAfricanGuy glad to know, thx. How many minutes of tapping for each arm? Like 10min? 15min? If it takes hours, I will give up😁also, with the car on jack stand, is it difficult to reach the big bolts and nuts where the control arms are connected to the subframe?

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @ThatAfricanGuy

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@nathantedd4630 It normally takes between 2 and 5 minutes. It can take more if it is really stuck but not more than 15 minutes. You have to use a big hammer and tap very hard from the inside. Yes you can remove the bushing side bolt with the car jacked up. It's easier with long handle wrenches. Use a breaker bar if you have one or a cheater bar to loosen.
