I did the same with my Miata. Where I live, they quadrupled in value 1-2 years after I sold mine. But: by that time I saved around that amount of money not owning it (lot of road tax and gas tax here).

My grandpa had a 03 but couldn’t drive anymore so the car sat for 2 years. I put a new battery in cleaned out the dead mice and that car ran like a dream I was zooming on back roads the next day like it just left the factory

That's not true, 2.5,2.7 & 3.2 have cast pistons which have not shown any symptoms of bore scoring according to Jake Raby at LN on a PCA video. Only the forged piston cars have bore scoring. 3.4,3.6,3.8. Because of the inner lining of the piston sleeves combo with the forged piston.@@singamajigy @bendaga
These cars depreciated like crazy right after they came out. Runny eggs and all. I remember seeing them just a few years old going for under 10k. Now, 15 years later, I'm sure they've skyrocketed like everything else.

How is it factually wrong? I have old issues of Auto Express and Parkers prices guides from over 20 years ago. Why don't you buy one? I did and it cost 2k and in excellent condition.
My buddy has a 986 himself. Clean example, got it from his dad who bought it new and took good care of it. Recently got an exhaust for it. Awesome car
The throw distance on the shift is nuts😵💫
idc, this one its one of my favourite cars and If I own one i could die happy with it!
I see to many of these and gt3rs where I work, almost like seeing a Camry every day
It shouldn't be hard to repair of a Boxster (maybe) and I hope someone buy it like a boss 💪🏼
My guess behind how it ended up here is that the dude was speeding down a road and a car was about to hit him head on so he swerved into the ditch later on it probably ended up in a yard then totaled by insurance or donated (thats how most boxsters end here) and probably was a insurance write off after they vandalized it
I remember seeing a video of a guy who bought a wrecked Boxer, basically ripped off the body and built a new frame, and basically turned it into a 1960s-70s style F1 car. I should check up on their progress...
A relatively low percentage of the 987.1 Boxster S may have bore scoring issues. That's a 987.1 base model Boxster. It is does not have bore scoring issues. However a low percentage (about 10%) of both the base and S models do have IMS (intermediate shaft) issues. If the IMS goes bad, it causes catestrophic engine failure. For peace of mind, I would replace it with the updated design. Parts and labor run about $2,500.
I got an 04 with 51k miles on it and love it! Wrapped it, tinted it out, replaced radio with touch screen double din, performance breaks. Only issue I've had is somewhere in the convertible rood seal there is a entry point for rain to come in and surface under the passenger side seat. I still haven't found the point of rain entry but thankfully I now have a garage for it. My car cover helped keep a majority of rain from penetratinf the vehicle. Love my 04 boxster ✨️
In 1997 I fixed up a new boxster for a client who bought it in the condition we got it in. The story with the car was it belonged to a doctor who cheated on his wife and her revenge was to pour battery acid on the top and all over the interior. It didn’t really damage anything but it smelled very bad and was not good to breathe. So after a lot of searching we found a interior about 6 hours away so we went and got it and had the car done the next day. We changed the carpet seats and some other items that soaked up the smell.

thats a crazy story; I thought battery acid would destroy everything. Thanks for sharing!
The ticking is a notorious Boxster thing. Its from the hydraulic lifters. JR Garage has more on it. Its normal after sitting for a while

I have one, and the stock shifter sucks, I was constantly missing 3rd gear, after I upgraded to a Ben auto design short shifter I hardly miss gears
Im seeing that some comments are saying these Boxters are about $10-15k but in the UK you can get one for as low as £2k. US prices are crazy
Could have potential for somebody interested in it doesn’t look that bad honestly
If somehow, possible, can you find a stock Trueno 86? It's so rare to see one of it untouched nowadays.
On my newer Cayman the spoiler can be raised with a button and it stays up. There may not be a problem there at all. Just find if it has the same button and press it. It should go down. If not, the there is a problem.
That shifter had a LOT of movement
If parts weren't a nightmare I'd give fixing it a shot.
All the boxeters do that sound bcs of the old oil, if u let it run for a bit it goes away, if not u rev it gentle and it goes away
If you could buy it for cheap, maybe could be a fun little daily driver. While waiting for it's price to went up, sometime in the future 😂
Buy it asap, boxters are so underappreciated just because of weird shaped headlights.

Money can fix anything...
I love my 03 boxster that I bought on a salvage title auction like this, I picked one with front end damage and got away with a new bumper and headlights, along with some plastic covers. Got it back on the road only paying about 6k total, on a car worth 10k now, certainly about to start appreciating. I want another
I would probably buy that
The challenge with all Porsche? The replacement parts never depreciate.
Just hydraulic lifters on the boxster normal sound. But some good oil in it and the engine will be fine
My grandpa owns a 2000 porsche Boxster S with only 23k miles also it’s been garage kept since it was made which you can imagine it’s a pretty good condition

At startup, the engine will make a ticking noise for like 20-30 secs due to oil sitting at the bottom of the engine. In the absence of bore scoring, the noise goes away once the lifters are lubricated.
Have you ever seen a 1994 mercury capari? I’ve got one there pretty neat little cars
Just a little bit of rattling, most likely needs new chain tensioners which are like $100 a pop and pretty simple to replace. Worth cutting open the filter and checking for brown plastic bits, if those are present then the guides need to be replaced as well. These things make for amazing track cars, it's 75% 911 with a better engine layout and rear end. They're only held back by their smaller displacement engines.
I like the stick-shift.
First. i like this car
The spoilers are actuated via a button, and stay up even when the car is turned off. They don't retract on their own.

I need the front bumper and hood also id take the lights😅
Correction, if you wanted a two seater Porsche convertible in the 2000s, it was either this or a Porsche Carrera GT. The 911 cabriolet is a four seater
Very cool
I could be wrong, but I don't think these base model engines get bore score. Pretty sure it was only the larger "S" engines with the forged pistons
Sounds like that because it was not started for a long time, and it has something called hydraulic lifters, those are making that noise, let it idle for 20mins and you good to go.
He said (With a huge rock) like Rick Grimes😂
Had a shit box 03 for awhile it was a fun car
I own a 1999 Porsche Boxter, used to be a old looking black, now it is a China blue with white lettering on the side that says 986 boxter, it is about to be LS Swapped, only problem is the roof has a small cut.
Buy it!
986 base does NOT regularly get bore scoring. 996, 987, 997, 981 and 991 can get bore scoring. It can have lots of other issues but not that. This one needs chain tensioners done, engine sounds sloppy. I know because my 986 base sounds like this and is going in for tensioners and chain rails this week.
My grandma had one in the 2000’s and she sold it in 2009
What auction do you go to and use? I’m interested in buying a e36 bmw for cheap
I usually see this in my neighborhood silver body paint with yellow stripes on the side and it's not hard top I believe it's a 2001 Porsche Boxster
I'm curious to see what the auction price is.
The spoiler deploys at 75 mph so, likely it was doing around that when it spun off the road into a ditch. I wouldn't be too scared of this car. It will need some body work and do dads but it's not a basket case. Ha. Borescore. What's that? If anything I want more bore score. Gives it character.
That’s not bore score, these Boxster just sounds like that. And the engine sounds super healthy too.
Unless it goes for a ton it should be a good buy
My grandad has one and he said I could have it when I pass my driving exam
Buy it
And because it has a Porsche badge, it's gonna go for stupid money
2 dollar right now for the car
LMAO Reminds me of myself.🤣 All my life I buy projects spend thousands and lose interest. Just another habit that we have.😇 At 74 I can't help it because I can!
The banging in the engine is normal when it hasn't started or a long time, just let it run for a bit.
The sportier version of a beetle but it’s longer.
I seen one of these at my work in green and in mint condition, needless to say even tho it's an uglier Porsche it was still beautiful in that green
It's the engine the there's like a center rod thing that goes out of balance and then destroys the whole engine
Not bore score, typical of a boxer engine that hasn't started in some time. Direct injection always sounds a little funny. The spoiler is not a big deal, mine doesn't always retract due to a fussy Micro-switch.
It’ll buff out
This car looks like a rich girl’s car from some movie in 2003
How low did they wanna put 2nd and 4th holy shit
I find one in a riverside yonk yard. I pay $70 for the clouster
Might be a parts cat with the rocker panel damage….
sound is normal for a standstill boxster 986
Dont sound like bore score but like exhaust is damaged
That's gonna be hard pass gods only know what's going on underneath.
That’s not board screen that it is the sound of the timing chain tensioners because there oil said timing chain tensioner’s and it two of them like to go bad it’s not a common problem but it’s not uncommon either just due to age the time in chain tensioners wear out and when you first start it up, it takes a little for the timing chain tensioner to get fed with a while and then start creating tension on the chain so it will rattle a little bit but once it’s at operating temp, they stop because they supply enough tension again the fix for that is replace the timing chain tensioners. There are three of them. I have a 99 2.5 5 speed but does that same thing upon start up and as for the electronically controlled spoiler to me, it doesn’t look like there’s anything wrong with it. It just looks like the owner pushed the button down by the foot well and fuse box there’s a switch that you can push that deploy it’s the spoiler and you can leave it like that, you can manually deflate or the car will automatically do it at 70 I believe and then automatically pull itself back down when you slow down from 70 but as for the spoiler, I wouldn’t worry about it not that terrible of a fix you can DIY it yourself pretty easy just to be mindful that it is a job because the rear bumper does have to come out so it does take a little while to get there but it can be done. There are videos about it on KZread as well as the timing chain tensioners there are videos about that too honestly, that car is a little rough looking on the outside but it’s not too bad I would buy it and fix it because those 986 Boxster’s are going to be worth something someday. Especially if it had the six speed manual transmission
Well if you wanted a two seater Porsche then the 911 wasn’t for you because it has four seats.
All these Boxter's rattle like that on start up. It sounds horrible
2.5s don’t suffer from bore score
It kind of looks like an mr2 spyder
Boxster a.k.a Cayman nowadays
Why do you count the gear shifts?
Lifter or even exhaust leak on a boxer.
Is that at Manheim or copart lemme know thx
Try finding a ford kugA its prtty rare
The gearbox is prone to get f-ed up
Bore score? What's that?
"Yes I own a porsche, wanna see it" Boxster Owner "Sure, (OMG ITS GONNA BE SO LIT" Person *sees 30 year old, 3000 dollar car*
Those ticks are normal.. let it sit for like 15-20 minutes and they almost always go away
