ATV UTV Shock PRELOAD Explained

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There is a common misconception that softening the spring pre-load on your shocks will make your ATV/SXS/UTV ride better. It kinda does, but kinda dosent. Here is why.
Here are some defenitions to consider
RIDE HEIGHT: Ride height or ground clearance is the amount of space between the base of an automobile tire and the lowest point of the automobile; or, more properly, to the shortest distance between a flat, level surface, and the lowest part of a vehicle other than those parts designed to contact the ground
SUSPENSION SAG: Suspension sag is the amount of suspension travel used when you are sitting on your bike in a natural riding position. This means that when you get on your bike and have your weight distributed like you would when riding, the suspension should be compressed some amount.
SPRING RATE: Spring rate refers to the force exerted when a given amount compresses the spring. The rate of your spring could be 200 lb/in. If you compress the spring by 1 inch, it will exert a force of 200 lbs back
SUSPENSION PRELOAD: The preload refers to the amount of sag the shock will allow when the bike is at rest with the rider's weight bearing down on it. Determining the correct preload is important because if it's too high, it takes more energy to move the shock and compress the springs, resulting in a harder and desensitized shock system.

Good explanation of the preload. That should help folks understand the importance of the shock for the ride quality.
