ATV suspension mod - fabrication & fitment of spring spacers

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Fitting 'lift kits' to 4x4s is something I did on a regular basis back in the UK, both to our fleet vehicles & on customers vehicles too. There are a few options when it comes to improving your vehicle's off-road performance.
The best way is to replace all the springs with basically longer & sometimes stiffer ones. This usually has to be done in conjunction with replacing all the shock absorbers for longer ones, new brake flexi lines & sometimes even transmission mounting spacers to help re-align the prop shafts with the diffs to minimise U-J angles etc...this is an expensive option though & often requires a lot of work (labour cost) so not to everyone's budget...
Another option is to fit spring 'spacers', these are fitted onto the axles usually and basically increase the length of the spring. Easy to fit and pretty cost effective in comparison to the first option.
With ATVs & RoVs (Side by Sides) the job is even easier...
Far too often I hear riders complain that the springs have 'sagged' on their ATV causing it to sit much lower than when it was new. Sure, coil springs do tend to 'settle' over time and loose their strength, but fitting winches & other equipment also compresses the suspension too reducing the ground clearance.
Replacing just the springs of the coil over shock units usually isn't an option as the components are normally supplied as a single unit. So I was thinking, why not do to an ATV what we did to the 4x4s?
I took a look, stripped a coil over shock unit and did some measurements. This video covers the machining of the spacers, the technique used to strip the suspension unit, fit the new spacers & rebuild them.
I'm often asked about this problem so I'm very confident this video will be helpful to many an ATV rider & RoV driver alike...

    @@johnfazio9496 leave it at an angle as long as its not extreme. You can preload the springs to help it out. A lift and spacers is begging for trouble.

    What’s the difference between the 20$ spacers they sell on eBay that go on the top and the 150$ highlifter ones that look almost the same that go on the bottom

  • @AndyMechanic

    @AndyMechanic

    4 жыл бұрын

    Looking at the spacers on ebay they do not have the shoulder machined into them to replicate the original collar - this provides location to the spring & keeps it central to the shock body - needed to prevent the spring rubbing on the shock body which, eventually, causes a weak point in the spring & it will break. Hope this helps. Cheers Andy

    more questions, does it make the spring stiffer, or does it only lift the car? what would be the safe thickness when done? what other metal can be used? thank you.

    Hey Andy I have a 2015 Viking with a 2" lift kit that's a bolt on brackets on top of the shocks , basically it just pushs the shock down 2" in . Here in the US they sell the 2" spacers online, do you think the spacers will work better than the bolt on brackets. Will the spacers help with drive axle angle. Thanks for any help.

    does this change the axle angle or puts more stress on the cv axle?

  • @AndyMechanic

    @AndyMechanic

    Жыл бұрын

    No, the maximum angle of the suspension A-arms is not changed. However, the A-arms & drive shafts (CV joints) will run at a greater angle for more of the time, though this angle is not any larger than it was before the spacers were fitted. The modification does not put any components under increased stress. Have now fitted over 300 of these kits & shipped them Worldwide & had no issues reported. I'm very happy with the results Hope this helps Cheers Andy
