Controlling the transit and transshipment of military goods is essential to secure the legal international arms trade, to prevent diversion and to avoid the undesirable proliferation of conventional weapons. However, the efficient and effective implementation of such controls is for various reasons a highly challenging task for national governments. During this side-event, held online on 27 April 2022, several recommendations and initiatives were forwarded that states parties could undertake, both within the framework of the ATT and at the national level.
These recommendations were drawn from a recent study the Flemish Peace Institute conducted, (Check it out at: vlaamsvredesinstituut.eu/en/r... ), in which transit control systems in seven European countries were analyzed and in which possibilities and challenges for international cooperation and information exchange were assessed.
