ATOMRC Dolphin - not just another review :)

Ойын-сауық

See why everyone is crazy about this now RTF plane, the revised Dolphin from AtomRC, with INAV6 and DJI o3 on it. Link: bit.ly/3JI8pFA
Thanks AtomRC for supplying this unit here for the review!
Massive thanks to TJ for helping me with the external shots (don't miss that part starting at 10:22!!!!) check out his channel: ‪@dynashot1‬
I create HONEST reviews! If you can support this please check my PATREON: bit.ly/2ESMtIO or shop using my general FPV24 affiliate link bit.ly/3UcTLJL
Build was quick and easy!
- servos, linkages, motor, ESC, FC and GPS were already installed
- Wings and vtail needed to be glued on
- prepared DJI O3 cable (long with plug for FC was supplied, other end open cables)
- connect CRSF RX (on UART 2!)
- printed a custom O3 lensmount for the little cutout just behind the nose
- make sure o3 has enough cooling! Don't use rocksteady as this makes o3 hotter?
- created a little air scoop to help the airflow www.thingiverse.com/thing:590...
- installed a heatsink on the O3 (25x25mm)
- Tip/correction: bending the cable like I did with the CRSF antenna is not recommended!
- 3d printed latches for securing the canopy bit.ly/3AoxRKA
TECH SPECS:
Wingspan: 845mm(33.2")
Length: 710mm(28")
Weight: 520gr with dji o3
Motor: 2306 1700kv
ESC: 30A with 5V/3A BEC seems to be strong enough to supply DJI O3
Servo: 2pcs 9g servo
Propeller recommend: 6~7 inch, incl. 70x40 (cw and ccw)
Batteries: 4s 1500-2200mah LIPO or 4sLiIon 3000 or 4000mah good cells (30-40amps)
CG on the "nobs" works fine, maybe use a slight bit forward
SOFTWARE - INAV 6: "horizon hawk"
it had INAV 5.1 preinstalled, with basic settings
if INAV configurator (use the correct version!) doesn't connect, use the ImpulseRC Driver fixer. It's still a valid tool - and GOLDEN!
INAV 6.RC3 (as of 11.3.2023)
firmware: ATOMRCF405NAVI
CRSF: UART2
GPS: UART4
DJI: UART5
FC has barometer!
all SETTINGS are here: bit.ly/3Fpu8zu
______________________________________________________
ESC: ATOMRC BLS 30A (input: 2~4S Lipo)
Continuous current: 30A / Max Current: 35A
Output: Built in 5V 3A BEC
ESC doesnt need calibration if you use DSHot 600
Set motor brake with BLHeliS config! (or reverse motor direction if you want to use other prop)

Yep, the forward swept wings and the nice looking canopy... Check wikipedia for the Su47. It even had forward swept wings - but not a real beauty. If I fly often enough with a prooven platform, I can relax rather quickly - but never 100% - that's right. But with Autolaunch and RTH, cruise mode... it's less stressful than it was a few years ago... greets and have a nice weekend!

Beautiful place to fly. I am homesick. I've had two flights with my stock Dolphin. It flies very well but my side-toss autolaunch is extremely dramatic. I've tried recommended idle and launch throttle settings but the Dolphin just rolls to the left . I have had hundreds of successful side-toss autolaunches with a variety of wings but this one reminds me of the torque roll problems during launch with the AR Wing Pro which ended up in the trash. I don't want to have the Dolphin end up the same way. BTW, after a painful mishap once long ago, I swore to myself that I'll never again launch a pusher with my fingers anywhere near the prop.

I have been avoiding the Dolphin, even though it has all the other characteristics I always look for, because it's said to be hard to launch -- guys steeped in vulnerable, labour intensive balsa scratch builds like I am will never be comfortable with hand launches.

Cool video! Do you use WtfOs and msp osd package? I already have Vista and rooted Googles v2 and I'm wondering how it will work if I will buy my first O3. • @Rcschim

    @Rcschim

    Жыл бұрын

Hi, yes I use wtfos on arwingpro and others. Dolphin is o3 and there the osd works kinda good, only some symbols are missing. So here Vista is better. Switching is a bit inconvenient but you get used to it. From o3 to Vista works without re- binding, but the other way round needs new binding. So I have a little pin in my goggles protector foam. You only need to re- bind one of your Vistas then all work (until the next switch to o3). But the advantages of o3 are there! Super image, good 4k cam with no extra weight... I heard the rumor that o3 will be cheaper soon, then I will buy 1-2. Greets Mario

Lastly I went for this combo: T-Motor F90 2806.5 Long Range 1500KV T-Motor F35A ESC 2S-6S BLHeli 32Bit And this works great. Would even work with 6S packs, but I don't have the right props. Some 6 x 4 x3 didn't work, it stalled and made weird loud noise around 80% and up. Also it was slower with this than 4cell and the 7x4.2 biblade. Either that, or you mount the lens high enough. I dont mind a little bit of the nose in the view. It's also an indicator if you have stabilized or raw video ;) and you also see how much the plane bounces around. For a friend I modified a funjet Nose, where the O3 Lens is in the front. I can share the link if you're curious (it's in onshape)

@@daniel.pendzich I ended up designing the nose for funjet new, and I think I can adapt this design also for the dolphin. Will just take a few more days. For the dolphin I’d print: closing helpers for canopy and back lid. Servo protectors, and some cooling options for the o3. Best to use a fan mount on the o3. Send me a quick mail at rcschim@gmx.at so I can reply as soon as I have the nose for the dolphin. Greets, Mario

Bro, do u have any problem with P factor during auto launch? How to counteract if our aircraft roll/turn to left during launch?

  • @Rcschim

    @Rcschim

    3 ай бұрын

Nope, that's not a problem with P factor, rather with your handlaunch? or too high motor throttle (that causes Motor torque). See my settings here (Autolaunch settings) but I think it was 85%. Higher motor throttle is not always better in that case (because the wings don't have aero effect yet, because too slow, you're wings control surface cannot counter the motor torque). Could also be a problem that your plane is either too heavy, the motor too weak... the prop too small?

Can go quite slow, but eventually will stall below 30kph. With stock setup you can get up to 130kph if you have some tail wind or a little dive, 100kph horizontal. Next I will install bigger motor and 6s pack. Then it will be even more fun...

@@Rcschim Well, I don't know if it will fly better than with inav, since inav is based on the cleanflight project which has always had better flight characteristics than the ardupilot core... but for sure with AP you should have access to fancier things like python scripting and a greater range of autonomous capabilities.

  • @Rcschim

@@tubamanandy2 From my notes it came with a pretty basic setup - but INAV preinstalled - which you don't see too often. There's not a lot to tune (at least to my understanding) on planes. Last week I tried to pid tune an old frame with 12x6 props and modern FC (speedy F7V3). This took quite some time ;) still flies like crap. On the planes (Dolphin or Mars1200) I think they have more "shakes" in gusts - but you cannot get rid of this fully (the servos reaction to wind gusts is always too slow / late). ultra fast RPM changes on copters are a much better measure against windgusts! Still I love flying planes now as well! As I said - stay tuned as I will update my dolphin to INAV 6.1 and also try to get a better, smoother setup...
