In the early 80s, I worked with a guy who was a member of the "Atomic Soldiers Association". He was one of the soldiers you see getting into the slit trench, at 5:45. He had to climb out of the trench and walk toward the mushroom cloud shortly after detonation. He said that every year, the members of the the ASA would gather for a convention, and every year, several of the members would be reported deceased. The members who passed on had died mostly from cancers associated with radiation exposure. They all knew they had limited life spans, due to their service in the post war army. He figured he was just another soldier giving his life for his country.

At 45:46, the narrator says the cinder block houses survived the blast the best, as opposed to the standard wood framed homes. Sounds like the "3 Little Pigs", only the huffing and puffing is done by a bunch angry atoms, not a hungry wolf.

I'm sure you know you'd never get out, from inside a refrigerator!!?? due to the vacuum created when the doors closed. its forms a seal around the door . so it's impossible to push open the door from inside. the same for a freezer.. that why, you hear of children dying from climbing into them. that's why Industrial "walk in" fridge and freezers, have a door opening handle on the inside. let's be careful out there.

Ah, the Cold War. When I was a kid, we always had to do drills where we ducked and covered, but they told us it was to protect us from tornadoes. I'm pretty sure it served a dual purpose, but I don't know if telling us that tornadoes could kill us at any time was any better than telling us that nuclear war could kill us at any time.

In real life, even if there'd only been one detonation in the entire country it would be a colossal disaster! This guy treats it like a concert that got out of hand. Funny you should say that. Nuclear weapon capable bombers are near the Finnish border. Nuclear warhead capable missiles are on the Ukraine border. People, including embassy staff are evacuating eastern European countries under the threat of nuclear attack. Poland is inspecting bomb shelters. Iodine pills are being issued. The Poseidon intercontinental Nuclear-Powered Nuclear-Armed Autonomous Torpedo, and their mother ship have been launched. I have no idea if it can travel up the Potomac, Mississippi, or Thames. The UK has been caught with its pants down because the government sold all the shelters, and became slack in their civil defense. There's old films. I wouldn't be surprised if the United States was in similar condition. The fallout shelter signs have long been gone locally. I doubt Gen Z knows what they look like.
