ATOLL S or SMALLRIG: Which CAMERA COLLAR is Better?

Hey Y'all 👋🏿
In this video, I compare 2 popular rotating camera collars for Sony mirrorless cameras (I use the A7S3 and the A74). It's Atoll S vs SmallRig! Which one do you think is better?

    I like the atoll better because the part that mounts to the camera can be put into a peak design capture clip or be mounted directly to arca Swiss tripod

    This alone is the reason why I went for the Atoll version. Another reason is if you want to use the camera inverted position meaning below your tripod to have the camera closer to the ground with the Smallrig, the camera ends up upside down given the limited rotation the colar has.

    What a great fully informed video you've made. Thank you so much. Unfortunately I have a Canon 1D X Mark III and none of the rotating collars I've investigated can accommodate the 80mm distance between the centre of the lens and the bottom of the camera. I so wish there was something as small as this and available and it's would be so convenient for my conference photography.... no having to remove the camera from the tripod head and reseating it again on the other side of the L plate.

    thx a lot - perhaps the best review of both rotating rings with very valuable tipps about details: small rig is the evolution of the Atoll concept (as the real inventor) .. additionally in some other reviews it was mentioned that the small rig is more stable mounted on the tripod socket, it does not wobble as much as the Atoll...

  • @echoauxgen

    A great and complete review of both for those not in the know. I got the Smallrig mainly due to all the advantages BUT the Atoll required adjusting the distance to the camera with two bolts that would require some Red or Blue Loctite because no matter how careful you are but mainly temperature variations may loosen the bolts also you have to rotate to get to the lens release button. The one downfall of the Smallrig is the order point store is in China and may take a week or more arrive and also with China flexing its muscles you may feel you are funding their side of confects a terrible weight to bear if something starts up!

    Glad to see a creator giving props to Silent Corner. I have seen other companies (like Smallrig and Ulanzi) ripping of their design (as far as I know) and it's disappointing to see a company losing to knock offs. I don't doubt the QoL improvements and price makes the SmallRig version great, but I am happy to provide my money to the original creator. I won't say I won't look at alternatives if I need another but glad you gave a nod to the creators. Great video btw 👍👍

    Great vid. A couple of comments… the orientation of the plate on the SmallRig means it mounts like any L-plate would. So it’s not that foreign. The Atoll mounts like a standard lens foot. So it’s a toss up. Also one thing that wasn’t mentioned is that the alternative to this is an L-bracket but many of them get in the way of the articulating screen so these collars address that problem.

  • @kietkopelli
    @kietkopelli Жыл бұрын

    Excellent video. I also have both mounts and much prefer the SmagRig over Atoll. The singular reason why I have the Atoll is my Tamron 35-150mm because the USB port on the lens does not allow it to be mounted on ANY rotating collar except for the Atoll. In fact, Atoll specifically designed their mount to overcome this. It's great for anyone who has the Tamron but frankly compromised way too features compared to the SmallRig as you mentioned.

    I have an Atoll for my Canon RP with adapters so they can fit my Olympus E-M1ii and Canon DSLRs as well. It won't fit my Sonys so I got an Ulanzi S-63 for those. Their main competition are L-plates, which are more streamlined when it comes to storage, but are fussier to work with since you have to keep locking and unlocking the mount to switch from landscape to portrait and the L-plate also blocks all the ports on the left. The rotating collars work fine once you lock down the collar to the tripod mount. Just unlock the rotating pin so it can rotate, adjust it to the position you want and you're done. No need to lock the rotation since it pretty much stays in place. You can even leave it at an angle, which you can't do with L-plates.

    One benefit of the Atol is if you shoot with your tripod center column upside down, so you can get close to the ground, you can spin your camera 180° so it's right side up again. That would make messing with settings and finding buttons so much easier!

    My Atoll has detents at 90 and 180 degrees, if you consider landscape to be zero. The 90 is only in one direction, ccw - looking from behind the camera. You can get 180 turning cw or ccw. The 180 allows the monitor to be correctly-oriented if you reverse your center column to shoot extremely low angle or close to the ground. Also, there is a 1/4"-20 tapped hole to attach a Manfrotto or other QR plate.

    I lost the Atol's locking screw - it has/had no total unscrew security. Luckily I had what it needed to replace it (in my "always keep unnecessary parts...". Otherwise I like it a lot. There ARE jet still other brands doing similar rotating solutions (I think Novoflex and Sunwayfoto are some one of them to check out - and stay tuned about).

    So I’m browsing the Tube of You as one does and you’re video pops up, not familiar with the product so thought I’d check it out. Very interesting as sometimes use longer focal lengths but not all tele’s have a tripod foot, which means my little Fuji is having to take on all the load. I wonder if this would help? Also how exactly does this mount to the camera body and are they universal or are they camera specific? Looks like I’ll have to go off and do my own research. Lastly, props for great video production. Very informative, well lit, sound, editing, tone etc, must be in the business, very professional. Subbed 👍

I picked up the ATOLL as a backer on their Kickstarter for only $79 and found that it didn't with Nikon, even though they claimed it did...it would only rotate 240 out of the 360 degrees they said it would before stopping on the grip...I had to mod mine by putting washers between were the camera mounting plate attaches the ring, so it would no longer hit the grip!

    I'm not sure which tripod you got, but it should be. However it's very important that whichever direction you tilt you camera on the tripod for vertical orientation that one of your tripod legs is positioned underneath it because the weight of your camera is being shifted to whatever side you tilt it to and it needs that support

    How would you propose manufacturers allow the camera to rotate clockwise? It would need to clear the grip (which varies from camera to camera) without interfering with whatever lens you might be using. The only solution I could think of would be a right-angle system that offsets the camera from the tripod head and connects to the lens mount from the left side rather than the bottom.

    Nice review. Small rig looks better but I'l stick to my L bracket. The reason is that ring takes up space between the lens and the grip, which would reduce my purchase on the grip. This may not be an issue with a small lens or with strong fingers. But for those who have a large lens or weak or arthritic fingers, the reduced ability to have a sure grip is dangerous to camera and wallet.

    Question - How many lock positions does each collar have? My understanding is that the small rig rotates at 0° and 90°. Where as Atoll has rotation positions at 0°, 90° and 180°. Can you please confirm if this information is correct? For shooting low, it would be nice to invert the tripod with the camera at ground level. Rotating the collar to 180° would place the flip screen upward. At the moment I prefer for ATOLL for this reason.

    Only the Atoll can support all the new Tamron lenses with USB-C port. So if that's important to you, only one option. HOWEVER. If you do this. You need to push the collar far back towards the body of the camera making it annoying (but not impossible) to press the lens release button. Lenses we're talking about here are the Tamron 28-75 G2, Tamron 50-400, etc. no other rotating collar supports these lenses, full stop. If the above is a big issue, or you have even bigger lenses like a 600 or 800mm, Atoll makes the Atoll X which has a 93mm diameter. HOWEVER, in truth, if you're using a lens that big, you should probably be using the actual lens collar that comes with the lens because stability may be an issue due to a massive shift in center of gravity (even Atoll suggests this).

  • @StefanKamer

    @StefanKamer

    @@ArminHirmer makes sense. Other than the super big ones the Atoll has the best compatibility of any of these brackets. In my opinion, the Atoll is the best option for most cases. If you're invested in peak design system, this is amazing for compatibility there. It's lighter weight than most other options including most L-Brackets. It's customizable and can be adjusted for supporting smaller cameras, stacking ontop of l brackets and cages, etc. and of course supports more than just Sony cameras (through different models of course). I find the smallrig and other options too limiting. Adding peak design base adds more weight and reduces the practicality of a bracket of this type. Not supporting modern high quality lenses (even nearly a year after launch) through updated versions is a big L for the others. And finally, no 180° rotation for most other than Atoll. 180° is amazing to have for if you're shooting extremely low on a tripod like with wide angle landscapes (and not have to have your camera upside down). Personally, the Atoll is perfect for me, as long as I'm not doing long exposures with my Tamron 50-400 (the stabilization in the lens is more than sufficient to handle the ever so slight imbalance). If I will (at like 300-400mm), then it's the lens collar of the lens itself 100%. Far more convenient this way in my opinion

    Regarding the clockwise rotation, Silent Corner now offers both the Atoll D and Atoll X which provide more clearance between the ring and the camera body. This also fixes the issue of hard-to-access lens release buttons. m.youtube.com/watch?t=5m32s

    I haven’t tried the Atoll yet but both ulanzi and smallrig versions won’t fit my tamron 28-75 g2 because the ring is so tight you can’t get the usb c port on the lens into the emount

    Interesting....I still have the v1 of that lens and I haven't run into that issue with the SmallRig. I just checked and the Atoll collar ring is a little thinner, so it might give you enough clearance.

    @@BrayGrayy does the v1 have the same usbc port that kinda drops down? That’s what seems to be causing it not to fit. I’ve never used the v1 28-75

    @@BrayGrayy I can confirm after just receiving the Atoll both the Tamron 28-75 g2 and the 50-400 tamron work using it. Now comparing the Atoll to the others I can see why. Especially with the ulanzi. It uses a elevated ring that can’t be adjusted like the Atoll which is causing the ring around the censor to hit the lowered usbc port. If you have the Atoll and put it vertical you can adjust the 2 screws which allows the ring to move closer and clears the USBC ports by like 1/32 of a inch. I wish I could post photos to show the comparison but I might just need to make a video about it.

    There’s a new version coming out under the Falcam brand. I tried one and what is cool about it is that on the ring is a nato plate to attach a hand grip to. I think it’s on the Ulanzi site as pre-order. Unfortunately, like with many of these things, Sony only…which sucks because I shoot Canon. The cover the lens release button is a no deal for me, so my options for Canon are limited. I did see one from Fotopro that doesn’t use a full ring, but rather 1/4 of one for a universal fit. Might try that one.

    Smallrig loses in my opinion based on lens compatibility and weight. Atoll can fit just about every lens you can throw at it aside from some larger telephoto lenses. The new Tamron lenses with the usb-c ports are not compatible with any of the other vertical to horizontal mounts out there other than the Atoll.

    ULANZI Horizontal to vertical is better than Atoll and SmallRig. Ulanzi takes it to another level, where you can add a handle for video, like a video rig.

    I have an Atoll. Terrific! But, I’ve found that if you want to use a panorama slide rail, it doesn’t work because you attach from behind. The small rig, because it attaches from the side, should overcome this. Is that the case?
