The Raven Boys always had this mystical atmosphere to it. It always felt as tho magic was buzzing in the air around me. There's something about the author's writing that really made it for me.

I read Spinning Silver last year and WOW! It's so so good. I think Uprooted is the more well known and popular of Naomi Novik's books, but this one is just as good. There was this quote from it that I literally have plastered all over my life: “But I had not known that I was strong enough to do any of those things until they were over and I had done them. I had to do the work first, not knowing.”

Another book like the shadow of the wind and a starless sea, with the idea of a magical book discovery, is a discovery of witches by Deborah Harkness. It’s a fantasy trilogy about witches, vampires, and demons, and their origins.

If you liked Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver, you'll probably also like her other stand along novel, Uprooted, as well as Kate Forsyth's Bitter Greens. Atmospheric in a different way, I think of The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. Completely different again but I loved how much I could feel the history and the location, even though they are middle grade novels, I just read The Crowfield Curse and The Crowfield Demon by Pat Walsh. There's a stalled third book to come out with the same characters but the last update promising it will be published is a couple years old so I'm not going to hold my breath. However, the first two books both have satisfying wrap ups for their own story lines, so you won't be left hanging if the third book never manifests. Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin also feels atmospheric, as well as The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.

I know this is for books, but I also suggest Natsume's Book of Friends and Mushi-shi as two very atmospheric anime-manga, for those looking for more in a different vein. Natsume is a very warm story about an orphaned boy who has always been able to see spirits (who are often highly dangerous) and has been ferried from family members to family members his whole life and has finally settled with a loving couple and found a place he fits in. Each chapter/episode is usually a different story or encounter, and you can see the cast evolve over time. It has lots of action and many of the original interactions with the scarier spirits are straight out of nightmares. That said, it feels like a warm hug, although many of the stories are bittersweet, they tend to be more sweet than bitter. Mushi-shi is about Ginko, a mushishi who wanders throughout ancient japan selling his wares and helping people who are being affected by mushi, which are essentially oddly-shaped supernatural beings that can only be seen by some people. It's kind of hard to explain what it is that they are, since they aren't based off of any folklore that I know of, though the word mushi derives from the word "insect" in japanese. The job of a mushishi is to help people who are being affected by mushi and to record new treatments. They are like a doctor for supernatural occurrences. Mushi-shi isn't as warm as Natsume's Book of Friends, and each incident in each episode has vastly different consequences. Some end well, some end badly and many land in-between. It is very peaceful, when it's not being horrifying. I'd suggest watching both of these as anime before going to read them, or at the very least, listening to the music while reading (both have their full albums available on youtube), since the music is just as incredible for setting the scene as their art is. Their anime help nail the actual pacing of the stories, letting moments breathe for as long as they really should, but both mediums are incredible.

So I just read Gods of Jade and Shadow and I really felt like I was traveling thru 1920s Mexico with Cassiopeia. I also think the author did a really great job of incorporating the culture and history of the region without taking you out of the book but includes a glossary just in case. It reminded me of the Bear and the Nightingale with how that one is rooted in real history and this one takes its roots from Mayan mythology.

Spinning silver is not set in Russia, it's Poland. We've got a little bit of income in our culture (that's why there are a lot of cases when "west" people are confused), but they are also pretty different. For example, the name are not russian names of characters and places, also as Naomi Novik has Polish roots she retails fairytales of her childhood, told by her polish grandmother. Hope you will tell everyone about this in you future videos, and please don't take it personal. Love your videos 🥰

The Last Breath by Nicholas Sparks... this is such an atmospheric book. My mom bought me this and I thought I wouldn't like it because I don't like those contemporary love stories but it was so good. You just feel as if you were there in south or North Carolina I don't remember which one it was. And also is heartbreaking and also plays somewhere in Africa (I also don't remember which country) and that's really interesting.

Since you obviously like Historical Fiction, and you love Atmosphere, you should read The gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye. That whole trilogy gave me vibes from the movie gangs of New York, but the characters you just have to fall in love with! Its all about a reluctant, down his luck man who gets bullied into taking a job as a "copper star" when they were just begining the NYPD. But he ends up discovering that he has a real talent for it, and he makes powerful enemies fighting For the innocent underdogs. Ugh, 💕 I just love it so much!

I’m curious about the book the ten thousand doors of January. I think it may be a super atmospheric novel but haven’t heard much about it. Has anyone read it?

When I think of atmosphere I think more in the terms of does the setting have a character of its own? Can you describe the feel of it and can you pinpoint what makes it unique from other books? If you can't then it probably doesn't have that much of an atmosphere. Great atmospheric adult fantasy series is The Gentleman Bastards Sequence :D

yarncat books i haven’t read midwinterblood, but from her description it reminds me a bit of moonstone: a boy that never was, not completely the same but they have many similar themes

I need to choose between the bear and the nightingale and the starless sea. I have read the night circus and I loved it! But I am intrigued by the bear and the nightingale now. Can somebody who read one of them or both help me out?

I'm about 2 years late, but I can tell you I loved the bear and the nightingale. I read it near Christmas and would definitely recommend reading it in winter to add to the atmosphere. I haven't read starless sea though.
