Atlas treatment for Chiari Malformation | Portland Chiropractor Dr. Chris Cooper, DC, BCAO

A true Chiari Malformation is classified as the cerebellar tonsils dipping below the foramen magnum by 10mm or more. Initially, Samantha was diagnosed with a Chiari after an MRI and the presentation of her symptoms. The medical doctor eventually retracted his official diagnosis saying her 3.5mm dipping of the Cerebellum didn't classify as a true Chiari. BUT SHE STILL HAD ALL THE CLASSIC SYMPTOMS. smh.
Atlas Orthogonal upper cervical chiropractic has been shown to help "less than full" Chiari Malformations pull back up about 2mm post adjustment.
We did a trial of care (2 weeks) to see if Samantha responded. She is doing wonderfully!

    Either she was extremely anxious doing this and relieved after or this little machine and stylus made one heck of difference. Her face and smile say it all.

    Does this treatment help patients with Atlanto axial instability? I have reversal of the cervical curve and tonsil ectopia of 5mm, but i have all the really terrible neuro symptoms associated with chiari. I may have Atlanta axial instability but it's not clear. I'm declining fast but I haven't tolerated cervical traction particularly well.

    I was diagnosed with Chiari type 1 and syringomyelia in 02. I had decompression brain surgery in 2004. After my first appt w/the neuro surgeon he told me three things that I could never do again...ride roller coasters, do yoga in inverted positions and get an adjustment at a chiropractor. I see a chiro for muscles, but have always headed my surgeons warning. Why is it all right for this girl to be adjusted? I’d be so curious to understand what an “atlas adjustment” is and why it is safe for us with Chiari. My chiro said adjustments are off the table for me as well. Confused.

    That’s a great question and I understand the confusion. I have 2 answers for you. 1) The girl in this video has not had a surgery. She also didn’t have a syringomeylia. That makes her a better candidate for this adjustment. 2) BUT she is NEVER a candidate for a manual adjustment (twist, crack) or even activator (little clicky). The type of force this machine delivers is unique and studied and even backed by the FDA (if that means anything). It is very safe for most. In your case with a surgery and spinal cord changes, I would probably review all the post-op imaging you have and potentially consult with your surgeon if necessary.

    This technique doesn’t involve any twist or pop. I have a patient who had a posterior arch “laminectomy” of C1 that responds well to this treatment. I would NEVER adjust her manually though. Very contraindicated. Before even accepting you as a patient, I would have to review your post op MRI and/or CT scan. Your doctor is right, some people are not candidates for chiropractic. But they might not be familiar with this specific treatment.

I stand corrected (key here being nothing above the shoulders) and humbled. I would strongly advise anyone with a similar situation to have x rays done, and have a deep discussion with the chiropractor regarding your comfort levels, hesitations, and the details of your condition.

    What do you think of Chiropractic adjustments for Chiari Malformation patients with a 10mm± tonsil herniation?

  • @PortlandChiropractor

    @PortlandChiropractor

    4 жыл бұрын

    Well, the research shows only a 3mm lifting of the tonsils post adjustment. Theoretically, the slight lift can decrease pressure on the nervous tissue but there is a chance the benefit will be minimal. That being said, the procedure is extremely non-invasive, non-addictive, and relatively cost-effective. So I'd at least give it a try.

  • @PortlandChiropractor

    @PortlandChiropractor

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s a good question. It is an X-ray that helps diagnose an atlas misalignment. But unless you take 2 very specific X-rays, it won’t be super helpful. If the radiologist knows what they are looking for, they can see a dramatic atlas misalignment in the lateral cervical Xray or the AP open mouth Xray. The 2 special X-rays are called vertex and nasium. An MRI isn’t trustworthy to show misalignment because usually you are lying down.

    @@Animal14722 I have mixed feelings. I think I needed it for sure but it didn't work as well as I had hoped. I think I lived with it too long and some of the damage was irreversible. Here's a couple examples: I stopped slurring my speech, stuttering, my memory slightly improved (I can at least have a conversation now. Before I would forget what I was talking about halfway through a sentence), balance slightly improved, I don't choke on my saliva as often as I used to. I would literally choke on it a few dozen times a day, now a couple times a week. Some of my numbness improved. Headaches did not improve my neck pain/stiffness did not improve, I still have issues with vomiting, my voice is still very hoarse, I still get blurred vision and extremely sensitivity to light, so on. I do need to go to a doctor because sometimes now my neck is getting stuck when I try to straighten it. It feels like it's catching on something. I just have other health issues that it's been hard to get it checked out. So please don't get me wrong, I still would have it done if I was able to do it over again. It just wasn't as successful as it probably could have been if done earlier in life. I know a girl who had it done when she was 17 years old and is perfectly healthy. I was 33.
