Atlantis | The Lost City

In Classical period Greece, the Athenian philosopher Plato spoke of a far off island in the west, with a culture unlike any other in the world: Atlantis. According to Plato, Atlantis was an idyllic utopia, complete with advancements in society and innovation, unrivalled in terms of technology and military might. Yet despite their power, the island of Atlantis was destroyed and fell into the sea, without a trace of their civilization to be found. A captivating tale for sure but the question that has been asked since Ancient Greece...was Atlantis a real place?

The minute I started watching this amazing video I just thought of how even Classic Yu-Gi-Oh touched upon Atlantis in it anime story. One of the little texts that appeared in the video even said something about Timaeus and Critias who became characters within the Yu-Gi-Oh storyline as great and legendary knights of Atlantis

Much of what people "know" about Atlantis was first written down by Ignatius L. Donnelly, a Mid 19th century Politician and Author from Minnesota who wrote Atlantis: The Antediluvian World as well as a couple of other books.

I mean. There is famous story of Platon and I'm fairly sure he was studied extensively. But! Original story is not a myth, but a philosophic dispute using fictional state as example. It is why it was dismissed by archaeologist as fiction. Despite his claim of learning the story from Egyptian priests. Quite funnily enough, nowadays they commonly point toward city of Akrotiri, what was center of trade during Bronze Age. Related to Crete. Many aspects from Platon story correlate with actual details. City was destroyed around 1000 years BC. When supervolcano on which isle was located. Basically wipe it from the map, also destroying Crete and forcing migration of "sea people". In fact tsunami sweep through Egipt and event was most likely one of factors triggering Bronze Age Collapse. In fact it is the same event as "pillar of fire" fallowed by Jews during exodus. And could cause Egyptian plagues (huge quantities of ash) and later Tsunami destroyed forces of Ramses. As side note, tsunami actually pull water before hitting.

I would like to add the archeological evidence for Atlantis being built on the Richat structure in Mauritania, the first king of Mauritania was named Atlas (the same name of the king of Atlantis), the Sahara being green in that area before the rapid rise in sea levels when the younger dryas/ice age extinction happened, the evidence of massive Tsunamis happening in between it and the Atlantic, the Richat’s directions matching the legends where Atlantis was said to be, and the man who owned the most gold in history Mansa Musa sourcing his gold from Mauritania (Atlantis was said to be rich in gold)

  • @lordtraust

Add too that the rocks in the area are black and red which the locals also use to build their homes. The children of the last king were all meant to be twins as well which that area has the highest percentage of twins. But everyone just wants to think that islands can ONLY be in the ocean forgetting that we actually have islands in islands in the middle of Europe.

If it ever (really) existed, name-wise it should have been somewhere in the Atlantic ocean, which was first mentioned(for what we know, first documented) in the sixth century BC by a Greek poet, "Atlantikôi pelágei" or the “Sea of Atlas", after Atlas, the Titan...

At the time Plato was born this happened to Atalanti island. "In the first year of the Peloponnesian War this previously uninhabited island was fortified by the Athenians to prevent Locrian pirates attacking Euboea. In the sixth year of the war a part of the Athenian works was destroyed by the sea, with half the ships on the beach destroyed. Thucydides reports that following an earthquake, the sea receded from the shore before returning in a huge wave." This happened to the city of Helike about 50 years before. "The city and a space of 12 stadia below it sank into the earth and were covered over by the sea. All the inhabitants perished without a trace, and the city was obscured from view except for a few building fragments projecting from the sea." Helike, like Atlantis, worshipped Poseidon.

What i find interesting about Atlantis, be it now really just a myth or some lost bronze age civilization, is how people interpret it with time so different... I could bet that Plato had a completly other picture of a technological advanced civillisation then us nowdays have.

It should be noted that "Beyond pillars of Hercules" is ancient Greek equivalent of "Once upon a time, in a faraway land". It clearly should not be taken literally. Same as dates he used as sources so old have problem with tracking the time, especially as many used moon calendars. What has ~50 cycles in a year.

The only possibility I see where Atlantis was a real place is if there were a sudden geographic pole shift (which isn't supported by current science) but is theorised. If the Mediterranean was historically further north and Atlantis was Antarctica. This is highly, highly unlikely and therefore a very remote possibility. Genetics in domesticated plants and animals also oppose any possibility of there being an advanced population anytime before 8,000 or so years ago. For Atlantis to be real and the characteristics described by Plato to be factual, there would have to be unknown domesticated crops and animals we don't know of. Seismic activity we've never witnessed or have any evidence of and total incompetence when it comes to observing Antarctic ice cores. Our understanding of geology, biology and anthropology would have to be entirely wrong. Either the capabilities and characteristics of this population are highly exaggerated and it did exist, there is a advanced burried city under the Antarctic ice, or it's just a good cautionary story passed down through the ages. I tend to believe the later.

I believe that Atlantis "sunk" because of the Younger Dryas Impact and the orichalcum was just bronze. The Younger Dryas Impact hypothesis is where a meteor hit Earth around 12,000 BC, causing the end of the ice age and flooding the coasts with all that rapid melted ice. Also would be the cause of Noah's flood. The bronze theory is my own hypothesis from how people saw Ulfberht sword as magical since it could bend and spring back. If everyone used copper, than bronze would be also seen as magical. I also would think that the metallurgy would have been a very closely guarded secret.

It’s a wonderful civilization but I highly theorized that the Atlanteans are perhaps a subspecies of an ancient race called Isu who is said to possess the powers of quintessence and the arcane to ward of evil threats. And since the Atlanteans are a subspecies of the Isu, they only wielded the power of quintessence. This may be the reason why their technology is so advanced but what do you think?
