    I understand how nerve-wracking it can be to take an exam like the TEAS, especially if you didn't have much time to study. Remember to take deep breaths and stay calm during the exam. As for the language arts section, try your best to check for spelling errors, but don't let it slow you down too much. You can always come back to a question later if you're unsure. Good luck on your exam, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or concerns.

    I am confused on changing the y to I. The example beauty goes to beautiful, because the suffix starts with a vowel? F is not a vowel? The second example makes better sense. The enjoyment example. Ment the suffix does start with a consonant. Can you please explain that ?

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    4 ай бұрын

    Absolutely, I can see where the confusion comes from with the "y to i" rule when changing words like "beauty" to "beautiful." Let's break it down: The general rule is that when a word ends in 'y' preceded by a consonant, and you add a suffix, you change the 'y' to 'i' before adding the suffix. However, there's an exception to this rule: if the suffix being added begins with a vowel (like -ing, -ish, -able), you usually keep the 'y'. The confusion in your example comes from "beautiful." Here's the thing: while "beautiful" does follow the rule (changing 'y' to 'i'), the exception doesn't apply because the suffix isn't just "-ful" but rather "-tiful." The "beaut-" part is considered the root, and "-tiful" is the suffix here, not just "-ful." So, "beauty" becomes "beautiful," not "beautyful," following the standard rule without invoking the exception. In the case of "enjoyment," the suffix "-ment" starts with a consonant. Since "enjoy" ends in 'y' preceded by a vowel, the 'y' doesn't change to 'i', and you simply add "-ment" to make "enjoyment." I hope this clears things up! The English language has many rules and exceptions, which can sometimes make spelling and grammar quite tricky. Keep asking these great questions, and it'll get easier over time! 📚✨

    I thought the indirect and direct quotation would have a different definition considering to your definition in this video. According to what I found, an indirect quotation would not have a quotation mark and we have to change the tense of the sentence that was inside the quotation. I hope that you could clarify my confusion. Thank you for your time.

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for watching my video and bringing up your concern about indirect and direct quotations. In my video, I explained that a direct quotation is when we use the exact words spoken or written by someone, and we use quotation marks to indicate this. An indirect quotation is when we convey the speaker's words or ideas in our own words, without using quotation marks. However, you are correct that when we report an indirect quotation, we often change the tense of the original sentence to match the context of our own sentence. I apologize for any confusion my video may have caused, and I hope this clarification helps. Thank you for your support and good luck with your TEAS exam!

  • @NurseCheung

    Great question, Irenia Marchin. 😊💜 We change the -y to -i- when adding suffix endings if a word ends in a consonant + Y. *But we don't change it when we add "i" endings like -ing, -ish which already begin with an "i" beauty + ful → beautiful. Also beautify, beautician

    @Nurse Cheung 19:43 when discussing complements, isn’t “black” an adjective. A bit confused now with “complement” and “adjective”?

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    Жыл бұрын

    In the context of the video, when discussing complements, "black" is used as a noun rather than an adjective. It refers to the complement of the verb "is" in the sentence "The cat is black." A complement, in this case, is a word or phrase that completes the meaning of the subject and the verb. In contrast, an adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun. So, in the example given, "black" functions as a noun complement, indicating the characteristic or quality of the subject "cat." I hope this clarifies the distinction between complements and adjectives for you. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

    ANOTHER INTERESTING RULE. If the word is plural, meaning multiple cats, the apostraphe is insertered after the (s') "The cats' toys are under the bed." A CAT (singular) would be Cat's for posessive.

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    8 ай бұрын

    Yes, you're absolutely right! When indicating possession in English, the placement of the apostrophe depends on whether the noun is singular or plural. Singular nouns: For most singular nouns, you add an apostrophe followed by an "s" to show possession. Example: The cat's toy (refers to a toy belonging to one cat) Plural nouns that end in "s": For plural nouns that end in "s," you typically add only an apostrophe after the "s." Example: The cats' toys (refers to toys belonging to multiple cats) Plural nouns that do not end in "s": For plural nouns that don't end in "s" (like "children" or "women"), you add an apostrophe followed by an "s" to show possession. Example: The children's toys (toys belonging to multiple children) It's essential to be aware of these rules for clear and accurate communication.

    I'm confused on the spelling rule "y to i "example. Specifically, the beauty -beautiful. the rule states that we substitute the "y" for the "i" if the suffix begins with a vowel. Beauty (word), -ful (suffix). the suffix does not begin with a vowel.

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    6 ай бұрын

    Ah, the "y to i" spelling rule can indeed be a bit confusing, and you've brought up a great example with "beauty" turning into "beautiful." Let's break it down: The general rule is that when adding a suffix to a word that ends in "y," if the "y" is preceded by a consonant, you change the "y" to an "i" before adding the suffix. However, this rule usually applies when the suffix starts with a consonant. Examples include "happy" to "happiness" or "merry" to "merriment." In the case of "beauty" becoming "beautiful," an exception to the rule comes into play. When the suffix starts with a vowel, like "-ful" (which starts with "f"), we usually retain the "y." This exception also applies to other similar cases, such as "pity" to "pitiful." English has a lot of these quirky exceptions, which is part of what makes it a bit challenging but also interesting. Always remember, English is a language filled with exceptions to its own rules, and "beauty" to "beautiful" is a perfect example of that. Keep questioning and exploring these intricacies - it's a great way to deepen your understanding of the language! 📚🔤✨

  • @adasiebens847
    @adasiebens8478 ай бұрын

    Nurse Cheung I think on the “Y” & “I” you may got it wrong? I’m confused. If suffix starts with a consonant it remains the same, and if the suffix starts with a vowel it changes to I, Right? So why is it backwards on your explanation 😢so confused.

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    8 ай бұрын

    I understand the rule you're referring to can indeed be confusing, especially since English has its fair share of exceptions. Generally, when you're adding a suffix to a word that ends with a "y," the "y" to "i" change rule applies as follows: If the word ends in a "y" preceded by a consonant, change the "y" to an "i" before adding any suffix, except when that suffix starts with an "i." Example: "happy" + "ness" → "happiness" (The "y" changes to an "i") Exception: "cry" + "ing" → "crying" (The "y" does not change because "ing" starts with an "i") If the word ends in a "y" preceded by a vowel, you typically keep the "y" when adding any suffix. Example: "play" + "ed" → "played" There are exceptions to this rule, which can cause confusion. For instance, when adding the suffixes "-ing" or "-ed," the "y" does not change to "i" because doing so would create a double "i," which is not standard in English spelling conventions. Also, the word "day" becomes "daily," not "dailly," to avoid the double "l." The English language has many such irregularities, often stemming from the diverse sources of English vocabulary, including Old English, French, Latin, and Greek, each of which has contributed its own spelling and grammatical conventions.

    how come predicate and modifiers sounds the same? is it almost the same?

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    6 ай бұрын

    Great question! Predicates and modifiers do sound similar in a way, and they can be related, but they serve different roles in a sentence. Predicate: This is a part of the sentence that tells something about the subject. It includes the verb and anything that comes after it. For example, in "The cat is sleeping on the mat," the predicate is "is sleeping on the mat." It's telling us what the cat (the subject) is doing. Modifiers: These are words, phrases, or clauses that provide additional information about other elements in a sentence. They can describe, clarify, or give more detail about a concept. Modifiers can be part of the predicate, but they can also modify subjects or other parts of a sentence. Using the same example, "on the mat" is a modifier that tells us more about where the cat is sleeping. So, while a predicate is essential to forming a complete sentence and includes the main verb and complement, a modifier adds extra information and detail. Modifiers can be adjectives, adverbs, phrases, or clauses that enhance the meaning of the sentence. They aren't the same as predicates, but they often work together to add richness and clarity to our sentences. 📚🔍🌟

    Great question. When it's stated that out of the total 33 questions on the TEAS English Section, 12 questions will come from the Conventions of English section and are scored, it means that within the broader English and Language Usage portion of the TEAS exam, there are 33 questions in total, but specifically, 12 of these questions focus on the Conventions of English. These 12 questions will be directly related to grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and the like, and they will contribute to the test taker's score in this section.

    I got a little confused when you start talking about changing Y to an I, that whole part you say that Ful begins with a vowel it doesn't and you say that's why you change the y to an I in beauty but I feel as if Cry and ed would make more sense, change cry to cried, also the second part of that slide that talks about suffix beginning with a consonant you wrote it on the slide one way and then you spoke it differently you say "MENT starts with a vowel so no need to change the Y to an I, Which conflicts with the first statement and makes no sense for that statement you wrote about suffix beginning with consonants.

  • @NurseCheung

    @NurseCheung

    Thank you for your feedback and observations. Spelling rules can sometimes be complex and have exceptions. While the general rule is to change "y" to "i" when adding suffixes to words ending in consonant + "y," there are indeed exceptions to this rule. Words like "cry" and "dry" would not follow this specific spelling pattern. It's important to remember that there will always be exceptions and irregularities in spelling rules. The goal is to understand the general patterns and apply them whenever possible. If you have any further questions or need clarification on specific spelling rules, please let me know. Good luck with your TEAS preparation!
