Athens vs Sparta: Deep Thinkers vs Military Might?

Athens vs Sparta! Learn all about the similarities and differences of the Greek City-States, Athens and Sparta! This short comparison with Kelly Macquire discusses the important differences between Athens and Sparta during the height of their power.
The government for Athens and Sparta were very different, with Athens being a democracy and Sparta being a dual monarchy. They both had an assembly in their government systems, however had different uses and restrictions.
Both #Sparta and #Athens had very strong military, but through rigorous training throughout the entire childhood of a Spartan boy, their army became feared throughout Greece. Athens dominated the sea with their navy, but put emphasis on the education of boys in a wide range of topics such as reading, writing, music and rhetoric.
One of the biggest differences between Sparta and the rest of Greece was the freedom they provided their girls and women. Not only were girls in Sparta educated, but they were permitted to exercise, compete in athletic events and own land. This was very different to Athens, who only taught their girls domestic skills such as weaving.

When Epicurus opened his "garden" (school, basically) in Athens, he admitted women. I would rather live as an Epicurean in Athens any day.

She excluded the self destructing mindset of Sparta which had some relevant diciplines was acted full af hate and aggression against all neighbours with savage brutality derived from their divine indoctrination that they were the chosen people and therefore it justifies to enslave others...

Honestly, as a girl, I'd want to live in a little of both. I'd do the Spartan military training, but maybe disguise myself as a boy to attend Athenian school, so that I could learn all the philosophy and literature. Then I'd go back to Sparta and live my life.

That's pretty much interesting as I would be interested in both as well... Yeah! Use military skills to stay invisible yet visible and use my persuasive skills, learned at Athenian school, to talk my way through awkward encounters.

I would live in neither, Athens was nationalistic and arrogant in a poisonous manner, Sparta had more equality but was much more brutal. I was born with scarred lungs and a heart murmur, I would have been thrown out as a baby though I'm fit and athletic now Sparta would not have given me the chance to develop.

  • @spartanparty3894

@@StarRider253 It is, because unfortunately Athens had the same issue. When Athens was disgusted by Sparta's slaves, it was because they were Greek, not because they were slaves. Furthermore, Athens was much more imperialistic, and completely annihilated cities enslaving the women and children. Both cultures are immoral and have evil elements, hence my answer.

@@spartanparty3894 That's definitely correct but I just took issue with Sparta being described as more equal. For women, perhaps, but in general no. They were both slavery societies like you described. I'm not super familiar with Athenian slavery but didn't they have greek slaves as well? I know the Helots in Sparta were greek

Ugh how she says Ekklesia is somewhat annoying. Lol. Being Greek n knowing how it's really pronounced. But I don't fault her because learning Greek is most definitely one of the hardest languages to learn. Shit I can't really speak it myself but I understand it more then I can speak it. It pronounced Eh-Cla-Sia.

It makes sense that in a world controlled by war, the people that do the fighting - and dying- to protect their land, get the right to make the rules.

Everyone does the dying in a world controlled by war. We all die, and the starved out ones that didn't steal as well probably would have contributed more to society then the more kleptoparasitic by nature. the kleptoparasitic would thrive in certain niches, but that's not a reason for them to make rules.
