City Population: 115,452
City Area: 118.2 sq mi

CSA Population (Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA-AL): 6,054,858
From Wikipedia:
Athens, officially Athens-Clarke County, is a consolidated city-county and college town in the U.S. state of Georgia. Athens lies about 70 miles (110 kilometers) northeast of downtown Atlanta. The University of Georgia, the state's flagship public university and an R1 research institution, is in Athens and contributed to its initial growth. In 1991, after a vote the preceding year, the original City of Athens abandoned its charter to form a unified government with Clarke County, referred to jointly as Athens-Clarke County. As of 2019, the U.S. Census Bureau's estimated population of the consolidated city-county (all of Clarke County except Winterville and a portion of Bogart) was 126,913; the entire county including Winterville and Bogart had a population of 127,064. Athens is the sixth-largest city in Georgia, and the principal city of the Athens metropolitan area, which had a 2017 estimated population of 209,271, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Metropolitan Athens is a component of the larger Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs Combined Statistical Area, a trading area.
The city is dominated by a pervasive college town culture and music scene centered in downtown Athens, next to the University of Georgia's North Campus. Major music acts associated with Athens include numerous alternative rock bands such as R.E.M., the B-52's, Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers and Neutral Milk Hotel. The city is also known as a recording site for such groups as the Atlanta-based Indigo Girls. The 2020 book, Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture, describes Athens as the model of the indie culture of the 1980s.
The University of Georgia (UGA), the state's flagship public research university, is the oldest and 2nd largest institution of higher learning in Georgia. Founded in 1785, it was the first state-chartered university in the United States.
Points of interest:
- Formal garden at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia
One of the remaining two double-barreled cannons produced during the American Civil War is here.
- The "Tree That Owns Itself", which is now an offspring of the original tree
- The Georgia Museum of Art, the official state museum of art, at the University of Georgia
- The State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia
- The University of Georgia Campus & Arboretum
- St. Mary's Steeple, home of the First R.E.M. show and site for newly founded renovation.
- The Globe bar was voted by Esquire magazine as the third top bar in America in 2007.
Founded in 1955, Allen's is Athens' oldest bar and grill despite closing in 2004, re-opening in 2007, and closing again in November 2011.
- Sandy Creek Park.

I lived in Athens from 1999-2002. I was a musician and played all over those streets. It was cool seeing where the tent for the Human Rights Festival was, seeing the Georgia Theatre, and seeing the streets I used to walk with my horn on the way to and from gigs. Athens is a unique place that holds a special place in my heart. Loved the video! RIP Carl S., I will never forget you!

I’m from Los Angeles CA but lived in Athens for a few months and I can honestly say it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. Night life in downtown is like being in downtown LA, food was always good, and the people there were always nice even the gang bangers from the other side of town were nice people lol I’ll definitely be back some day

I grew up in Athens in the 1950s until age 10 when my family moved to New York State. My father was a professor at the University of Georgia. We had an old farmhouse at 710 Oglethorpe Avenue, which is now a laundromat or a convenience store. I moved back to Athens for a year in 1985, but did not like the humidity during the summer months. So, I packed up and moved to Mendocino County, California, which is now burning down. Every place has its own problems. Athens is a great town.

Thanks so much Mike. I should have moved to Athens in 2017. Everyone that I have met that lives there or has been there loves it. I made a mistake.. I moved to another larger city in another state and I hate it. Your video may have changed my life. I think i was led to your videos for a reason….. to show me that I should move there. After all, shouldn’t this girl of Greek Heritage live in Athens ? 😊 I intend to watch many more of your videos to just see what cities I will never visit look like and to reminisce about the cities I lived in….. DC, northern Va., Maryland and Florida…. What fun…. I cannot wait to watch your videos. They are the perfect videos to watch to find where you want to live too. More people should be aware of them. Next time I will take a Dramamine first. I got car sick as you were driving through and around the turns in the Rome, Ga video. 😅 Rome is a lovely town too ….. stay safe on the road.

It kind of reminds me of the town where I currently reside except there is more money here due to it being the home of the corporate offices of some of the biggest companies in the country and it's the birthplace of Walmart. I'm a drifter that lives and works in different cities and towns. I like to keep it interesting. I heard somebody talking about Athens so I thought that I would give it a look.

Rent went up in 300 on what you already paid. So if you pay 1200 it now 1500 for some people if you know what I mean. Jobs not paying to keep up. If you rent they are making you move because they are selling everything. Athens not so good now. A lot of homeless people. Tell the truth
