Athens Apartment Tour and Answering Questions About Utility Bills in Greece | Living in Greece

Here is the tour of my new Athens Apartment. It is still very empty but slowly I am getting there. I also answer questions about rent, bills and heating in this video. Hopefully, this helps you see what an apartment looks like in Athens, Greece.

Well done Tiffany, it's decent price and a vault door, most important. The mark on bathroom floor would really bother me and the lack of electrical sockets. Hope you get solution with that. Some tall green plants might be nice. Thanks for sharing your journey. Good find in a world of crazy ridiculous rents.

Thanks. The mark will eventually be covered by the washing machine. I didn’t have an electric outlet in the bathroom in Qatar either so no big deal. I will get a vanity table for the bedroom and get ready there.

I enjoyed your video and you highlighted the good and bad so well. Your apartment is so typical of these "well maintained" or "semi renovated" apartments. I had to laugh about the power outlets, this drove me crazy and I ended up installing more when I renovated in Pangrati but the kitchen is still lacking. I'm still intrigued by the water tanks .. there must be better ways to manage hot water in those! I shifted to gas hot water but in rented apartments this isn't an option. I hope your landlord is a good guy and you can do the little things you want to make it more your own! Kookaki is a super spot.

I'm not sure about modern builds, but my parents' apartment in Nafpaktos from the 1980s was built with no electrical plugs anywhere near water. The washroom had no electrical outlets. I was told to turn off the water heater when taking a shower so I wouldn't electrocute myself even though there was a circuit breaker.

I love IKEA. It’s the best place to shop for apartment living. I remember going with a friend of mine. I don’t remember where it was but we took a bus to get there. It was enormous and the cafeteria was top class. I ended up having a salmon dinner. It was delicious 😋 I still remember it. My bed frame came from IKEA and I love it, but I bought the mattress from Bed & Bath, a King Koil. It was very expensive but worth every penny. I was tired of sleeping on a couch. I turn off appliances when I leave the house. You’re right, it’s a Greek thing and I adapted to it too.

Tips: If you use an electronic account it is cheaper, instead of the classic one with the envelope that comes to your house. And something else, at ΔΕΗ (if you are a ΔΕΗ customer I do not know), if you are standard in your payments and it is always on time, in the next bill there is always a discount. Also to say that in the bill more charge is not so much from the same consumption of electricity, but in taxes, e.g. in the municipality, on ERT (Hellenic Radio Television) etc.

Your apartment is great and looks much brighter and safer than your previous one which was - as you said - luxurious but also underground. Your oven doesn't have a clock or anything so I don't see how it could consume electricity if you don't use it. I don't think you should worry about leaving it on. Now about the hot water; since your building has gas you could probably get a gas water heater installed. I don't know how expensive they are but my house has one and it offers hot water instantly no matter how cold it is and I think it's similar to the american water heating systems? I don't know if you're willing to invest in an apartment you don't own but I'm sure you could get to some sort of agreement with your landlord like he pays you back some of the money you gave for it when you move out. Anyways enjoy your new home! :)

Good Evening. your apartment is very nice and bright. because we also had an electric water heater, we recently installed a solar water heater, we were with the timer for when we will turn it off. It matters how much electricity it will consume, how many liters it is. So the bigger it is, the longer it will take to heat the water. Also, whether the resistor is new or not. looks nice. no wasted space. My cousin does the same thing with her hot water heater. Turn it on, wait a bit, then shower. We always asked her if it was ready, since we showered everyday. Many Greeks don't. The design of the "shower" is strange to Americans because we're spoiled with the spray head high on the wall. That's just Europe. We saw them low like that in hotels in Germany and in Greece. I still can't fathom why there is sometimes a glass wall in the shower. No door, which allows the water to go all over the floor.

Yeah, that has always been a head scratcher for me. A simple shower curtain would do the trick. Why have the whole bathroom floor wet? I have stayed in a few places with a more "American" shower set up. So some Greeks, I guess, are getting it. Same for the lack of screens in windows. Who wants bugs, birds, etc coming into the house? Where I travel frequently (Kalymnos), mosquitos are a real problem. So leaving open windows will get you lots of bug bites unless there are screens. Yet nearly everyplace I've stayed there has no screens...

I also think about what if but I have to live in the present. Very few things in life happen so fast that you can't change your mind. I can always move home. Nothing is permanent if you don't want it to be.

It is just barely. The cabinet really makes it hard to have anything tall but I don't really need anything bigger since its just me. I am very happy to have the vent hood since in my old place I did not.

That's a disturbing trend. Since Greece still has a lot of financial issues, and jobs pay so little, just who is paying the higher rents? Also, just how much variance can you expect with the (variable) monthly contribution?

  • @agirlandherpassport

I don’t know. Nobody I know is paying that. But most people own who are from here it seems. It depends on if your building turns on the heat or if you have your own heat

@@agirlandherpassport That alone (not necessarily turning on heat) is a big issue and illustrates just how bad things still are in Greece for the average person. Being so dependent on fuel from places like Russia does not help. Greece needs to do more to. Bring in outside investment - especially from the Greek diaspora. Too many from that group have said that they would start businesses there but won't due to things like high taxes, outrageous regulation, government moving at a glacial pace, and government not seriously willing to make many Greeks in the diaspora citizens. The Greeks who can clearly show proof get citizenship, but there are many whose relatives came from places formerly controlled by the Turks and others and do not have the required supporting paperwork (lost or destroyed records, records never having been created, etc). That's a large pool of folks who can contribute to Greek society but will not because of the aforementioned issues.
