Great review! Nice detail on these Athearns! I'm so glad you did the silent run, not very many reviewers do that. It does seem a bit noisier that my Atlas Master locos and ScaleTrains. I have an Athearn Genesis GP9 that was really loud when I got it, but after a few hours of running it is much better. Not as quiet as some of my Atlas Masters or ScaleTrains. I agree with you that Atlas needs to up their game in the detail department. regards, NS.

In Real life only 4 major roads bought these 1500HP Units. EMD though it would be a Big seller for many railroads to trade in their tired 1st Gen GP7/9/18 units and surviving F-Units and even SW/NW Switchers for new GP15-1 using as many parts as possible to help with the coast. But as always the economy and timing didn't make it the big sales winner EMD was hoping for, just 310 sold. With all the old Geeps and SW's out there I can see how EMD thought they could sell hundreds of these maybe 1000+ ? 160, MP to UP 100, CR To CSX/ NS all sold now 25, CNW to UP 25, Frisco to BN all retired or traded Union Pacific inherited 185 units from MP & CNW and a good percentage are still in use with UP.

Thanks for the compliment. So I did a little further investigation into my locomotive settings. So Athearn is supposed to have the decoders programmed from the factory with the correct horn, Bell, and prime mover. It appears they got it wrong for my locomotive. What you hear in the video is an EMD 645 16 cylinder non-turbo, when in fact from what I can tell it's supposed to be the EMD 645 12 cylinder non-turbo. In all likelihood yours is correct and mine was wrong. Thank you for pointing that out. I will do further investigation though to see if GATX might have changed something when they purchased these locomotives.

Any brand of 21 pin decoder. However you have to make sure it has enough function outputs for all the lighting. And you will most likely have to change CV's and program the decoder to allow all the lighting to function properly. Its not exactly plug and play. It requires some knowledge of decoder programming and CV changes.
