    Yeh I think Atari was a bit late to the game when they brought out the STE. It came out around two years after the Amiga 500. If it was released maybe a year sooner, I believe things would have played out a little different.

    @@maxunbb That's the issue about the STE. It came too late and improvements from STF were too low for coding STE specific games. Game makers had to maximize profits by writing games compatible with the whole STX range...

    @@pierreschmidt271 many ST boards could be easly modified to STe specification. Especially later ones, just empty places for ICs, firmware update, finally sticker update.

    STe and Falcon were incredible machines, kind of what I hoped the 500 and 1200 to be, being an Amiga user myself. They should have taken over the marketm frankly... bad timing and bad business management was the downfall of both companies I suppose. But really, if any of these products, I'm thinking Falcon would have been the one to tackle games like Doom and gained foothold past -92. Of course that was never going to happen.

  • @AtariCrypt

    Doom is available for the Falcon and the ST/STe has games like Wolfenstein and many others. I think you're right though, the Amiga and ST failed because of their companies. The hardware more or less stayed dormant when you compare it to the PC world. And if you sleep... Shame :/ Both machines are awesome which makes it all even worse to an oldie like me! cheers for popping by :)

    The improved FMV sound and a blitter can make a ton of differences. It was too bad that the blitter was not standard to the original ST, for it would have given the Amiga more competition than making the 68000 handle everything. I have ST's and an STE, but it's too bad very little used the improvements, but it was now so late in the game. Nice demo....

    68000 wasn't designed with 1 instruction per cycle multimedia extension. 68020 has a 32-bit barrel shifter. 68000 is good for hosting a 32-bit OS.

    Knowing a bit about an old ST hardware and how people forced it to display more colors than it really was designed to, I'm still unsure how some effects were done, especially the part starting at 2:00. I'm having some crazy ideas, like using the blitter to accelerate pallete swaps in color registers... Great job.

    Back in the day (early nineties I think) I did some modifications to display code of Photochrome, so It could do animations (image swaps). It fooled even Atari veterans - they thought my ST was a Falcon (They asked why I bother with showing those old FLI animations. Then they saw the hardware. Priceless). So you are both right and wrong. True, I should folows modern scene closer, both 8- and 16-bit, as I like to watch what people did and think how they achieved that. At the same time I'm quite aware what else could be done using those puny 16 Shifter registers and bunch of MOVEM commands. Unfortunately, you are also right that I should take time to explore. The only resource you can never get back.

    +Atari Crypt I was able to find archive with Photochrome animator I talked about, along with some sample animations. The trouble is that UX is in my native language, so it will be bit hard to use. And, since I don't remember exactly how the menus were, and it would take some time to fire up one of my Atari machines, the only way to refresh my memory is to run it in some emulator. Your decision if you want this as it is right now, or wait unitl I will be able to make a guide on how to use it. Apart from that, I was mainly an utils man (for example, i did the library that handles stuff inside windows you will see in that program, before that I wrote lots of assembly for 8-bit machines), a hardware man (among other stuff I still have ACSI to SCSI adapter, which I modified so it had parity bit generator and was able to handle multiple devices on SCSI bus, unlike the original designs), and when I contributed to this fanzine atarionline.pl/v01/index.php?ct=biblioteka&id=latest&ucat=8&subaction=showfull#zin=STEfan__rok=1992 I was able to decipher few popular demo effects, and show how they were done in plaintext (GFA Basic). Yep, that was much more fun than Web development.

  • @Foebane72

    I'm guessing that the Shifter (is that its name?) is responsible for the sheer number of colours on-screen. I knew the Atari ST was capable of this because of the old Spectrum 512 demos.

  • @AtariCrypt

    @AtariCrypt

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Foebane72 there's all kinds of programming tricks to get the most from out of the ST. This demo is for the STe however, so even more colours. But we see this all the time in many games too. Just look at Gods, Turrican, or Venus Flytrap for example. Hardly any game sticks to 16 colours.

    How many on screen colors here?

  • @evldhs

    @evldhs

    4 жыл бұрын

    The pictures have a theoretical of 96 perceived colours per scanline (48 real colours with dual field interlace) in 273 scanlines, so by optimizing the picture just to show maximum amount of colours, the maximum is 26208 on screen at once. The three pictures in the demo has 11083, 12663 and 9631 respectively. The intro and end animations are single field and have a limit of 4096 colours on screen, actual colours varies between frames but between 400-1000 per frame.
