Atari Jaguar VR Prototype Game? Virtuality's Zone Hunter Comparison!
Today I'm comparing supposed pics of Atari Jaguar VR version of Zone Hunter versus a video of the arcade version, both done by Virtuality.
** I WAS WRONG - Important Video Edit ** At 2:10, you can see the "outside complex door scene". Compare that to the speculated Jaguar version's orange floor pic. The barrels are a darker blue, are arranged differently ( stacked ) and there are more of them.
- If you look closely to the outside pic, there IS an enemy rendered on the RIGHT; in the video the enemy is on the LEFT and makes his way over to your left..
- The time box in the pics is of higher resolution and may be a shaded polygon.
- There is what appears to be a bullet counter in the "Jag" version.
- No where in the video can you see a third person view that the pics offer, but that's not to say you could not change the view in the arcade version.
Given the frame rate of the original, the Jag's capabilities and what they did with Missile Command 3D, I feel it's possible they had at least a demo up and running at some point. I'm guessing 20-30fps.
These could also be pics of a different build of the original, but what a fun ride this was.

Thanks for this. The jaguar search results on KZread are usually some of the most boring of any retro console. This video added much needed spice.
Fascinating video, thanks for sharing! If only that game got finished, too. Would have made for a great addition to the Jag's library.
Dactyl.Joust was HVS.
I spoke with Martin Brownlow and he never mentioned any build in progress for the Jag. He said he had a doom-like engine that was running 2-3x faster than Doom though but that was the extent. Granted that was quite some time after. As far as it running on the Jag, I could believe it to be fully possible since Martin was an amazing programmer. MC3D tells all, it was insanely fast with the VR headset.

You can find more comments by Martin Brownlow in a interview by Jaguar Explorer Online (IIRC) regarding Missile Command 3D
This just might've been the game that truly showed what the Jaguar could really do

Well the guy who programmed Missile Command 3D was very competent, as was the rest of his team.
From Wikipedia, and there are references : " The headset was capable of tracking based on an infra-red signal received from a base station with at least a 120 degree field of view. Connections were included with the future intent of adding additional base stations for the full 360 degrees.[52] At least one game title was produced by Virtuality for the peripheral, which was a VR version of Missile Command and a demonstration version of Zone Hunter was shown working.[53][54][55] "
Cool thank you! - glad you made this! edit - now I am more curious about this as I totally forgot what it was when I was doing the video.

You were trolling the toxic AA folks 😄
" The only game that works with the Jaguar and Jaguar VR system-Missile Command 3D(VR) Although a demo was shown of Zone Hunter running through the headset there is no known code to exist for the Jaguar. Alipine boards were discovered from Virtuality with only a "dead" battery. Any information the boards contained had been lost. The proposed pack-in was to be Zone Hunter. "
I think the photos I show are from the original two player version, because almost all the things I point out are in that version.kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoeIo7WuhK6qkco.html
So far no video but I have found some screen shots Atari released. In my quest I found some other things, I will do a follow up in a week or so.

Thanks Tolbat - You Rock
Maybe I WAS on to something
I doubt it. It looks to be an historically “improper” game for it…
