The flash backs that have been released since the 2000s helped keep Atari going. The complications have helped too. Also, the BigP Atari Jaguar emulator by Richard Whitehouse finally gives people awesome Atari Jaguar emulation that was impossible for decades. 🙂

@TheMultiGunMan I'm 24 & Atari is on my mind but not necessarily in a good way. I can't speak for other gen Z ppl but I see Atari as a brand that I mostly dislike but I want to like. I don't think their nostalgia pandering works as well as Nintendo or Sega's because their most successful product the VCS is too privative for most gamers from the 90s & afterwards & their other products we're successful enough to have that nostalgia factor. I think the Atati lynx, Atari 8bit computers , ataro ST & 5200 were cool hardware for their time with some good games but could have been better, the Atari 7800 & jaguar definitely could have been better though in terms of hardware & software.

@DragonChaserKev If you look at Atari's financial reports on their website they're so broke. They're pretty much ab indie company. They have lots of debt & I think about €5 million in cash reserves or something. Their 2022 sales were down from 2021 in terms of hardware & software Idk how much the Atari 50th anniversary collection & new hardware will make up for it in 2023. Their stock price on the French stock exchange is also terrible. They're a company that's almost on life support. Forgot the failing of the 1st 2 iterations of Atari (Atari Inc 1972-184 & Atari Corporation 1984-1996) Atari SA renamed from infograms is a complete shell of what infograms used to be as a triple AAA games developer in the 90s & 00s. Bad management smh

I’m buying it. I don’t want to download ROMs, mess around with SD cards, play it online or cobble something together. I simply want to pick it up, flip a switch and chill out on the couch, in a waiting room, or wherever and play some games. This does that. Form, fit and function is spot on. Great videos Jon, always look forward to your content.

I prefer the Pocket Players to the mini-arcade machines since I choose function over form and I really like how the Atari 2600 Pocket Player looks with the stripes (which remind me of the sort of stripes you'd see on American vans from the mid-1970s), I just wish it played more than Atari 2600 games. Even just including the arcade versions of the same games (where applicable) would've been great.

Compared to the other MyArcade handhelds, this one makes more sense. The Namco MA handhelds have NES roms of games available on every hardware imaginable, and that’s the arcade rom too at that. $30 for 2 games or one versus $60 for 100 is much more understandable.

I'll probably pick one up if the screen is fast enough. I did just get the Atari 50th Xbox one disc that I haven't opened. back in the day I grew up with Atari 2600 and I remember going to my parent's friends house who had kids and a 2600 and it was magic playing against others. later getting my own.. 6 switch not the later 4 switch... some of the magic was lost because playing against a person next to you was great. Coming from the arcade to the 2600 was often a downer.. missile command and pac man come to mind... but asteroids and space invaders caught the magic..... honestly today the Arcade1up partycades for $120-$210 when on scratch that itch very well. proper controls for Defender, Asteroids...The Centipede/Missile Command leaves a lot to be desired.... I might customize it a bunch or maybe gut and rework one of the 3/4 Tempest and changed controls. who knows.. but scratching the itch..fun, quick. yeah.. I'll probably buy it.. play it a few times and put it on the shelf, and I'm fine with that.. if they could synch two up to play head to head, that would be great..

I understand there was a version of the Blaze Retro Handheld console with an SD Card slot, mine doesn't have that. While I like my Retro TV Handheld, I think the emulation is kind of inaccurate. Yes I know it's running PAL games so they're a bit slower, but the sound is an octave higher than it should be as far as I know. I have Atari Vault on my PC and the sounds in that are an octave lower, I think they're at the correct octave in Atari Vault. Hopefully this pocket player will have accurate emulation functions.

Nice motivations, I agree with them all. There's an extra reason why these Atari branded products still continue to be released: the Atari legacy. As you already said, we will buy these things over and over, again and again. The reason? Because Atari is an icon, is a symbol of a generation, a generation who influenced even further generations (like me, that I was born in the 80s but I got a 2600 Junior in 1992). It's just nostalgia? No, it isn't. There's something more, something I can't explain....but the Atari 2600/VCS will always will be a part of me. For the ones who can't understand, please don't ask...because you'll still continue to don't understand. 👾💜

I say this as a huge ATARI fan, collector and gamer but enough. It will likely sell to the same people who ANYTHING with an official ATARI label on it. More whoring out the name to cash in on nostalgia. We have already had TWO similar handhelds previously, I hate that these tend to have at most OK or passable quality, TINY SCREENS that are not even that great which is odd in it self considering a large portion of the market it aimed at are much older with vision that is likely not as good as it use to be or worse. Yes it will be cheap and you will get what you pay for but I already got like a dozen various handhelds, android devices, modded handhelds all of which are capable of emulating and running 2600 ROMS on superior quality hardware with bigger and better screens, think I'll just slap an ATARI sticker on any when of them, perhaps some wood grain stickers as well and be done with it. I have Flashback 2, just about every version of original Atari 2600 console (Woody / Vader / Jr.) adaptors for Colecovision and 5200 to play the carts, Coleco Gemini and more. I'm good, no more money spent to play the same games in a less superior way once again, official and nice ATARI nostalgic styling be damned 😝😝

I relate to your feelings, Max. And for you and I, there are a dozen better solutions. But you get where I'm coming from, right? For consumers who didn't buy something from three years ago or know how to begin to mod a handheld, this will be an attractive product.

@@GenXGrownUp I totally agree with your view on who it's for for sure, the person who will spot it, think back to the days of simple fun playing 2600 as a kid, see it includes a ton of games and pick it up, heck at that price maybe grabs some as gifts for friends or relatives etc. Oh I get it, my points were definitely my own reason for having no interest in it personally, though I still wish they at least maybe bump up the screen size and quality as well an SD card slot for those who'd at least want to add roms since it's all emulation anyways but again, that's just me lol.

It's not just this Atari handheld, it's all the My Arcade handhelds, I just don't see them for me at all. I mean, yeah, I love to collect stuff, but I also have a limited budget. This particular one costs 47 euros on Amazon where I live, and that by itself strikes me a little pricy qhen compared to other options out there, as it's using normal batteries, isn't adapted well for paddle games, and just... all the photos I've seen it looks like a cheap gimmick. Now, compare that to the Taito Super Pocket I got on offer from Amazon for 44 euros, which has very good build quality, more demanding games, rechargeable battery, updatable firmware, and the Evercade slot, and there's just no competition in that sense. The other My Arcade systems like the mini game cabinets or the Atari Pro I can't really say, although the latter I am seeing negatives in the positioning of the buttons, it looks like it's trying to be a jack of all trades. So, I really can't see myself getting anything My Arcade, especially with the alternatives out there for me to spend my limited funds on.

Lots of consumers would disagree with that hyperbole. Do you think licensing out to My Arcade is preventing Atari from supporting their VCS? I'm not sure the two are related. If anything, this licensing arrangement will surely put more money in Atari's pocket and improve their sustainability.
