I got this game for Christmas when I was a little girl. It was on a "5 games for the price of 1" cartridge and the games went "Frogger, Boxing, Skiing, Seaquest and Stampede" and I loved Seaquest and Stampede, thought Boxing and Skiing were okay but I hated Frogger when II first tried it because I couldn't get the frog home. Then I tried getting the frog IN BETWEEN the green squares instead of on them and my fondness of the game increased 100 fold.

Another one of those games that make you wonder, why does a frog die in water?

This was the 1st videogame I ever played, I still love it, it is simple and addictive. Back then, things like, how big the frog is compared to the cars, didnt really matter, or if the frog dies underwater, who cares?? it was all about fun.

The flicker on the one row is due to a hardware limitation; the machine has two eight pixel wide sprites called "players", and two one-pixel-wide sprites called "missiles", which works great with simple shoot-out type games, but is very limiting with complex games like Frogger. There is a function to turn one sprite into two or three identical sprites to produce, for example, the row of three logs, but still there it is very limiting. One workaround is to change the color/shape/position of the player between scan lines to produce different sprites in different vertical regions of the screen, but to get more than one object into one vertical space (the log, the machine-controlled frog, and the player-croled frog, for example) sprites had to be reused; quickly switched back and forth between two different shapes and positions, producing that flicker.

Luckily the flicker wasn't so obvious on old analogue televisions.

That's right, and emulators recorded to KZread look far, far worse than the original hardware does on a regular CRT television.

@@MarioTetris998 No, the game was not that bad. I think the issue is that Atari games liked to quickly copy identical sprites from one place to another after the vertical refresh finishes with one spot. but before it starts on the the new location it needs to go to. On the real Atari or even with MAME, stuff didn't disappear like that. That's only happening because of the limited frame rate of this KZread video messing with that sprite trick.
