ATAK, HAMMER, and Baofengs - The Bad News

So, yeah, spent way to much time trying to get the Android Team Awareness Kit (or Android Tactical Assault Kit if you prefer) running on my Baofengs using HAMMER. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and I can't figure out how to make it. So, next up I'll play with LoRa and Meshtastic some, then move on to better radios. I WILL get ATAK running over the air....

I really appreciate this style of video - Title is clear and not clickbait - Within the first 1.5 minutes I'm told the main answer to the question I asked and get the opportunity to opt-out of how you got to the answer - Followed by in depth explanations The sad thing is, doing all this basically hurts your channel. Keep it up though!

Roughly what frequency are you running on the radios? On the Ham radio "2 meter" band (144-148 Mhz) we hams typically run 1200 baud, but up in the uhf band (420-450 Mhz) we can run 9600. I'm not saying that's your problem. But it may be a contributing factor.

For an out of a box solution, MobillinkD. Too many android flavors and hardware to make software modems to make it a reliable choice. The problem has to do with how much hardware your willing to carry- and your budget. If you factor in "field conditions" only a few options will be practical and reliable. I made it work using Retivis RT3S radios, and Antyone an AT 878, in analog only. The digital transfer changes something about the signal just enough to make it not work. There is some kind of echo or reverb in the signal that screws up the audio tones. Use a B-tech APRS cable. Make sure that you're using a phone that has a 3.5mm jack and not a usb-c/3.5mm adapter. All the radio is doing is transmitting audio tones, the radio isnt doing the decoding of the tones so baud rate shouldnt matter. Check and make sure that your VOX setting on the radio, if it allows, is set to no delay, and the setting in the hammer app is set to half a second or so. I think that may be the problem with the UV5 radios, is the VOX delay in the radio is longer than the allowable setting in the hammer app. The Btech APRS cable, and having a phone with a 3.5mm audio jack, and not having to rely on a usb-c to 3.5mm adapter seems to be key. the usb-c/3.5mm adapters are kind of a grab bag when it comes to quality and capability. They lie when they say that they will allow you to make and answer calls, which is a requirement for the hammer app to work.

Perhaps we need to rewrite the code? While I think I can pass code on between a server and client using a program. ATAK is not user friendly and I have no idea how to get around its terrible design. (Its not designed to work in desperate situations, I'm doubting its reliability). Its as if we need to re-write the entire program again from the ground up with the focus of ensuring nothing goes offline. (Staying Online needs to be critical).

Use digital radios. You are trying to push a digital signal across an analog radio. The result is always going to be some amount of distortion or interference that will break the connection. Digital either works or it doesn't; there's no equivalent of the 1x1-to-5x5 scale like in analog radio. When you convert a digital signal to analog and then one tiny bit of interference gets introduced-TINY-you go from perfectly readable to not readable at all. You won't get most or even some or even a little bit of the original signal through, you will get nothing, because when the receiver tries to convert the (distorted) analog signal back to a digital one, 100% of the information will be corrupted and lost. LoRa and Meshtastic will work because they use digital signals to transmit information. There is no digital-to-analog-back-to-digital conversion taking place. It will take a severe disruption to break the signal, so severe that it would also break any analog audio transmission. Another solution would be to use a digital radio, like some sort of P25 system. There would be no conversions taking place, it's a pure digital signal all the way, so you would have no interference problem.
