At the Prancing Pony: a literary and a real life encounter!

I read you Tolkien's description of the first meeting with Strider and then tell a story of how a similar encounter happened in real life!

I spent several years at an RAF Base in East Anglia in the mid 80’s, I was with the United States Air Force. One of my regrets in life was I didn’t stay in England when my service time ended. I loved your country and still do. I loved the history, the countryside, the weather, the people, the pubs and those wonderful pints. I traveled often while I was there. In Cambridge I enjoyed napping in the sun while lying in the grass next to the river after a lunch of fish and chips and a pint. I’m retired now and would love to spend my remaining years in England but your immigration rules won’t allow it. I do plan on returning for a few weeks of fly fishing and sitting on the bank of some of those rivers smoking my pipe.

I could listen to you read me Tolkien every day for the rest of my life and I would never get sick of it! ❤
I could watch you everyday.
Feeling relax and enjoying a dram of Laphroaig lore or two . Prancing Pony is the kind of Inn I search out on my travels , a jar of ale and a quite corner to observe people in between reading Tolkien or the like . Thank you Mr Guite
This is so comforting and awesome at the same time. I have that very edition with Alan Lee illustrations. Im going to to a video on how I acquired it and the lifetime it has been with me. "Books have a life of their own. They pass from one to another. Always living on an endless journey." (my quote) Bree Town has a special place in my heart. When reading it, my mind created a perfect layout I could follow to the Prancing Pony to have mutton stew and cider ales and smoke my pipe and tarry with the locals. Its description is so vivid to the reader. Just brilliant. Thank you Malcolm.

Yet the character Bilbo (in the sense of character traits), all physical characteristics aside, was rather egocentric in my estimation after reading so many chapters about him. For example, he could have easily understood that he was far too removed from the situation to go to Mt. Doom, yet he seemed to have thought he had a chance.

Thank you so much. The Prancing Pony is one of my favorite parts of Tolkiens world. Love your reading and your channel.
In my opinion, the scene in Bree is one of the best in the trilogy. The mood, tension, and overall feeling are perfect literature. It's cold and rainy out, smoky and loud inside. And the Riders are coming.
Another wonderful reading, thank you so much!
A pleasure as always, Mr. Guite!
I love your mention of life and literature weaving together. I experienced that during my time in the American Northwest while reading “Ecotopia”, and also during my time in Buenos Aires while reading “El Túnel” and “Rayuela”.
Malcolm, I would happily listen to you speak on any subject you choose, for as long as you might choose to speak. Thank you for every second you put into these videos.
A wonderful reading and chat about the importance of a good pub with tasty beers on offer. Mine is called Church Street pub. It allows me to tell me elderly Mother that I went to Church today. 😊
This man is a national treasure, so happy that somehow I stumbled on this channel
Phil Keggy, I haven't heard his name is 2 forevers. One of the best guitar players in the world and he get very little recognition. This channel is really charming. Thank you.
As I recall The Prancing Pony in the movies was the only place when we get a little cameo from the director of the trilogy himself, Peter Jackson. He happens to be leaving the inn as he gets a big bite on a carrot. Interesting little fact. I've loved this charming yet somewhat ominous inn since the very first time I visited many years ago reading The Fellowship for the first time. An excellent worldbulding from the very beginning. Cheers.
Malcolm, thank you for these very lovely and meaningful moments. A welcomed respite in today's troubled world.
Places of comfort, conversation and good eats and drinks. The Prancing Pony, The Green Dragon and Tom Bombadil’s house. Would you consider doing another video on Tom?
Superb , as always, Padre. I shall be drinking an ale tomorrow and thinking of ye . Take care.
I read The Lord of the Rings through, just about every year. I guess it's about time to start again! I love hearing little excerpts from Tolkien's life; it would have been a real privilege to meet him. I suppose second best, is reading every scrap of his letters and writings I can get.
I could listen to you read the whole book. I hope the Eagle and Child will reopen soon. My daughter is an Oxford student and we do miss visiting it
Great topic today!
What a beautiful reading area! Everything you need - some books and a comfy chair!
"First drafts don't have to be great drafts" I wish my writing teachers would have had the same sentiment!
There is an inn, a merry old inn......They come from Mordor. Save us!........One thing drives out another..........(oh for a cozy fireplace amidst the Misty Mountains with a pipe and cup of hot tea.....sigh)

Stay well friend. . im almost done watching this video and im editing this comment, but id also like to say that when i watch your videos, of you smoking and talking and reading, i swear i can literally smell the smoke, i can feel the books, the armchair, i can vaguely smell the kind of old, stale books, with all their words and knowledge. . .its really a great thing. . . .it reminds me of something that ive missed for a long time. . .

Which Cotswold village resembles Bree? Well, thinking what they would've been like back in the 50s, with hardly any private cars, and without modern developments, I cast my vote for Bradford on Avon.

Will do! I’ve written about it briefly in the final chapter of The Inklings and King Arthur
Another great session with you Mr. Guite!
What is even funnier is that 'Trotter' in the original drafts isn't a man of Westernesse, heir to the kingdom of Gondor, but a hobbit with *wooden shoes* who is called trotter because of the noise the shoes make! Like you said, if one of the greatest fantasy stories ever penned started off with Bungo and Trotter the hobbit with wooden shoes, it's quite reassuring to us lesser mortals when we take up the pen and get less than amazing results on the first go around.
I think I’ll play that one for the kids while we are playing a game later.
i love your story telling and your pipe is a nice touch

Not to find something bad in something good, but I find the majority of the old inns are not what they used to be and the majority simply cater for townies wishing to eat posh grub at extortionate prices. Gone are the days of the humble sandwich and pork pies atop the bar for those who wish for a slight bite between pints. Banning smoking finished the pubs of days gone by helped by the ever increasing hike in Ale prices. However, Thankyou for sharing another snippet with us Malcolm it’s always enjoyable.
