I spent several years at an RAF Base in East Anglia in the mid 80’s, I was with the United States Air Force. One of my regrets in life was I didn’t stay in England when my service time ended. I loved your country and still do. I loved the history, the countryside, the weather, the people, the pubs and those wonderful pints. I traveled often while I was there. In Cambridge I enjoyed napping in the sun while lying in the grass next to the river after a lunch of fish and chips and a pint. I’m retired now and would love to spend my remaining years in England but your immigration rules won’t allow it. I do plan on returning for a few weeks of fly fishing and sitting on the bank of some of those rivers smoking my pipe.

This is so comforting and awesome at the same time. I have that very edition with Alan Lee illustrations. Im going to to a video on how I acquired it and the lifetime it has been with me. "Books have a life of their own. They pass from one to another. Always living on an endless journey." (my quote) Bree Town has a special place in my heart. When reading it, my mind created a perfect layout I could follow to the Prancing Pony to have mutton stew and cider ales and smoke my pipe and tarry with the locals. Its description is so vivid to the reader. Just brilliant. Thank you Malcolm.

Yet the character Bilbo (in the sense of character traits), all physical characteristics aside, was rather egocentric in my estimation after reading so many chapters about him. For example, he could have easily understood that he was far too removed from the situation to go to Mt. Doom, yet he seemed to have thought he had a chance.

He happens to be leaving the inn as he gets a big bite on a carrot. Interesting little fact. What is even funnier is that 'Trotter' in the original drafts isn't a man of Westernesse, heir to the kingdom of Gondor, but a hobbit with *wooden shoes* who is called trotter because of the noise the shoes make! Like you said, if one of the greatest fantasy stories ever penned started off with Bungo and Trotter the hobbit with wooden shoes, it's quite reassuring to us lesser mortals when we take up the pen and get less than amazing results on the first go around.

Pubs and pub culture is ancient and extremely important in English history. It is a grand shame that it is a declining phenomena, as it helped form brilliant minds like Tolkien.

"Trotter" would have been an unfortunate name also because it suggests trotters, the feet of sheep or pigs used for food.

But so evocative of that humourous classic "Only Fools and Horses" ... 😁

After this, I had to buy the extended edition of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. And, my Salty Dogs, Bob's Chocolate Flake, and my new Peterson's Dracula Sandblasted (127) Fishtail just arrived, so it's shaping up to be an epic weekend. Just need a nice single malt now, and the world is as it should be. Thank you.

Not to find something bad in something good, but I find the majority of the old inns are not what they used to be and the majority simply cater for townies wishing to eat posh grub at extortionate prices. Gone are the days of the humble sandwich and pork pies atop the bar for those who wish for a slight bite between pints. Banning smoking finished the pubs of days gone by helped by the ever increasing hike in Ale prices. However, Thankyou for sharing another snippet with us Malcolm it’s always enjoyable.
