Pretty shocked that "City of God" didn't make either list. I expect most people to be unaware of that gem but usually critics are aware of its greatness. Still, an entertaining list(s). =)

I agree. My third favourite film of 2002 (behind Spirited Away and Talk To Her). To me, City of God would be an honourable mention for the entire decade.

Siskel and Ebert will always be my favorite, but these guys were pretty good.

Michael hits again. Not only is right that Million Dollar Baby is crap, but he is just as spot on for putting Minority Report on his list. Tom Cruise is a fucking nut, and I don't like him as a person, but I can't deny that he has been in a ton of movies that are really good. MR is one of them. Michael is right on both of the #10s.

ATTA BOY AGAIN TO MICHAEL!!! Once is a simple, very low budget, FANTASTIC film, thanks in no small part, but not at all entirely, because of the beautiful, haunting song "Falling Slowly" (one of the best movie songs of all time... it won the Oscar... somewhat famously, host Jon Stewart brought out Marketa Irglova again after a commercial break after she had been played off without being able to give her acceptance speech). Big "thumbs up" to Michael for this choice. Tony missed the boat on this one. I like The Pianist ok, but like even Tony notes, there have been (even at the time of this show's recording) a bazillion movies about WWII and the holocaust. It is hard for me to compartmentalize at this point, perhaps, to give this film it's fair due, but I don't put it at the level that Tony does. The subject matter often makes movies feel like more than they are. To the opposite of what Michael says here, I think Schindler's List is WAY more powerful and important and "good" as a movie than The Pianist can dream to be.

10 best of the 2000s, in no particular order: Almost Famous Unfaithful The Prestige Zodiac The Wrestler Once Memento Before Sunset Juno The Curious Case of Benjamin Button HONORABLE MENTION: Inglourious Basterds - There is stuff to shit on, but the opening scene in the farm house and the scene in the bar are about as good as it gets for individual chunks.

I generally respect Michael as a movie reviewer, but putting Ratatouille as the #2 movie of the decade makes me question his sanity. I am not saying it is bad. But ... wow. A.I. is not a great movie, but it is better than a lot of people give it credit for. It DOES cover a lot of sci-fi ground that has been covered before, is covered now, and will undoubtedly be covered more in the future, and the ending can be seen as manipulative and formulaic, but it is a pretty solid picture overall.

Never really saw Wall-E, though it was playing in the background more than once. Never got through There Will Be Blood. Started watching it about 4 times, and something always cock blocked watching the whole thing. Can't really vote on either of their #1s.

Who was the Einstein that decided to take these two off the air? These two were great. The next best thing after Siskel & Ebert. I know I must have seen this, but I don't remember it. HOLY SHIT is Michael ever right on Million Dollar Baby. One of the most overrated, schlocky pieces of crap of all time. Bravo Michael for having the balls to stand up to the autopilot praise of that garbage picture. The only other overhyped tripe of that magnitude I can think of off of the top of my head is Whiplash. Right again by Michael when he notes that Unforgiven IS truly worthy of praise.

Actually, both of these are very good lists and a number of these choices are what I would pick as well. I miss AO Scott's NYT film reviews - he no longer does movie criticism. He was an exceptionally clever and perceptive writer and it will be hard to find a new critic as good or better than him. The one film they both missed: In the Mood for Love - easily one of the greatest films of the early 21st century.

Skipping Michael's #9... Gosford Park. I have STILL never seen it, and have been meaning to for years. Don't want to hear them give anything away. .... Never saw 25th Hour, and don't really care about it. I don't even recollect the title. Odd pick, from that standpoint. I do love me some Ed Norton, but it being wrapped in 9/11, combined with my lack of even recalling the movie's existence, tends to make me think it is not deserving of a "Best of" list.

Zodiac, much like JFK, includes some bullshit that the author of a book(s) made up and offered up as fact. And, like JFK, Zodiac is very well made, chilling, well acted, contains some actual facts, and is a very solid movie, in and of itself. I broadly love David Fincher movies. He has a great movie making style that suits me very well. The mood/look/feel/pace/story telling/vibe of his films really capture the viewer. Never hear of The Best of Youth, so Michael wins #6 by default.

American Sniper, indeed, was a massive cliche-fest. But Eastwood has done so much better (ie Unforgiven, A Perfect World, Million Dollar Baby, etc)

#5s... Saw Where the Wild Things Are... sort of... as a child entertainment device at home... don't remember it enough to offer a critique. Never saw Y Tu Mama Tambien. No vote on the #5s. Not enough information.

#7s... United 93 was essentially disaster porn, preying upon people's emotions regarding 9/11 and the forever wondering of what it was like to be on that flight. Regarding the latter, it was trying to steal from Titanic, but without the details of the story being known to be true via any actual survivors telling them. Tony is right on that one... not so great. 4M 3W & 2D was a powerful movie when it came out, and wow... does it ever have more power today, May of 2024, with many jurisdictions in the USA imposing all sorts of insane, stone age, anti-choice laws. I hadn't thought of it in quite some time, even with the craziness of the anti-choice oppression currently hitting society, and this immediately struck me as something that EVERYONE should see NOW. Tony wins the #7s.

Why not just do it in one show? And notice the first two choices were Roger's favorite film of that year?

I think it is because the ratings weren't high so they needed some way for the viewers to keep tuning in.

Great lists and I watched all these shows in their day. Despite the plethora of review podcasts, there remains a space for these concise video-based movie debate shows imho. The genuine dilemma has been the departure of esteemed critics globally. Very sad turn.

Ok... Tony just gave me another one to add to the "All Time Overrated" list. Brokeback Mountain is a piece of shit that got way too much credit because of the subject matter. The movie, in and of itself, isn't good. If it had been a love story between a man and a woman, this movie would be seen as very ordinary, at best. The "gay" of it made it one of those movies that people thought they were supposed to go apeshit over. It wasn't good. Never heard of Climates. No comment.
