The ride was grossly unsafe. My wife and i rode it a year before this happened to the day and almost to the exact time it happened. At the time i commented that it felt like the boat would flip and that i didn't feel safe. I said it was only a matter of time before someone was hurt or killed. May they Rest in Peace :( :( :(

It must say somthing about their safety checks when almost every ride broke down several times a day and even queuing for a ride wasnt a guarantee of getting on it because there was a chance it was going to break down before you got on it

Thsi ride is not dangerous, its completly safe, the unsafe feeling that you are about to fall out is part of the ride! This was a tragic accident, but you have to remeber that there are maybe 100 of these rides in operation, and only on one ride afer more than one decade after the opening this happend.

This doesn’t tell the whole story of how horrific this scene was. 2 of them drowned and the other 2 were crushed by the machinery under the conveyer belt. It took until early the next morning to get every part of them out of there, the first responders had to seek counselling.

My husband and I don't let our kids ride certain rides that give us a bad feeling. We don't do traveling carnival rides at all. People probably think we're overprotective but we live near a now defunct water park that had a slide that killed a boy due to their negligence. When that water park opened that slide, we told our kids they weren't riding it because it looked sketchy. We were right. I'm not an anxious person but I don't trust my kids' lives to some of these rides I see.

i just read the coroner's report. so the conveyer belt is not like a treadmill or airport conveyer where ur on top of a solid material that loops the whole machine, but rather just spaced out wooden planks that move with nothing underneath them. for description's sake, you cannot stand on the conveyer belt, if u tried to jump on it while it was operating u would fall thru the big empty space between each wooden slat & u would be cut in half by them moving. think moving train tracks elevated off the ground. what happened was 1 of 2 water pumps necessary for the ride to function failed & within 70 something SECONDS of that failure those people were dying. all the water rapidly drained, causing a different raft to become wedged as it fell from a floating position in the water to directly laying on the rails of the ride (next to but off the conveyer belt), then the ill fated raft bumped into it & the conveyer still running obviously kept pushing it into the wedged raft & so there was no where to go but up & both rafts were pushed vertical before the raft with no injuries thankfully fell back to a rest position & the ill fated raft went completely sideways. the raft basically landed with one side touching the floor of the ride - a little gap between the elevated conveyer belt & the elevated ride track just big enough for sideways raft to have fallen into. like if this is the belt & track: ㅛㅛㅛㅛㅛㅛㅛ ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ the raft was like this: ㅛㅛㅛㅛㅛㅛㅛ↕️ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ so the tops of the people heads faced the conveyer belt & given more clearance the conveyer belt would have gone above their chest.... but the was no clearance so those wooden planks... just whacked into their heads & chests & tore them open & apart. the two kids were strapped into the seats most lifted into the air, so they were able to climb out of the raft & off the ride without being struck by the wood planks, but they saw everything. medics said even if they had world class heart & brain & trauma doctors waiting there at the ready, they couldnt have saved those people. they died relatively quickly & did not have time to drown.

Underrated comment. I've been following this horrific incident the past couple days and I've been having such a difficult time understanding an visualizing the cause of death. Morbid but, ultimately just wanting to understand what happened. So many different sources left out a ton of information and sugar-coated a LOT. (Understandable, however, for the families and surviving victims probabaly wouldn't wish to see that on the news). But thank you so, so much for the description. And by God, bless those children survivors and witnesses. And Rest in peace to the victims

I found the full autopsy if anyone wants to read about their injuries POST MORTEM FINDINGS Kate Goodchild 25. An external and full internal post-mortem examination was carried out on 26 October 2016 by Pathologist, Dr Dianne Little. A CT scan and toxicological testing was also conducted.7 26. The post-mortem examination revealed the presence of severe chest and abdominal injuries. A band of abrasions and bruising were found across the upper and mid trunk, as well as the corresponding area across the left upper arm. Internal injuries found included multiple rib fractures, fragmentation of the liver, transection of the duodenum and torn blood vessels to the right kidney. These injuries were the direct cause of death and suggestive of a crushing blow to this area of the body. There was no evidence of drowning. Luke Dorsett 27. An external and full internal post-mortem examination was carried out on 26 October 2016 by Pathologist, A/Professor Alex Olumbe. A CT scan and toxicological testing was also conducted.8 28. The external examination revealed extensive bruising and abrasions over the entire body. Multiple severe contusions and crushing injuries to the neck, spine and ribs, as well as the liver, were found following the internal examination. These injuries were consistent with having been caused by multiple compressive impacts, particularly to the cervical area, and upper section of the thoracic spinal column, resulting in severing of the brain stem, as well as other injuries. Death would have been rapid. There was no evidence of drowning. Cindy Low 29. An external and full internal post-mortem examination was carried out on 25 October 2016 by Pathologist, Dr Dianne Little. A CT scan and toxicological testing was also conducted.9 30. Extensive multiple injuries were observed to the head, chest, abdomen, pelvis and limbs, the combined effect of which was found to be the cause of death. Roozbeh Araghi 31. An external and full internal post-mortem examination was carried out on 25 October 2016 by Pathologist, A/Professor Alex Olumbe. A CT scan and toxicological testing was also conducted.10 32. I have always noted that you'd not want to fall out of the ride near the conveyor section/s, as it looks brutal down there. Steel + wood frames + steel / wood moving parts, and a lot of water.

They said the ride has been at the park for 30 years. And this is the first accident. So I'd say the safety on the ride was good. I think it says more about the park's ability to _maintain_ those safety systems.

This wasn't the first accident or incident by a long way. It was all just swept under the carpet. Here is a quote from Australia's ABC network, reporting the findings of coroner Aaron Guilfoyle - "A coronial inquest into the four deaths made findings of a series of failures at the park, including safety and maintenance systems that the coroner described as "rudimentary at best" and "frighteningly unsophisticated." "The failures of the defendant were not momentary," Mr Guilfoyle said. "The failures did not occur solely on the day of the incident, they were failures well before then, which led ultimately to what transpired. " In a statement issued after the fine, Ardent Leisure chairman Gary Weiss and CEO John Osborne said they accepted the court's decision to impose the largest fine in Queensland history for a workplace tragedy. "Ardent accepts responsibility for this tragedy without qualification or reservation," their statement said."

There's a ride exactly like this in Canada. I've only rode it once with my family but I felt uncomfortable when our boat approached the conveyor part. It felt like it was higher than the water level and would somehow turn the entire boat sideways when it went onto the rotating ramp. Other than that, the main part of the ride just floating on the river was fine.

Usually from my experience, riders will exit the raft/float before it reaches the elevator or conveyor belt. This is my first time seeing this type of design where the riders stay in the raft, as it is on the lift hill.
