Particularly appreciate your perspective on this as I’m looking for a laptop for similar work tasks. Given that it’s been 3 months, any changes or new info to share? I’m back and forth between this model and the Zephyrus M16

I like the bigger screen so the G18 is a strong machine for all around desktop replacement while still remaining portable. Even more portable and of course more power constrained, the M16 is also a great option. But with the M16, I would not pay the premium for anything beyond a 4060. You're not going to get more than 100W of power to the GPU in best case scenarios and the 4060 and 4070 are fairly close this generation that it's not worth it in my opinion. If I wanted all out performance, I'd get the G18 with a 4080 or upgrade to the Scar 18 with a 4090.

Hey wish you'd reply me. The thing is what about the Eco Mode in the Armoury Crate software. Does it gives the same battery life or less. And does the 280W charger charges faster like 0 to 50 in just 30 mins like Asus told?

Eco Mode in Armoury Crate has a very specific function. It disables the RTX 4070 dGPU completely. The laptop then uses the Intel iGPU that is built into the i9-19380HX. This is supposed to help conserve battery power. If you combine this with the Battery Saver in your Windows 11 power settings, you should be able to get good battery life. I'll be covering Armoury Crate and the ASUS software in a dedicated video soon! As for fast charging, I only saw mention of this on the 330W power supply and the RTX 4080 version of this laptop. That laptop is not available in my country. The RTX 4070 version here has a 280W power supply and there is no mention of fast charging.

LAN port on your laptop is like what you corrected in your video only a gigabit LAN, while the G814JZ that comes with RTX 4080 does have a 2.5G LAN port. About 2 USB-C ports, the left one is thunderbolt 4 and right one is for Display Port and Power charge of 100W, so you can charge the laptop with a USB C Power Adapter that provides 100W through that port.

Big change tipp: If you show gameplay, please reduce the sound of the game so we can still be able to hear your voice. 🙂👍🏽

Does it need cooling pad while intensive gaming?

I got the 2023 4080 version for $1200. Is that a good price and value?

I saw some review about this laptop (Rog Strix 18) that when the screen is dark the display have bright corners flashing light. Is that apply to all Strix 18 or should I return it?

This is called backlight bleed. A little bit is acceptable for LCD IPS display such as this laptop has. If it’s too much however you can exchange your laptop and try your luck at the LCD panel lottery. Every LCD panel is different so some are better than others.

Hello mister ! Since then, do you still recomend this ? I am really planing to buy i9, gtx 4060 , 32 gb ram.. just wondering what sre your thiughts in it after these months. I am grabbing it for work, some light gaming and for overall main house pc ... I hope to have it proof for at least 4-5 years

Hello sir, I’m planning to buy the same laptop for my masters degree and for machine learning with some development. I want to dual boot it with Linux ubuntu for development related tasks. I’ve heard that there are some driver issues with the sound and display adaptors. Does this issue really affect anything as such? If there any such issue?

There can be such issues. The best thing is to make a bootable usb and boot into Ubuntu to test it out.

Yes and it keeps getting updated regularly. Very handy tool. Its become my go to over Ninite etc for installs and tweaks.

Hello ! First thanks for your review ! I live in Montréal and I'm hardly looking for a gaming laptop... I will mostly play Rocket League with it, and sometimes Warzone but it's less important for me. The 18" screen looks really nice for gaming but I wonder if the 4070 will do the job for that or should I buy a laptop with a 4080 ? (I found this one for just 100$ more : GIGABYTE AORUS 17H - 17.3" Thin Bezel FHD 1920x1080 360Hz Display - RTX 4080 12GB GDDR6 - Core i7-13700H - 16GB DDR5 RAM - 1TB SSD - Win11 = 3100$CA before tx) Which one do you think is the best for my use ? Or maybe have you some recommendations around those prices ? I also want to start to practice mix on DJ turntables but i think both of them will do the job. Thanks for your answer !

Hmm, it's a tough call. If you feel you don't need the extra power from the RTX 4080 then the 4070 and don't really care about the higher resolution 2K screen, then get the 4080 with the FHD display. It will push out crazy frame rates. But the bigger screen may be more useful as you can fit more stuff on screen and I believe that ASUS is a bit better build quality than Gigabyte since they're a larger OEM.

Hello...after running tweak run OO Shutup. My progress from 241 down to 170 was impressive. BUT ONE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT ARMOURY CRATE DOESN'T WORK. Do you have the above problem? I can't change fan mode with M4 button and open ARMOURY CRATE with M5 button.

Yes if you kill too many processes then this will happen. I had a similar problem. Had to reinstall Windows sadly because I could not remember which services to reinstalll to get it working again.

Did u have problems with coil whine or backlight bleed? i heard so many heavy negatives about this which shouldnt be normal

I think I got lucky in this regard. No coil whine on my unit. And for backlight bleed, I have a small patch on the bottom right hand corner near the edge, it's hardly visible and during normal operation can't be noticed easily.

I have a question regarding downscaling the resolution. If i was in a game and the FPS was poor, so I wanted to lower the resolution in order to get some more frames.... If I lower the resolution to 1080p, will it look like total garbage running 1080p on a 1600p panel?????

In my opinion downscaling looks like absolute 💩but your may differ. It's not the same thing at all as upscaling tech. It's better for you to play at the native resolution and use FSR2 or DLSS where available to have the GPU upscale the image from a lower resolution to 1600p in this case.

I have only seen the Omen 17.3 online. I had an Omen 15 back in 2021. I really enjoyed my time with it except for the small size screen. It probably has, imho, the best keyboard layout for a laptop… a TKL keyboard. I am very curious to see the usability on a 17.3 laptop for 2560x1600 scaled at 125% for daily use. I would say if you can get it where you live, grab it and give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the Omen 15. Just watch out for those sharp corners on the chassis. As always which one is better depends on so many factors, but much of it is personal preference.

There are pros and cons to both. The G18 can be cheaper and often goes on sale. The m18 you'll have to hunt for the right time to pull the trigger because Dell's pricing varies a lot more. I do like the mech keyboard on the m18 but the G18 display is better. You really cannot go wrong with either laptop though. Just be sure you pick the right GPU. 4080 or 4060 would be my recommendation.

@dreadowen616 It is safe, but if you don't know which things you're disabling then avoid them. You can still use it as an installer and tweaks for your system control panels, legacy start menu etc.

I really love this new G18 from asus the 4080 version however in my country only 4070 is available if I want to get 4080 I must buy a scar edition. However I don’t want to spend that much more money can you please tell me should I put more money and get the scar 4080 or get g18 4060 or just buy the 4070 please help

If you play games a lot AND play them mostly on a laptop then yes, pay the extra money and get the 4080. I’m trying to get my hands on a 4080 laptop for the channel to review. But even more important, look at the type of games you like to play. If you play games that still look/play fine at 60fps then check out which GPU gives you that experience. If you are competitive or do e-sports or play a lot of FPS games then it will be worth it to pay more and get the 4080 or even the 4090. Figure out what you like to play and where it’s comfortable/acceptable and enjoyable for you. Some games, like Anno 1800 for example, look fantastic even at 30fps so it depends.

I don't think i9-13980HX can handle 96GB of ram. Check the specs for the cpu and then try ram that matches. Maybe 2x32GB modulew max.

Can I use a 4 TB nvme 3.0 and the installed nvme ??

I no longer own it. My opinion is still the same. Aesthetics are not for everyone. Would prefer full sized keys for the whole keyboard. That said great screen, relatively light for what it was. Ran fairly well in terms of thermals and fan noise - as long as you manage performance expectations and don't just redline it. As for RTX 4070, still not a fan. 4080 or better would have served it right.

How do you carry this heavy laptop? I got it like one week ago and I am thinking of returning it.

I don't carry it very often. And when I do it's from my downstairs office to upstairs in my bedroom or using on the couch for a few hours. If I take it to work, it sits on the car set next to me lol.

At launch, I purchased this laptop, the 4070 model, from BestBuy in Canada for $2999 CAD. The 4080 version is available in the USA for $2499 USD (although with only 16GB of RAM). The 4090 version is also available for $3899 USD in the USA with 2TB instead of 1TB in the 4070 model. Prices and availability of all models are limited and will vary based upon your region.

Great Video and laptop... However a 4070 only! for that much money and such a good CPU it should have been the 4080/4090 model you got. For me all that and a 8GB 4070 is horrible.

You're right! Stay tuned. I've got a Razer Blade 18 with a 4060 coming in soon and an Alienware m18 r1 with a 4080 coming in the next couple of weeks.

rlly love rog what they did in this year, since i hope can save up more money so i think ill get G18 4060ver since 4060 its pretty enough for gaming and studying

Oh I have had coil whine issues on 2 other ASUS laptops I have owned. I got rid of them quickly before they became worthless as tech depreciates very fast. It is a hit and miss though. As I said, I got lucky with the Strix G18.

He is charging now for tools.

How did you manage to get it with No OS? Are you running Linux full time? My daily driver desktop has been running Ubuntu now for 2 years! I use Windows for editing and/or gaming. Also for devs the portability of a 16” is actually a happy compromise as I’m quickly figuring out.

Excuse me~ There are a lot of negative comments on the 4070 on the Internet~ Think 4050 60 80 is a better choice.. what do you think? I personally feel that 4070 is also a good choice~ It’s just compared with the previous ones, the improvement is not big.

I've been looking into this as well. I'm on the fence about whether I should go up to a 4080 laptop GPU or down to a 4060. I don't have as much time to play games so mostly my workflow will be video editing (as the only GPU requirement). In the past generations, it was a clear choice. Even though the 2060 and 3060 laptops were the best overall value, I felt for gaming enjoyment, the 2070 and 3070/3070ti laptops were a good middle ground. This generation though, you're right. The gap between the 4060 and 4070 is much smaller. I'll most probably be downgrading to a 4060 to get better overall value.
