For retail units, the bottom middle screw is supposed to be captive, you're not supposed to be able to pull it out all the way. You can start your pry tool at the gap there too.

Followed this guide step by step and it worked flawlessly. Installed a Sabrent 1TB drive. Make sure that you do all windows updates as well as the BIOS update from the My Asus app. I know some other people were having issues with the update stalling in the “checking” phase and that fixes it.

Hey there Phawx! Found your channel with the Ally videos, and I just have to appreciate your content man! Some of the recent videos were extremely insightful. Specially the one about the AutoTDP and the update that improves the Low TDP performance, Armory Crate and all that. However, there is still one thing that I would like to ask if it was improve, or still remais the same as the early reviews noted. The framerate cap on the side menu. Does it work now? Is it a hit or miss? And can it be customizable at all? I know we can limit the FPS using rivatuner, but being able to switch it on the fly would be pretty neat. Even more if we were able to put in the values that we want on those presets. I'm just wondering at this point, because no one mentioned it being fixed with that update. Hopefully this question also help others that have the same question as I do.

It served me well with the GPD Win 3 and the Aya Neo 2. For the ROG Ally, what do you recommend? I’ve read it uses a particular form of sleep by default?

Here are tips that not many people mention when upgrading to a new SSD: Before upgrading to the new SSD, login to Windows on the SSD installed on the Ally and update everything on Armory Crate SE, MyASUS app, and the bios. After installing the new SSD, when it ask you for your Wi-Fi during Cloud Recovery, USE your regular network and DO NOT USE your 5G network, connection will fail and will request you to use another WLAN. You may use your 5G network after it finish Cloud Recovery when you reach the Windows startup screen.

It worked after reinstalling the original drive and booting into Windows, then launching MYASUS app and installing all the updates. I had to reboot a couple of times until all the MYASUS updates were applied, including BIOS updates. I put the new drive in, started cloud recovery and it’s working. “Checking” took about ten seconds then it went on to install.

After the SSD installation, will I be able to connect with my XG Mobile eGPU (Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse) and then power on and enter BIOS?

Just want to clarify do you need to make a cloud backup before starting this process or can you just start this process fresh out of the box without making a cloud backup?

How long did this take? Would it just be quicker to use Clonezilla and an M.2 enclosure to clone the OEM drive and then expand the partitions?

So, before you remove your previous ssd, should we do something to make cloud recovery works? (Like backup process or something)

Hey man! Love the super objective content. May I ask your opinion on the Ally's future? Everyone is basically taking for granted the fact that Asus will make a new one in a year or so and leave this behind. Honestly I can see that happening but their work is only really needed for armory. Do you see steamOS running on this thing? Would it be of any benefit or would it just be better for Microsoft to launch a handheld version? I'm still unsure about what handheld to get: either the Deck, knowing how limited it already is both in performance and with its display, or the Ally, knowing it's basically a portable computer with W11. My main objective is emulating virtually everything, so the Ally has a serious advantage there, although I'd have heavily preferred if they went for a 720p screen. I've also been looking into the AOKZOE A1 Pro but it seems like its performance is good on paper but since it's 1080p it's basically the same as the Deck, not making use of the bigger battery. I fear the same for the Ally too.

The thing with Asus is they are not the same as Loki, Aokzoe Onex. There's a reason the Ally didn't launch in Indigogo or Kickstarter. Massive world wide launch! There's gonna be millions of these things just like Asus's laptops they are not just gonna abandon support because they sell to the masses and the amount of people that would complain can cause massive issues for them. Where as the smaller handheld companies are only selling at most 10 000 units so if they just end support the amount of people that complain can basically just be ignored and it won't effect the company as they push forward with a new campaign.

Hi, Phawx. I love your content. I was wondering if you could help me out with the Asus Rog Ally. I received mine yesterday 13th June 23 and I'm having trouble with the lego games or at least the two I've tried. One being "The Incredibles" and the other being "Star Wars The Skywalker Saga". They are very unplayable at the moment, yet work on the deck. Any ideas? Thanks 🙂

Question..I bought my ally 512gb from Best Buy and wanna buy the 2tb. I’m wondering the cloud recovery, do I need to do anything prior to restoring or is it already setup? Meaning do I need to do a backup first then restore?

Question : before you start switching on you new Rog Ally , can you first change SSD and than start setting up you Rog Ally, Bios, recovery and windows ? or First you have to set up Windows and update Bios, and than change you SSD disk ?

Do I need to boot the factory ssd first to activate the device with Windows or can I stick my 2tb in for the first boot and recovery will activate a license? If I can avoid a pointless Windows setup it would be nice. 😅
