Loosing Microsoft bloatware is the number one reason I love the Steam Deck. Valve has ASUS beat in software development by a LOOOOOOOONG shot, and no offense, but I'm more impressed with Valve hardware than ASUS atm. Go play Half Life Alyx on a Valve Index and you will see exactly what I mean. (ASUS has no answer for Valve's VR innovations) Anyone playing with, modding, or repairing Valve engineered hardware knows how good they try to make the experience. I also run a VR gaming lab so the Steam Deck is never plugged in during use for me. I have plenty of desktops for that, It's always a handheld, and outlasts the ALLY every time.

This review sounds like it’s coming from a prospective of someone who doesn’t use handheld pcs much thus the focus on the negatives or perceived negatives. The price was the prim example. The expectation that the plastic would be betting in a 700 dollar handheld pc. I for one hopes this becomes a reality but in a world where windows devices like this typically cost 1000+ I don’t see that happening soon. Good review but for people who maybe expecting a console experience. If you are used to handheld pcs I would check Linus review or the fox.

I fully admit that as a overall console experience steam deck is still better. But once you are actually in game this device blows the steam deck out the water and that's all that matters to me.

I tried Steam Deck (the original one, pre-ordered it, and waited a year). Return it 3 days later. Bought a Legion Go after weeks of watching the video and thought this was the one. Return it 3 days later after 2 days of installing stuff and hated the feel controller. Ended up buying the Rog Ally. Only had 2 days so far but after 3hrs of setting up which is I spent more gaming hours compared to the time when I had both SD and LegGo combined. Ally is the quietest, lightest, most high-quality feeling in hands, the best speaker one out of the three gaming machines. One of my games didn't run on LegGo but well for Ally for some reason which I thought they both basically have the same specs. And well for SD, love Steam OS console-likeness but hated that I couldn't play some of my games bc Steam OS.

Seems like a you problem expecting a beefy gaming rig in a handheld form. I got this knowing not to expect to run games at high settings 60 to 120 fps on 1080p. 720p 30 fps and any where from low to a mix of medium/high depending on the game. Haven't had a single one of the issues you had. RDR2, Witcher 3, Assassins Creed Valhalla, Diablo 4, GTAV, Resident Evil 2, 3 remake, 7, Village and many others have all run well. Capped tdp at 15w with a custom fan curve and disabled cpu turbo boost and the temps never even touch 60 degrees. The only 2 games I have had frame rate issues with is Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga and Hellblade. Upped the tdp to 18w and no problem. A little hotter in the 60s, but runs great.

I think this ROG Ally is amazing value. It replaced my whole desktop. I plug it into a USBC hub and it drives my 3 monitors, LAN, keyboard, mouse, storage flash drives, microphone, camera, game controller. AND I can play games on it on its own and coat pocket it going to a friends or partners house and can quickly plug into their USBC hub peripherals and have my desktop pc on hand. This use case cares less about your battery complaints and LOVES the fact that its full Windows 11 and has all the windows 11 updates and features. I don't want ASUS to put more "game launcher" bloatware on it than needed. Its perfect for 700$ CAD on black friday sale when i got it. I've not seen anything comparably good at that price that does all this. I've recommended it to a lot of friends.

Hi, I think Ally is much better than Steam Deck for AAA games. You need more time to to do customization for ROG Ally but it works much better after that. I can play at 1080p Hirizon Zero Dawn with 50 fps, also for Street Fighter 6 and Elden Ring. I am very Happy with that. The battery of Steam deck is better but it is not last long like 30 minutes more but the steam deck takes much more longer time to recharge it. I think that power bank is necessary for these device. Windows 11 can give you a lot of customization but if you are not computer user better don't take it. I have nintendo switch but i love my rog ally, it is the best device of this year. If i buy a laptop is not the same, because i travel a lot for work i have already a laptop with me and i can't take another laptop.

Im convinced that anyone who continually has software issues on the ally just isn’t built for PC gaming at all. The steam deck is great for the “console” feel, but to an avid PC gamer the ally is a dream. Typical windows issues and such are redundant when PC gaming is already your life. Unintuitive people seem to be the reason the ally is perceived as somehow complicated. Ive personally had the steam deck, OLED steam deck, and ally side by side. The first steamdeck hardly does anything better; sounds worse, games run worse, resolution worse. The only thing it does better is babysit non PC gamers by being more intuitive. The OLED does have a beautiful picture, but the sound is even worse than the first steamdeck somehow, and the performance boost is still a mile behind the ally. After having all 3, Ill only ever believe that either valve is paying people off to say the deck is better, or that people truly will trade off a massively more powerful machine because they cant learn to deal with windows; and those people most likely are the ones who buy an xbox/ps5 over a PC build. Understandable, but they really undermine the truly more powerful machine because they cant figure it out.

The main cause of the low battery life is that most people are using the full potential of the device and not limiting their framerate or TDP power. Also running their games at the maximum possible resolution and refreshrate ... Out of the box, Windows doesn't do a pretty good job when it comes to power saving, thats where SteamOS shines with its built-in fps limiter and TDP management sliders in the options menu.
