Astrophotography Siril stacking of the Crescent Nebula (and a very recent discovery).

Ғылым және технология

Processing time. Also a tad bit longer video than usual. I even had to cut it in two, so this will be part 1. We are going to process the Crescent Nebula in SHO palette from data shot over 3 short nights using my monochrome ASI2600MM Pro and the William Optics GT81.
You'll see me use Siril for stacking and pre-processing the three monochrome stacks of S, H and O.
In part 2 (video will be released a week after this) I'll remove the stars using Starnet++ and finalize it to a RGB image I'll explain my processing steps in Photoshop.
Actually the main "star of the show" is the so-called Soap Bubble nebula, which was only discovered in 2008! Details on the Soap Bubble nebula can be found on its wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap_Bu...

Hi there, thanks for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed watching this first part of the processing of this photo. In case you want to use Siril too, just head over to siril.org as it is just as free as the well known Deep Sky Stacker software, but with some added features. Next week I'll publish part 2 of this process where I will be detailing how I got from these stacks to a fully processed color image using Photoshop.

Great video Martin I've had Siril a while but we've only just started to mess around with it to see what it can do. Already looking forward to part 2 & what a great catch getting the soap bubble to. (I did check out my Crescent nebula picture but no joy for me lol)

Most photos I find online of the Crescent, have the Soap Bubble just outside the frame. This might contribute to the ‘late’ discovery date.

You’re welcome. There has been an update on Siril in the mean time. Autostretch might even get better results nowadays.

Very helpful tutorial. I have a MAC now and was looking for an alternative to DSS. Very timely video. I’ll definitely try it. Thanks for sharing your processing skills.

Thanks for this. SIRIL is a great piece of freeware and getting better all the time. A nice alternative for people like me who can't afford Pixinsight.

Indeed. It has become better even just after filming my video. Autostretch has a new improved algorithm.

You should still use darks. It will remove a lot of the noise I see in the final result. Darks are very easy to do. Much easier than flats are. Ill be watching your video more then once. I really do want to learn how to use Siril. This software is something I have been trying to learn how to use for two years now. Your video is the first I have seen with narrowband data.

    Agree. But I was/am lazy 😅 I referred to it as a “sin” 😇

I have the asi2600mc-p and was told that darks were not needed. I still use 20 darks to be safe. I also use dark flats instead of bias. I am not sure how much of a difference it makes but I do not see any issues using them.

It is best to shoot darks indeed. I don't as I am just terribly lazy ;-)
