Astrophotography Editing Tutorial In Photoshop

Ғылым және технология

With this deep sky astrophotography editing tutorial I'm going to run you through the bread and butter tools you'll need to make wonderful pictures of space.
Get The File: bit.ly/NGC7000Tutorial
With this image, we'll process NGC 7000, the North America Nebula together. I chose this image for a couple reasons. One being that it's a nice bright nebula with a lot of details and faint areas. Another is that there are no super bright stars in the frame that would make processing that much harder.
With this tutorial you're going to learn:
- Level Adjustments
- Curves Adjustments
- Threshold Adjustment Layers
- Colour Range Selections
- Localised Adjustments
- Adjustment Layers
- Clipping Masks
- Star Reduction & Removal
- Selective Contrast Enhancement..
Sounds like a lot - but before it seems intimidating the best part is you're not even going to notice that you're learning these skills.
So get the data, get your editor and join me in processing the North American Nebula together! Be sure to upload to your social medias and to tag me in them, I want to see them!

Thanks for the video! One big thing you may know by now (since this video was uploaded in 2019) is when you apply a curves adjustment layer you really really REALLY need to set the type to "Luminosity". This way it will not affect color balance whatsoever. It will only affect the light. Also, for cropping, just press "c" and use the crop tool. You can even set it to not actually delete the pixels it crops in case you need to recover them and redo.

This is the tutorial I always wanted. As a PS user myself it's confirmed some aspects I know already and do well. More importantly it has shown me what I can do better. This has also added understanding to what I was doing but lacked the knowledge why...it just did it so was fine with it. Loving these videos you are producing....thank you

Hello Ruzeen, thank you very much for this tutorial, it was very useful! Thank you also for sharing your picture and for giving me the opportunity to work on really good data to test post-processing on it. Very beautiful picture, by the way! I would like to share with you a tip about minimizing the stars: when you do the "Minimum" filter, choose "Preserve - Roundness", on the drop down menu, instead of "Squareness". This will give you the opportunity to select a radius with decimals. Also, I noticed the "Preserve - Roundness" allows for more round shaped stars (the "Squareness" option turns the stars into diamonds, expecially if overdone). Thanks again and clear skies!

Thank you so much for this. I used my own photo but followed your work flow and it turned out waaaayyyyy better than if I had ever tried it on my own. As others have said, and coming from someone who taught for 30 years, you are a terrific teacher. Lots of explanations as to WHY you are doing something rather than just "Do it this way". Well done and I'm looking forward to more of your tutorials.

Ruzeen, hey bud., Twitter Follower here. Just a shout out that within 2 minutes you already taught me more about processing Astro than many other prominent videos. Thanks for explaining the histogram and what the "white mid and blackpoint" mean, and why you can squish in the sliders (since theres no data there anyway.) Just these subtle tips are great for Novices like me because it doesn't assume we know what this stuff means. Looking forward to processing my OWN DSO subs today with this new info !

  • @AstroFarsography
    @AstroFarsography4 жыл бұрын

It was noted that I should have cropped at the beginning as the black borders affect the histogram and black point. For this image I felt it unnecessary but it is definitely best practice to crop near the beginning before the first balance :)

Great tutorial. You have a good way of explaining things. I just followed along and got it looking pretty reasonable. My only issue is I use an unmodded DSLR and I am in a fairly light -polluted area. So whenever I try the first level adjustments, I pull out loads of vignetting and gradients. By the time I have got rid of these in APP (or PI or whatever) the image is really noisy, and after a couple of stretches the histogram is ruined. Any tips for getting better data?

I use the monthly subscription model, Photoshop CC and that's fine with Astrophotography. I've not looked into elements but I can foresee it having much of the needed tools. If you're after a free software or something else then have you looked at GIMP? I did this same tutorial but using GIMP also.

I'm rather new to Astrophotography but not in photography itself. I use Photoshop for over 10 years now and the question is why people in this kind of tutorials always use a stamp visible layer and do some adjustments on that layer. Isn't it better to do all the adjustments (destructive or not) and play with opacity? When exporting for the Web, you can save a nice JPEG, crop it a bit more without loosing all changes..

  • @alejandrix0377
