Astronauts waiting to return to Earth aboard Starliner amid thruster issues

The two astronauts who traveled to the International Space Station aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft say they're confident it can return them to Earth. Leaks and thruster failures marred the launch, and further technical issues have kept the crew in space longer than scheduled. CBS News space consultant Bill Harwood joins with a timeline for when they could come back to the ground.

The kind of simulations they’re doing now is what made NASA what it is today but Boeing should have handled this a long time ago. And that hurts me to say considering my dislike for Musk.

China uses space tech that works- they took a version of the Russian Soyuz and improved the design. The American government designs its program around enriching government contractors.

Anybody with half a brain would have known that vehicle was on fit for purpose. I blame Nasa for risking the lives of it's astronauts knowing damn well that ship was a mess. The Starlinier should have done several uncrewed flights to iron out all these problems before putting lives onboard...

SpaceX is a private company, not a government agency like NASA; there will be many legal hoops to jump through. If you want an immediate solution, NASA will have to rescue them.

According to NASA, the Starliner can bring them home. They just want to do as much testing as possible before that happens, since the soon-to-be-detached service module (source of the problem) will burn up in the atmosphere.

Just one more thing about this being perfectly normal because it is. Dragon frequently spendss a month to 2 months longer than it's supposed to on the space station because of helium leaks and thruster malfirings that they need to spend months figuring out. everyday occurrence.wink wink
