Astronaut Answers Space Questions From Twitter | Tech Support | WIRED

Ғылым және технология

Astronaut Mike Massimino answers the internet's burning questions about the far reaches of space. How do astronauts get leverage when screwing things in? After a long space flight, where does the poo go? Does NASA let astronauts get acclimated to space on their first space walk? Are space suits comfortable? How many languages do astronauts have to learn? Does space have a smell?

9:07 When I visited Johnson's Space Center near Houston astronaut (sorry can't remember the name) told something very interesting - we already have engines capable of flying to Mars in reasonable time, the problem is slowing down... They will never achieve 100% speed until they need to revert thrust to break. So... achieving speed is one thing and is fairly easy. Stopping near your target is something completely different and much more complicated.

"Where ur poopoo go?" Simply sublime. This question is so brilliant. It seems like something dima would have considered, turning over in her head, day after day. This is why we need more philosophers, fewer astronauts. If we can't answer the big questions like where astronaut poopoo goes, how are we going to solve the smaller problems like getting everybody to mars?

Thank you, Mike, for extending the service life of Hubble. To me, the Hubble servicing missions were the most important shuttle missions.

I love this man so much. When i was in 7th grade and part of my school's Lego Robotics team, the mission for that year was problems in space. We were researching osteoporosis (bone deterioration) in space and the long term effects of it. Along with programming the robot for the missions, we also had to create a research project and provide solid evidence. We were lucky to meet Jeff Bezos (i forgot why lmao) and we also reached out to Mike! He not only provided a small account but he sent us a lovely picture of him he generously autographed. Best guy. Uncle/grandpa vibes all the way :))

Yeah, he was great on TBBT. I didn't know he was an astronaut and thought he was just an actor he was so natural in his part. They had other guest scientists on the show that were so wooden it was obvious they had never acted. Except for Niel Degrasse Tyson, he was so natural and fabulous too.

I remember Astronaut Hadfield did an interview about some of his trips into space. He also reported a burnt smell, if I remember correctly he said something like burnt steak. Are there vaporized metals in ultra high atmospheric areas, or perhaps something that we are perceiving as a metallic odor? Outer space is teasing us with smells that we can't directly experience :(

That person asking about the leverage is mighty clever. I didn't even think about this one ever. Fun to think that while you're mounted to the space craft and screwing a bolt, you're not only turning the bolt, but also the thing you're mounted to and the thing you're putting the screw into, both relative to their masses. It's weird.
