Grew up in Bristol but for some reason I chose Villa as my team when I was about six in 1983 - everyone else supported Liverpool etc - I realised later I’d just missed the glory times and had to watch villas depressing demise through the 80s - there was a real sense of depression in the air at the ground when I first saw them in 86 when I was 10 or 11, the air of greatness hung over the club and the mystery and charm of the stadium was so intense an experience for me as a youngster. How I would have loved to be in that Holte end when it was terraces and Villa were on their way to the league title - what a time it must have been.x

When I was about 5 or 6 I learned to read. Often from milk cortons, but also from these pieces of paper that contained the 13 games that you could bet on the upcoming saturday. Betting on sports was totally state regulated in Sweden back then, and since swedish football wasn't on in the winter time, there were the horses or english football. The names of the teams were wonderfully exotic. Somehow we could often see "The game of the day" live on a saturday, when people in Britain only could see it later in the evening. Strange network deal. Anyhow, I learnt to love the fantastic names of these teams, like Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle, West Ham, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace... For some reason, Liverpool or Arsenal weren't tantalising enough. But the team name that grabbed me was Aston Villa. So cool. They werent in the first division back then, but as I learnt more about the club through the village library, and through some football magazine I persuaded "Sten i kiosken" to import, I became more involved. The following season; "Sten i kiosken" started selling football cards. Of course, I had collected WC 74 and 78, but now I could see the faces of Brian Little, John Deehan, Dennis Mortimer, my idols. I remember that Jimmy Rimmer still was representing Arsenal in that card deck.. Any how, that`s an example of how you can start to love a football club. I'm also very proud of the fact that Olof Mellberg from my swedish favourite club ,Degerfors, did so well in Aston Villa.

@@hockleyrebelDJ When I first saw this comment I said hang on a minute there were sure better players at the time in England. Keegan was better than Shaw that is a fact. Mariner was almost as good as Withe and maybe here you have a point. Channon used to play upfront and before that Latchford was prefered. Both good players but in 1980-82 era Withe was better. Morley was good, but at the time Peter Barnes was considered better Woodcoock would also play there. Swain could never get in as right-back as there was Neal at the time and Anderson as his reserve and in the late seventies there was also Cherry at Leeds all considered better by all. As for Cowans that was Hoddle's position. Mortimer's position in midfield was at first taken by Coppel and later by Wilkins and of course Bryan Robson all 3 quality world class players. However, all my research came into question when I saw the results of England in 1981 when this Villa team was at its best. In 1981 England only won two matches both against Hungary. In 1981 England lost against Spain (Wembley), Brazil (Wembley), Scotland (Wembley), Norway (Oslo) and Switzerland (Basle). They drew with Romania (Wembley) and Wales (Wembley). Considering these results all my previous analysis seems futile and it begs the question how Greenwood kept his job after such a bad patch of results. Maybe your analyis at least for the period 1981 seems to make a lot of sense. So congratulations for your comment and for making me change my mind. By the way I am a Liverpool fan and not a Villa fan, but what's right is right.

What a classy footballer Tony Morley was! Stupid Ron Greenwood took him to the World Cup in Spain and didn't play him for even a minute. I remember as recently as the last match against Spain in the second stage group, he only brought on Keegan and Brooking with 17 minutes to go./Their only appearance during England's entire participation/. In my opinion, with any other coach, England would easily have played in the final, and why not win the cup, despite Italy's up-tempo team.

Villa were treated like shit by Greenwood. Shaw, Mortimer, Morley, and Cowans all should have gone to Italy in the Euros and Spain in the World Cup - those 4 were a ready made team; much as everyone liked Trevor Francis, he was never a centre-forward; he was just an outside forward but he got the nod every time. So many of those Villa players should have been playing for England between 1980 and 1982. Greenwood's problem, however, was Hungary. He saw Honved in the 1950s as being the side which formed the great Hungary side of 1953 and from 1977 onwards felt that Liverpool were the team to do the same for his England team. Problem was that Liverpool's players were old and past it but 1980. Neal was a defensive liability, McDermott was good but stuttered after 1980 and Keegan was such a busy fucker that he cost England a goal in Italy in 1976 and a goal in Italy in 1980 for pissing about. In the end, we bumbled our way to the finals, and went out like a light when we got there. Meanwhile the League champions easily turn over the West Germans who get to the World Cup final. Shameful. By the way, I'm no Villa fan.

@@andymacfaul2852 He did it quite a few times. Away at Leicester I seem to recall. I was there. Happy days.
Superb..man watching this gives me so much nostalgia as the villa team that won the league and European Cup are my earliest memories as a villa fan and my childhood team..as a 7/8 year old boy I thought villa won everything 😀
My first ever season ticket, my first ever far away game (Liverpool L2-1) the 3-3 away at Middlesborough was my first (and last) ever police arrest (I couldn't see their goals because of the snow) and that Arsenal game was mad at the end, all aged 14. How footy has changed but the emotions for the fans doesnt. p.s. Thanks Božo Janković, R.I.P.
Great video! Well played for putting it together. Those were the best of times. Can we do the same, perhaps, with our current team? When the stars align....
thank you for uploading this mate, me & my dad have just watched it all way through... dad gripped throughout lol
Rimmer was a good keeper some of his saves were unreal

@@MrDaiseymay You might be right, but they did get Jennings, who Spurs definitely let go too early.
Mortimer, Morley, Shaw, Cowan, Evans, Withe....imagine what that would be worth today....? What a side, and Saunders at the heart of it. Proper men too.
What a team !!! Love my villa 🙏
Thanks for upload
Great memories, stood on the hill outside Villa park in the snow when we lost to Ipswich when they shut the gates with thousands still trying to get in. But we got ticket's for that day in North London. These player's will always be football gods in our eye's!
I would put a thousand likes! Ciao dall'italia ! VTID!
Villa followed Nottingham forest success and yes it was well deserved
Withe's wearing a cap from Joondalup in Australia, the same club former Rangers and Burnley winger Ted McMinn played for.

Carl Esq Hey my friend, so you are aware of all the changes going on. Most people are asleep to it.
refreshing season this was an both villa an ipswich were great. massive turnout at highbury where they were crowned.
Should bring this club logo back
aston villa 0 everton 2 that was the first villa game i went to (this brings a lot of memories back .. football was more like football back then
Best vid ever watched all
i remember being in the holte end ,a woman in a villa poncho "peter withe ,paying money for old rope !" five mins later he scores a 20 yarder
Brilliant team; Cowans was a fantastic player.
Under the playlist it states "12 unavailable videos are hidden". Were these taken down for copyright? Any chance that you have the original URL's for those videos? Even though they are taken down, the URL could be useful. Any ideas where I can get other season reviews?
arsenal got to qualify for europe by winning ,so they were pretty happy too ,it was a little fiesty (to say the least ) before the game
That old 1st division trophy is so much better looking than the tacky PL one.
Superb
71 years for get the league, but at least was worth.
Dennis Mortimer was a fantastic player and a better captain.
i was there ,in the clock end utv
Ready light thunder love 7
Europe Come on lads
Yippee aye ehhhh, yippee aye oh-ohhhhh - Holte Enders in the sky. VTID.
Aston villa could,EV easily have 6 or 7 players for england with 20 caps or more
Tractor boys were robbed beat Villa 3 times that season but ran out of steam very fortunate champions

Remember it well, We beat you 2.0 at Highbury, you won the league because Ipswich lost to Middlesbrough, you bought 16.000 to Arsenal. 👍👊
Stupidity at 14:47-14:51
Who's care?? Live in the past. Now there are shite.. One of the first founder English league. But now there are relegation team. Only people live near Birmingham support them. Others from outside none. This day it's not enough .look how man city buy 'invisible'fans from outside the Manchester. Still can't fully full the stadium.
