    They literally still sell some models with their own engine. But now they're phasing that out due to unbelievably incompetent strategic decisions which led them right into a dead end with that engine. They had to sink in so much money into the next gen of the Mercedes mass-produced ordinary V8 that they now can't invest into developing the V12 to keep it, and to keep their top-luxury status.

  • @enigmatwist6548

    @enigmatwist6548

    @@pistonburner6448 They blitzed huge sums of money on the Valkyrie with its complex suspension and bespoke hybrid engine. It looks like a fantastic car and everything but I can’t help but think it was a crying shame that they didn’t invest in the bread and butter models over their vanity project. They probably could have sorted their interiors and sat nav out ages ago and had enough left over for their own V8 or whatever. However to survive the ban on combustion cars they’ll need the support of third parties and I’d rather they partnered with AMG than Geely so I guess there is some logic to the arrangement. Plus the cost of buying engines from AMG is significantly cheaper than the ruinous cost of developing a new engine.

  • @pistonburner6448

    @pistonburner6448

    @@enigmatwist6548 Why on Earth would they want to have their own V8? They already have their own V12! They burned a lot of money on Valhalla, having to switch engines half way through, then they still had to spend a lot of money on that Mercedes V8 (which people will not pay as much money for). And they've wasted a lot of money on them overall, as they had to switch to the new version of the Merc V8s! That too is a lot of work...in addition to the vast sums they have to pay Merc for them. They could've updated the V12 instead, and gotten rid of the hugely expensive Mercedes relationship which they have to pay a lot for in general and in addition per car! Why pay *_your competitor_* for engines?! Why would anyone pay for V8 Aston Martins? They're WORSE than BMW's sedans in every measurable way! Finally basically all their competitors got rid of V12s and _that's_ when the 'geniuses' of Aston Martin decided to get rid of their V12: just when they would've had an almost totally unique selling point which others don't have!

DBX isn't the success it should be, multiple projects needed to be delayed and cancelled, basically all their product line is old and watered down (they even had to give up their signature and top-of-the-line V12s in the new DB12 model and use the cheap, mass-produced, totally ordinary Mercedes unit instead)... They just had to sell out a large proportion of themselves to China and hope the Chinese can save them! What could be better proof that they themselves know they're not going to end up doing well?! Selling out to China is always the ultimate sign of total failure (though Aston only sold part of itself so not total yet...), as that shows that even Western companies don't want to pay for you.
