ASSUCK - One of The Least Mentioned but Greatest Grind Bands Ever... and They Also Use an Umlaute!

When talking about great grind bands, Assuck is never mentioned. Recorded and Engineered by Scott Burns at the legendary Morrisound Studios and yet, Assuck is forgotten. ASSUCK IS GRIND! ASSUCK USES AN UMLAUTE!

The greatest grind band! One of my favorite shows ever was Assuck and Reversal of Man in a basement in Reno in 1998. They brought the house down. It sucks that Steve Heritage won't let any of that stuff be reissued. Release the tapes Steve!

Yeah man, I saw them in FL back in the day. I believe Combat Wounded Veteran was on the same show. Blastasfuk released a CD like 10 years ago that was a discography but Steve didn't approve it, so it's considered a boot now I think. I had a chance to buy it but it slipped my mind at the time. Anyways, they were so good!

Assuck was from St. Petersburg/Gulfport Florida, Steve worked at Morrisound with Scott and everything was recorded late at night there when they could get in when the studios were not booked, they really just consider themselves a hardcore band that played very fast. There will never be a reunion.

Assück rules! I finally got a CD copy of Discography, which is a compilation of every studio recording from 1989-1998. I wanted standalone copies of their two albums but as you stated, they go for crazy prices on Discogs...also nowhere to be found on Ebay, so I settled for Discography instead since it was the much cheaper option and offers everything. I love all of their work, with Misery Index being my favorite, and Anticapital being my second. I feel like this band's brand of grindcore tends to lean more towards deathgrind, since they have a strong death metal influence with their sound. Great review! Oh and fun fact: the band Misery Index got their name from Assück's 1997 album.

So glad you made this video giving them hype they deserve. When I watched the Slave to the Grind documentary I was disappointed that Assuck wasn’t even mentioned. I also feel like no one seems to talk about the unique style they incorporated. I’ve never heard another band play riffs that sound like Assuck, it would be cool to try and start a band that sounds like them. Truly a unique grind band that deserves to be more well known

I sold all of my vinyl before a move out of the country, assuck, discordance axis, locust, spazz, hellnation, etc - lots from this general era. I was surprised how much money some of this crazy shit fetched but also happy to realize people loved it all. Such a cool time for grindcore or noisy music to be honest. So many amazing live shows.

I've got their T-shirt by older brother. T-shirt itself ( Misery Index cover ) worn out to the bone, print is incerdibly good even though it's worn at least 5-10 years back. However, I wasn't meet with them once I've got T-shirt as a birthday present but way back in early 20s. Currently waiting for a re-issued Anticapital by one Europian records distro. I'll admit, the thing you've said about taking those CDs in grave with yourself, I'll definitly agree with that when it comes to incoming Anticapital LP and a T-shirt :D Band sounds.... just can't get enough of those tracks, truly a one of a kind discography.

Man i Love everything you said about them, especially the blend of assück‘s hyper, dissonant, deep, punkish metal grindcore with the thicc, bass heavy sound of the morrisound studio! It hast a very special atmosphere..claustrophobic at times where you feel every god damn growl in you body. I love that their sound, especially on misery index, has not one „happy note“ in it ( you know what i mean haha) it’s vicious, precise, raw, emotional, chaotic jet almost death metal territory.. i have the MI and the blindspot cover tattooed..so im with you with the „they coming with me when im dead“ haha!! Cheers from berlin !! :)

Awesome video. This is my favorite grind band. The musicianship and lyricism on misery index resonates with me on a tremendous level. Very influential stuff to say the least. Anticapital is also a great, landmark album too, but yeah the sound is kinda thin. I think it's partially due to the fact there's no bass on that record. I refuse to pay the ridiculously exorbitant prices for either release. The irony of that whole situation is laughable at best and somewhat sickening at worst. I also think the lack of accessibility (physically & digitally) to their material is also a huge contributor to why they're somewhat obsure/overlooked.

Agreed… absolutely essential stuff. The reseller market is ridiculous. Soon after I posted this there was a copy of Misery Index on ebay as a Buy it Now for $175! In a way I appreciate the fact that they’ve kept the catalog underground but it would be nice to see a good quality reissue of these grindcore gems. Thanks for the reply!

I mean, that would be the correct way to pronounce ü, but is that what they intended? They were teenagers in Florida in the late 80s. How would you pronounce the name Mötley Crüe or Motörhead? They did say that they were embarrassed by their name choice later on but it wouldn’t be worth changing, which makes me lean toward the “ass suck” pronunciation. But I’ve never heard anyone in Assück actually say the name, all the interviews I’ve seen where the name is mentioned are only in text. So, yeah I don’t honestly know how they intended that name to be pronounced when they came up with it in high school.

I have a well worn Assuck t-shirt from years ago that still fits me. I mean I've heard stories about the band members being dicks but I enjoy both of their full lengths and their demo material. they are without peer, finally bringing together the underground hardcore audiences with the death metal audiences that Napalm Death failed to do, with all due respect I love me some Napalm but Assuck truly stuck to their guns until the end.

I saw them in Tampa in 92. We always called them Ass suck like he does. When I saw them the crowd were all skate punks. I don't think people realize how they didn't take themselves too seriously. I always thought their sound was a bit of a piss take to be honest. They were awesome live. I think the show I saw at Blue Chair is online.
