    This was incredibly helpful. I have all this knowledge and know all the terms back words and forwards but having difficulty applying that to the test. This viedo really helped me to begin to identify what I need to look for in questions so that I can apply what I know. The questions seemed so vague before I saw how you dissected them and the answers.

    Hi, I am struggling with a practice question from this session (I purchased the online review and this video is embedded). The question is about assessing the effectiveness of a reading program. Why wouldn’t formative assessment be considered if it’s meant to drive one’s instruction? It seemed like a viable answer. If you are teaching a program, and you are not seeing results during your formative assessments, would you not change whether or not you continue with the same program?

    Hi Monica, when measuring outcomes, which is what you’re doing when you’re measuring the effectiveness of a program, you use summative assessments. Formative assessments are ongoing, informal and used to drive instruction. Formatives are really about students and how you can differentiate to meet individual needs. A program has to take into account all students. Ideally, you would use a pretest before starting the program or use current reading scores. Then you would use a summative when you’re done using the program to measure overall growth. You certainly formatively assess along the way, but the summative gives you outcome measures. Hope that clears things up for you. Have a great night!

    Hello, would exit slips or reflections be an example of a formative assessment?

    Yes, absolutely. Those are two very good examples of formative assessments. I did a video on exit slips. You can watch that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gK14qrxpcc_cj9Y.html Thanks for watching.

    Would SAT or the ACT be norm-reference or a criterion-references assessment?

  • @KathleenJasperEdD

    @KathleenJasperEdD

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question. They are sort of both. The ACT and SAT are aligned to standards and therefore are criterion-referenced. However, they are used to compare students' scores. Here is an excerpt from an ACT test document: While the ACT is designed and developed to be a curriculum-based achievement test focused on college readiness standards, students also want to know how their scores compare to those of other students. ACT therefore reports two types of norms that students can use to compare their performance: national norms and state norms. National norms are based on tenth-, eleventh-, and twelfth-grade students in the U.S. who have taken the ACT in the last three years, and state norms are based on the subset of this group from the student’s own state. These norms indicate the percentage of students in the particular group who scored at or below each score point on the ACT. However, the ACT is not developed on the basis of norms. Rather, norms simply summarize, after the fact, how a particular group of students performed on the test during the previous three years.
