Assembling a Low Cost Greenhouse - Quictent Tunnel Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In my search for a low-cost greehouse for my backyard gardens, I found the Quictent products and purchased a small (12'x7') tunnel for additional space for starting and growing my seedlings. This video follows my build and gives my general impressions of the greenhouse.

I grew up on a farm on the edge of the Nebraska sandhills. A cattle ranch that bears our family name, founded in the late 1800s by my ancestors, is still owned and worked by my cousin. Life events have put me in the suburbs of a major metropolitan area in middle America, where my wife and I have raised our two kids. It's in this environment that I work to make as sustainable a life as I can, converting much of our backyard to grow food, including a garden, fruit trees and bee hives.
I attempt to use natural methods, as much as is possible, in my gardening and beekeeping. I garden organically and continue to learn to work with the soil and the plants, without the use of chemical supplements, herbicides or pesticides, to improve our harvest. Our honey bees are sourced from local colonies through swarms, trap-outs and cut-outs, and are kept, using treatment-free, natural methods, in Layens horizontal hives.

I’m glad the Quictent is working for you. I purchased one on January 27. A month later we had 1 inch of snow and it collapsed. The company said they won’t warranty it because they’re not meant to be used in bad weather. After lots of emails and tearful phone calls to Walmart I was able to get a 60% refund. Never again will I do this!!!!

I'm surprised to hear that based on the customer service reviews I found. But that's good information to know. We'll see how well this works out for me.

@@SuburbanSodbuster I was shocked when the company told me that the Quictent greenhouse isn’t supposed to be used in bad weather. It’s not like you can take it down every time there’s bad weather on the forecast! What part of the world never has bad weather?? The 1 inch of snow we had totally mangled the metal frame.

@@alzang it's very surprising that 1 inch of snow would be enough to do that. We haven't had snow since I put mine up but it has withstood winds up to 34 mph (according to our home weather station). But if I have any serious issues I'll certainly report that.

Take the plastic off in the fall and bring it in it probably last for years

Thanks for the tutorial! We have been researching greenhouses and this looks like an excellent option. Is the bottom plastic secured and attached to the base?

The sides are a few inches longer than the poles, so if no base is used they could be weighted down with rocks. This lets them overlap the base some so I plan to staple them down. The doors aren't as long so there is a little gap at the bottom of the door on each end.

We just had our greenhouse kit delivered the other day. It’s an OutSunny, but suspect it’ll be similar.

Thanks! I bought one and definitely know from watching you that this is going to be a two person job for my short self! No way in this world! 😂 Are you heating it at all, and if so, how?

Apparently KZread put an advertisement (at least for some viewers) during the part where I was putting the cover on, because my sister asked me if the ad covered up the part where I was cursing. 😄 My neighbor was actually just off camera asking if I wanted help, but I wanted to see for myself, and put on camera, the possibility of putting the cover on alone. But I agree - even if you're not short - that having at least one helper would be beneficial. I don't have a heater in the greenhouse, except that I do have seedling heating mats. Mine is close enough to the house that I can run an extension cord. I waited until we got through a stretch of freezing temps to move tomatoes and peppers into the greenhouse, although I did put my cabbages in there earlier with the heating mat. Although it's how a greenhouse is supposed to work, I was still surprised at how quickly it heats up inside once the sun is up.

@@SuburbanSodbuster thanks so much for getting back to me! I'm in Tennessee, and our weather has been so unpredictable. It's been awful. We're going to do a few black barrels of water to create a heat sink in mine. KZread is ridiculous. That is hilarious, and would have made me feel much more human... I am absolutely the type to cuss my little heart out when I'm trying to get something done that I'm just a few inches too short to manage on my own. 😂

So how long did the greenhouse survive?
