Assam: My Country, My Home | 101 East

In India’s Assam state, 1.9 million people are facing a battle to prove they belong.
They are suspected to be foreigners after the state created a National Register of Citizens, demanding that anyone not on the list prove their citizenship.
Most of those fighting to prove their citizenship are Muslim, prompting claims that authorities are falsely branding them illegal migrants from Bangladesh in an attempt to appeal to hardline Hindus.
Many now live in fear that they could be deported or sent to detention centres and made stateless.
101 East investigates their desperate quest to prove who they really are.

I do agree there are some politicians who like to stir up the Hindu-Muslim discrimination to gain popular vote and that is sick. But the problem inside the North Eastern states of India like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and even West Bengal is not against any religion. It is a battle between the indigenous population vs. the foreigners such as Bangladeshi. It was seen evidently within the North Eastern states during the CAA(Citizen Amendment Act, 2019) protests. The protest in these regions were against the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who come (still coming) to these states by jumping/cutting the border fences. You may be Hindu, Muslim, Christian or whatever it be, you are unwanted here. So, don't give it a religious tone. Certain areas in these parts have seen significant demographic change, where the native populations are outnumber by these illegal immigrants. Some have stayed long enough that they have forged govt. documents and have entered govt. services. Yes, it cannot be denied that there may be cases of genuine Indians being charged as Bangladeshi. If you really want to do genuine reporting, you should show the stories of both sides and stop playing mercy journalism. Did you know, while the rest of India was opposing the CAA-2019, because of its favoritism to grant citizenship to certain religions excluding Muslim, the story of protest in entirety of North Eastern States were only against Bangladeshis, be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian, etc., they are not welcomed here. I feel like I am a better journalist than you.

How can you say he is not 'legal'? These are the innocent citizens of India that are being affected, all due to the rise of Hindu nationalism, spread by propaganda of the current government

@fascinating yeehaw I admit that I need to know more on the specifics in Assam, and will be doing my research. But my question is, why do people, like the former Indian army officer in this video, have to be treated in the way they are? When clearly he has lived there since before Independence? The only link I can think of logically, is because he is a Muslim, and a minority. And that is happening in many other parts of India too, as per my knowledge and research! The question is about human rights, morality and ethics, why should we treat our fellow human beings in such a way that they should be demeaned, abused and treated as 2nd class citizens? In my personal opinion (formed from from what I have seen, read, researched, through multiple sources, heard about from people that have been affected and in the region) is that this is being propagated by the current party in power. Just one example is the 'politician' in this video, part of the current ruling govt. It is clear as day light, that he is against the muslim minorities from his words. Look at the clear hate speeches of another BJP member, Yogi Adityanath of UP.

I am from Assam- we have observed the NRC process- as a citizen you don't have to carry 1971 documents (Unless you have them). There are already records with the government about our ancestral legacy. As per a recent survey - 90% of workers in India are in the informal sector means (that means Chailwala, Carpenter, Labour, etc). So there are enough facilities to take care of such people. On the other hand, If the situation was as grim as you are mentioning, then, that only 20% would have managed to be on the list, the rest were all declared as Illegal migrant. But's that not the case, there are few errors, and the government has provided ample support. As per the sixth schedule of the constitution the people of North East India have autonomy to preserve their culture and as per Assam Accord government is bound to counter illegal immigration. Suggestion from a Bengali, who was born in Assam and grew up there. It hurts me to see Assam and Northeast suffer in development then rest of India. Here below , what I have to say. It is an unfortunate thing in India, Indians are declaring another Indian as foreigner, 73 years after independence (1947) and as well 50 years after the birth of Bangladesh (1971). Where does this end? . Next, I think they will turn on whoever wants to have beef delicacies. But funny enough, those who propagate this hate theory and Assam NRC list are fine with their generational history of migration from distant land. The history and pain of partition our parents and grandparents endured in eastern India, is getting re-lived by their sons and daughters, who were born in Indian soil. And the other moot point, even when you declare someone stateless, none of the neighboring countries and states are going to accept them. These forcible conversion of statelessness of a mass citizen group will create another sets of problems, in a state where Violence and Agitation have gone too long with changing hands of political fortune and mainly unfettered corruption. Now, I am sure, you know about the cost projection and expense of both the Mega Detention center in Goalpara district, Assam and also the cost incurred in creation and now a call for revision of the Assam NRC list. It is a work of never ending un-productiveness at tax payers cost and filling the pockets of vested politicians and their friends & families, both in kind and keeping an hold on the political power grab. What can be your New Years 2021 Resolution, if you are from NorthEast India. Ask, Request & Demand Converting the Mega Deportation Center in Assam (Goalpara district) still under construction. Request and Demand that the project be converted to a Technological University. For Training of farmers, Small traders, Training of vocational profession. Defining Standards in building materials. Training Computer Technicians, Medical Laboratory Technicians,Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Ironsmith and even Earthen ware makers and Ceramic makers. Encourage developing skilled labour force. Include Training of artisans that help to keep the heritage of Assam and the Northeastern states and that will help the local cottage industry and assist tourism in the state and neighbouring areas. That Technological center can be a resource for all the Northeastern States, in much needed way for job creation and economic progress. Best regards, Wish you a peaceful Assam and a very Happy New year 2021. Nilotpal Bhattacharyya I was born and also grew up in Assam. @@complexitytr9098 I hope you are not one of those " BJP IT "Shells" " . Because of the persona you are using. In Assam "Nellie Massacre " happened in 1983. In Assam every election cycle, threat and intimidation happens to the minority. I have first hand experience , experienced that while growing up in Assam. People in Goalpara Detention camp has died waiting trials. Their families have lost earning members and head of the household. This NRC list constructed is now again under revision. No neighbouring countries will accept these Indian citizens , who are forcibly and via official trickery being made stateless. Here is book excerpts quote of the Nellie Massacre. Author and book title info ============= The Nellie Massacre of 1983: Agency of Rioters Book by Makiko Kimura === ISBN-13: 978-8132111665, ISBN-10: 8132111664 ===== Start of Quote from that book """ The Nellie Massacre of 1983 The Nellie incident, involving the massacre of about 2,000 Muslim villagers, took place during the antiforeigner movement in Assam, in order to drive out illegal Bangladeshi and Nepali immigrants. Unlike the communal “riots” in the other parts of India from the 1980s to 2000s, this was an incident which took place in rural areas. The attackers were part of the indigenous tribal population, and Assamese Hindus of lower strata. The Nellie Massacre of 1983 is an attempt to search for clues from the narratives of attackers and survivors of the incident, which are fragmented and sometimes contradictory to each other. The key focus of the book is on the local decision-making processes of the riot agents in deciding to use collective violence against another group/community/ethnicity especially in the context of rural India. By using the case study of the Nellie massacre, the author attempts to argue that rioters have their own agency and decision-making power, and were not mere puppets of ideology and structural causes. Instead, they interpreted the circumstances in their own way and decided to riot."""" End of Quote

What's wrong in questioning a person's citizenship if he or she is a doubtful one, whether Hindu or Muslim?

@@ishankaushik The wrong is that -- The question only asked to Bengali speakers and also to be precise, Both Muslim Bengalis and Hindu Bengalis. The same question is not asked to Assamese speakers and various other speakers of different dialects and languages in Lower and Upper Assam. There are a plethora of different linguistic and ethnicity in both plain and hill tribes , in existence in North East. The onus to prove Citizenship on one particular selective group in a governmental procedure, is faulty, inhuman and just a legal intimidation and threat by govt. There is plenty such examples. At a personal level , my own Aunt is not in the NRC list. So, she would be deported or would become stateless. For the resourceful , they will find a way to get the proper document. And for that unfortunate poor peasants or families, it is impossible dream. They will spend their money and resource and fail to prove their Citizenship. If you ask a poor genuine assamese or a hill or plain tribes from Assam , he will also fail to produce a document to prove his Citizenship. Feb 1st 2021 Nilotpal Bhattacharyya
