My family hates our 3 month old Aspin because they said that "Askals/Aspins are ugly and unimportant" and that "you should put it in the streets and stop caring about it." But I told them Aspins are the same as the other dog breeds. We should be proud we have our own dog breed here in the Philippines and that we should care for them like how other countries treat their own dog breeds.

Although I agree that the word "aspin" has helped change the negative perception of most Filipinos towards their own native dogs, I still proudly call my 13-year old boy "askal". He has all the traits of an askal: strong, street-smart, independent, resilient, and disease-free. He's outlived all the "pedigrees" in our area. Askals can be very stubborn in training as they are very independent but with a loving home, proper training and exercise, these dogs are pretty much maintenance-free unlike their foreign counterparts. I really do not understand how a lot of Filipinos consider their native dogs of lesser value. Look, dogs won't make you look good. Go to the gym or fix your teeth instead. Dogs.are.not.a.symbol.of.wealth. Your Huskies and Chihuahua won't elevate your social status! On another note, askals are not only a cross of different breeds. They are related to the New Guinea Singing Dog and the Dingos. You can see the resemblance of the New Gunieas with the native dogs you see in provinces. You should really be proud of your own breed and do more scientific research. It's 2016, demand your politicians and your local vet to do genetic studies. Aren't you guys curious where your native species came from or where you as a people originated from?!?

I prefer aspins than foreign dogs but i still own a chihuahua. Aspin are great companion dogs. Whenever you arrive home they know that you are coming. When the whole family go out they would stare at the gate and gawk and wait until you arrive. Lost my aspin last august 8 my whole family misses him. We will always remember he has a cat for a friend if ever i bring home a new cat he would be so friendly and you can see him taking care of the cat.

We adopted an aspin. Puppy pa lang siya pero ang payat dahil di pinapakain sa kanila. Buti nalang napunta siya sa amin. Ngayon masigla na siya. We named her Cookie.

I find it quite unique, funny and somewhat amazing that Aspins are the only breed (if it is considered a breed) that doesn't have a generic or identifiable look unlike other dog breeds. It's like each of them are descendants of a different dog breed from around the world but is only classified as one. Kinda cool if you think about it. And for that I'm proud of the Aspins. Hopefully they'll all find their forever homes someday.

Aspin's are good house pets i guarantee that. . At depende yan sa pag aalaga sakanila. . i have 3 of these lovely pets. . 1 of them are crossbreed of Xolo. . hairless breed. . Napaka friendly nila and quite easy turuan ng tricks. . Loyal and very playful. . Comapred to pure breeds wala din sila pinag kaiba. . Sa maintenance same lang din. . Nasa pag handle lang talaga kase kung pababayaan mo sya talagang magiging asong kalye sya. . Pero kung maayos ang pag handle sa breed na ito hindi ka bibigyan ng sakit ng ulo. . Karamihan kase sating mga pinoy pag nag karoon ng asong aspin. . Kadalasan tinatali lang sa bahay. . pakakainin lang. . Pero kung mamaintain lang ng owner yung exercise. discipline at affection etong mga asong ito ay pwedeng maging good companion same with pure breeds.

In my opinion Aspin dogs also represent the Filipino people. Just like Corgi dog represents the British people. I'm not saying in a ridiculous way ah. Aspins should be treated like any other breeds kase pansin ko pag Aspin ginagawang katawa tawa ng ibang Pilipino parang ang labas sakin parang pinagtatawanan mo yung sarili mo. Kase ang mindset ng ibang Pinoy pag foreign breed ang aso sosyal, pang mayaman. Nakakainis isipin yun. Sana naman bigyang pansin yung mga Aspin kase if they had the chance to be treated very well like foreign breeds mas makikilala yung mga Aspins bilang well known na dog type. Aspins have the strongest immune system, matalino pag naturuan, atsaka friendly and loyal. Makikita mo rin ang disiplina ng isang bansa pag nakakita ka ng Stray dogs sa kalye ang ganda parin tignan like sa Thailand. Sa Philippines pag may stray dogs makikita mo nakaka awa tignan kase wala man lang nagmamalasakit. Just bursting my opinion. Hahaha.

I agree, all dogs are loyal and smart whether it be aspin or pure breed. Sana dito sa Pilipinas ay matuto tayong mahalin ang mga alaga nating aso mapa pure breed man yan o aspin. Wala sa breed ang paguugali ng aso kundi nasa taong nagaalaga nito.

I believe what makes Aspins really cool, like Filipino people, is their versatility. 💕💕💕

we have 4 dogs. 2 aspin and 2 foreign breed. they love each other kht magkakaiba sila ng breeds and sizes. ung mga aspin ang hindi umaalis sa tabi ko . tatayo ako tatayo dn sila at pag nagstay ako sa isang place nandun lng sila sa tabi ko. :)

You can find pure Aspins when you go to the provinces. The Aspins in our province near the mountains all have the same traits: medium size dogs with prick ears, curled tails and short hair. These dogs in my opinion is not mixed with other breeds kasi di uso ang may lahi samin.

Yes, that's what I noticed too. I just hope people stop crossing these beautiful native askals with foreign breeds. I have owned several askals since the 90's and I can say they are healthier than their foreign counterparts. They rarely suffer from genetic disease unlike say, German Shepherds born with hip dysplasia. Just give these dogs a proper and home (preferable indoor) and the will outlive all the other "prized" foreign dogs in your neighborhood. :)

Unlike show dogs that follow a certain standard and are bred to be "beautiful", disregarding their original use, Aspins, or as we call it Native Dogs, are bred freely and naturally making them healthy. You can also see native breeds being used by some tribes like the Aetas for hunting. All of them have similar traits: short hair, pricked ears, curled tails, and with the will to guard the tribesman's house and family.

Niels Eric Calasin Exactly mate. They're amazing as alert dogs but I didn't know they could also hunt. That must explain why my 13-year old used to bring home rodents I didn't known existed in my backyard lol. They are difficult to break, probably because they are very independent and are not affection-driven, but who knows what these guys can do with professional training. What I wish for these dogs is to have proper homes, not in SM parking, not chained up in the front yard with no water bowls to boot, while their cute little Shin Tzu and Chow Chow brother stay in an airconditioned room with their pet parents. And man, I hate how a lot of Filipino vets discriminate native dogs. It happened to me so many times I've lost count. Also, pet parents, when your aspin-askals are sick, get them to your local vet, asap. There are those who charge free for indigents, you just have to look it up. Don't just wait them to die.

Your comments are well appreciated. I can say from my own experience with native breeds in India, that they are the best suited to our local climatic and other conditions. I will be residing in the Philippines in the days to come, and would surely love to raise pure native breeds of dogs, cats, pigs, and other animals and poultry as well. Am happy to know a lots of research and development has taken place in this area in the Phils, and am very excited about it.

I actually have three aspins myself and I honestly don’t care if my pets are aspins or not, yet some filipinos tend to misunderstand them as horrible pets whereas if you get a purebreed dog that’s when they actually care for them. In the end, they’re still dogs that you’ll care for till they pass away

Kung lahat ng dog lovers ganun, hindi na dadami ang mga aso na walang pamilya sa mga shelter at kalsada.

What i like about Aspin is that they are well adapted to our climate, less maintenance pa. Basta alagaan mo lang ng ligo with dog shampoo at vitamins at complete vaccine ok na ok sya. They can even outlive other pure breeds basta wag papakainin ng tirang pagkain,, dog food or chemical-free cooked meat is enough.

Aspin ko rat killer...at 11 years n sken yung aspin ko...madami n sya naging anak almost 50 plus n pinamimigay ko yung mga puppy nya ngayun nga my anak ulit 2...

Yung aspin namin mukhang siberian husky. Mukhang wolf daw sabi mga tao. Matalino, malambing, mabait at may manners. Madaling turuan kaso medyo hambog lahat ng tricks na tinuro namin sa kanya gagawin nia pag nakakita ng treats ng wala pang command. Sa anak kong 10 years old lang sya nakikinig. Sya nagturo lahat ng tricks sa kanya. Hindi umiihi at tumatae sa bahay at sa gilid sya lagi umiihi at tumatae basta may lupa syang naaamoy. Pag kumakain kami nanonood lang sya. Pag di mo sya pinapansin lalapitan ka nia at lalamugin ng halik. Pag yakap ko anak ko nakikisali rin sya. Tuwing pag gising namin or pagbalik ng bahay nagsstretching sya para batiin kami. Pag may humihingi ng tulong magpupumiglas sya sa tatay ko para tulungan yung humihingi ng tulong. At di rin sya nagpapaagrabyado pag pinagttrippan sya kasi kakagatin ka nia pero di naman masakit para lang hindi mo sya pagtrippan ng pagtrippan.

It's about time na palitan na nga ang tawag sa aso natin sa Pilipinas. May stigma kasi kapag askal ang tawag kahit maganda naman breed nila.

My aspin have the same coloration a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog but his mother is an askal and his dad is unknown. ..Could it be possible that he' a crossbreed?

Aspin basta mahal mo dika pababayaan. May alaga akong ganyan yung mas pipiliin ko pa magaalaga ng ganyan kesa sa ibang breed. Hindi lahat ng aspin nagmimisbehave Oo lahat halos sa aspin matapang syempre gusto niya kayo ipagtanggol sa iba proprotektahan ka. Yung kahit pagod na siya ipapakita niya patin sayo na kaya niya. Minsan may time na nasa labas lang natutulog alaga ko pero diko siya hinahayaan maulanan magkasakit at gisto ko komportable siya sa tinitulugan niya minsan mapapansin ko rin na gusto niya sa loob ng bahay niyo para makapag pahinga ng ayos.Yung may time na umalis kami nakadungaw siya dun sa gate hangang pagbalik namin nasa malayo palang kami nakikita na namin siyang nagiintay yung pagkakita niya sauo sasalubungin ka ng yakap ansarap lang sa pakiramdam😇

Yung punta ka ng bundok kahit mabasa sa ulan.. ang aspin sasama at sasama pa rin. Kahit pauwiin muna sya.. at yung pag tingin mo sa likuran mo wla na. Peru nung nakarating kna sa paparuunan mo ay andun din sya. Palihim na nkasunod yung aspin

Ganyan ang aso namin ASPIN Pero tinuturing namin pamilya at minamahal namin at hindi tinuturing na iba unlike other na ang turing lang nila is parang wala lang o basta bantay lang. May puso at isip din ang aspin. mapagmahal at loyal tulad ng ibang aso. kaya dapat pantay lang turing sa kanila. tsaka tulad ng sinabi mo di naman lahat ng aspin eh ay nasa kalye at irresponsable ang may ari ... kami kasi di namin pinapalabas yung aspin namin kasi mahal na mahal namin yun baka kasi mabangga or may mantrip nalang bigla . pinapaliguan namin siya palagi pero hindi araw araw kasi magkakasipon . . mahal na mahal namin aso naming aspin.

in my opinion.. aspins are economically better to own than any breed..why? aspins are highly adaptable...social dogs...resilient to modern sickness....😊

Kagaya ng Pilipino, mixed na rin ang mga aspin.. Dahil sa kolonyalismo.
