GRRM is almost certainly well versed in comparative mythology. I'm pretty sure he's read the work of George Dumezil for instance. The wiki article on him is terrible, as usual, but I guess it's a starting point: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Dumézil In short, Dumezil"s main idea was that there was a common thread in most Indo-European myths, that thread being the trifunctional structure of Indo-European societies: king - priest - warrior. It's interesting to note that the warrior class is almost always represented by two distinct types of warriors: the clever one and the strong one, like Athena and Ares for instance, or Arjuna and Bhima in the Mahabharata (Bhima, the strong one, is the son of the god of the wind btw). Maybe we should look for two different types of warriors in asoiaf... Asoiaf is clearly, among other things, an essay on comparative mythology - well, fictional mythology of course.

So AA was a Smith and a Warrior, he was also a husband but the text never tells if he was a Father too. If he was then he would cover the three aspects of the Faith, as he slayed NN though he could be the Stranger, or maybe the LB is the Stranger? And NN herself, could we see her as a Just Maid, Gentle Mother and the Crone that turned her back to the Earth? Titan of the Braavos would be the Last Hero actually, searching for the Children leaving in the rainy lagoon of Braavos though he would be Merling King before his transformation. Last Hero himself is also tied to Night's King and Bael the Bard.

Sooo good! So good! So *secures tinfoil space helmet* I’m wondering why GRRM chose the name “Titan” for the Titan of Braavos over say, colossus, Goliath, giant, etc. The reference to the titans of Greek myth seems clear now, but do you think he might also be alluding to Titan, the icy, covered in cloud (kinda like Braavos) moon of Saturn?

I can't help but notice that Mother of Pearl is the Grey King's stone like the Pearl Emperor who ruled after the God on Earth. Also, he may be an ancestor of the Starks with his Grey eyes and solemn disposition. Starks also have a habit of coming back from the dead, otherwise they wouldn't need to place swords over their sarcophagi to keep them in. Rob will be back to avenge Jane and his own death. What if a Fisher Queen saved the Grey King's/Pearl Emperor's life by giving him the kiss of life?

The Titan of Bravos i think is inspired by the Ancient mythological statue of the Sun in the Isle of Rhodes in the Aegean sea ..The peoples in the island in the Ancient times they worshiped as their god and protector the Sun[Apollo in the Greek Mythology was the God of the Sun]..They build in him a massive giant statue in their port ..According to Archimedes and to Pythagoras this statue was 30-40 meters high and was stand in two bases in his feet so the ships that pass beneath to pass among the bases where the statue was supported ..Was described as wearing a crown who look like with the sun and colored ..It was one of the 7 wonders of the world along with the statue of Zeus in Olympia [was also massive] and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus ..You should to do a video in the Greek Mythology linked to ASOIAF ..There are many references.

Old Nan's story of The Last Hero says that his sword froze and shattered. At Castle Black, Sam reads that he wielded a dragon steel one. My hunch is that it was either the original [pre-Valyrian ] Ice or Dawn. I also notice that the words Dawn, Dayne, Daenerys and Dorne sound a *lot* alike. What do you think?

LmL has some ideas about the original lightbringer being dawn. Many good points were made in this essay of his, highly recommended lucifermeanslightbringer.com/2016/03/15/dawn-of-the-others/ . The audio is available on his youtube channel and his podcast. Ultimately I think dawn being the original Lightbringer is a great theory. Although I am quite curious why dawn ended up all the way down in Dorne if it was so instrumental in fighting the others. You would think tradition would keep this sword as close as possible to the wall rather it seems the opposite.

Another thought provoking video. As I’m sure your already aware the “Seconds Sons “ banner is a broken sword. Would Brienne fit the Azor Ahia template, her brother Andrew is dead. She becomes a warrior, traditionally a male role. Then wanders Westeros with Oathkeeper , a sword broken then re-forged. As to Bealish , my theory is he is a Plumm. Wears purple and gold , grandfather a sellsword like Brown Ben. A plum hides a stone beneath, then there is the legend of the Plumms manhood and he’s nickname is Littlefinger. Seems to fit Grrms sense of humour.

Hey @Thunder Clap! Yes, I mentioned the broken sword sigil of the second sons in my Livestream! There are times were Brienne plays the role of Nissa Nissa as well such as in the bath with Jaime when Jaime passes out and also we have our 5 year gap Brienne who is named pretty Merris. Not sure about Littlefinger being a plumm, but really anything is possible in this series so you never know. I have some more thoughts on littlefinger I plan on sharing in a video one of these days.

In our story that otherwordly wisdom is linked to the weirwood net given that it appears with green seer warg symbolism

I just read the comments below. Fabulous! The heroic monomyth is the Indo European one +++, and somehow it all has to work with the conflict between the elemental magic forces. I count four, so far - Fire, Ice, Earth and Water, in GRRM's world. They are all currently out of balance, and there is (another) brewing battle between Fire and Ice. Will a fifth element be added to the mix of the main series to break the deadlock? I think so, this might be where George jumps to a more Eastern/Far Easteros/Asian five element symbol system.

Argoth Stone-Skin. Argos Sevenstar. The Grey King's Hall had a starfish-shaped table. Maris might mean Marish, as in marsh. Fisher Queens with their floating palace on the Silver Sea. Silver Sea, Grey water. Greywater Watch, a floating castle. Fisher Queen, or Frog Eaters? Ancestors of the tall men, who were giants, or just tall in the eyes of small people? Hugor, Uthor. Fourty-four strong sons wearing Iron plate, fourty-four stones on Nagga's Hill. Hightower's sigil is a white tower with red flames, and the original tower was made of timber. Sounds like a weirwood? And the Grey King's ship was made of Ygg the demon tree, was it made of the original Hightower? Was the original Hightower actually a weirwood itself? Argoth Stoneskin, is really Argoth "armored in metal from head to toes"; the emergence of knights in Westeros, which did not come from Essos. It's why the story of Argoth is tied to the first tourney, it is a historic retelling of the emergence of knighthood and medieval society in Westeros.

In a broad sense... yes. Although i do think the magic associated with both ice and fire may be derived from the same or similat sources and grrm has alluded in the past to gods not being actual real dieties who will manifest. I feel historical events influenced religion in the same way they influenced the drowned god religion. So with the lord of light and the great other we have similar opposing forces so i think the possibility is likely they may relate back to the battling brothers.

Basically it does not mean that he is Azor Ahai if that is something that was on your mind, not what I am referring to, but instead rather I am to the symbolism surrounding the character. It will also inform you about the character of Azor Ahai which was the main concept with the mockingbird...probably not that great and moral of a character.

  • @TheDisputedLands

This is going to be your tyr, nodens, fisher king symbol. The idea of the maimed hand fits within this collection. The cripples bastards and broken things is a huge theme within the asoiaf world, when i look at the brother dichotomy, it seems clear to me that the younger of the two served as a "hand" figure or a second in command. This younger brother was also probably maimed or disfigured in some sort of way. This is why victarion has a burned hand, why davos is missing fingers, its why jon has a burned hand. Its why the "second sons" has a broken sword on their banner, it's why florian greysteel was the yonger brother of lord moontoon of maidenpool, its why the younger brother of house hunter will be killing his elder brother, its why jaime with his missing hand is probably the "valanqar" or "younger brother". Its why orys baratheon lost his hand ect.

But if you think of the sword as a metaphor for a person... like azor ahai rather than an actual sword then the maimed hand would also fit. Maybe the forging of lightbringer is a tale about a person rather than a weapon... that could make sense since the first forging was in water and we do see evidence of a hammer of the waters drowning of AA.

A monomyth is something where there is a phenomena of several different myths and legends that pertain to the same person or the same event just told by different cultural points of view. For example, the flood myth is a monomyth found in several cultures.
