How to find coal is to go to a mountain and you will have a chance of finding coal 75% chance from digging on top of stone.

HE BROKE RULE 1 OF MINECRAFT!

Great video with lots of tingles. For coal, instead I would throw some logs in the furnace. Can use sticks for fuel if needed. It will make charcoal. I sometimes do that in a new world before I find coal.
