A few more facts. It's named after the Dutch province of Zeeland by Dutch explorers. The parliament is known as the Beehive. As well as LOTR & Hobbit, the Narnia movies were filmed there too.

a maori folktail of new zealand: a man named maui went fishing - and he fished up a massive fish, but his greedy brothers all took chunks out of the fish for their own benefit - that fish is the north island and the fishing boat is the south.

Im from the US but i lived in New Zealand for a year during 6th grade it was a great experience. I lived in Manurewa which is a little south of Auckland.
