Ever wonder why pirates are often depicted wearing an eye patch? When pirates would board a target vessel the first order of business was to eliminate or subdue the occupants of the ship in question. The majority of the fighting took place on the ships deck during daylight hours. Once the ships deck was clear it was necessary to go below deck where they would likely encounter another wave of armed opposition. The transition from the bright mid day sunlight to the darkness below deck would leave the raiding pirates nearly blind for several minutes until their eyes adjusted to the extremely poorly lit conditions. Enter the eye patch- immediately upon going below deck a pirate would remove his patch to reveal an eye that due to having been shielded from the sun was already adjusted to the darkness and ready to see whatever threats might await him below deck.

@@grumpy9721 perhaps it's anecdotal. But I was given this tip for sure when cycling in the French Alps, where there can be long road tunnels. Basically the tip was that when you saw the tunnel sign - close one eye - then open it when you got into the tunnel. Meant you didn't have to take your sunglasses off and put them on again at the other end. It makes perfect sense to me.

Hello friends! I can clear this up for you. It has been demonstrated that it is scientifically possible to retain one’s night vision by covering or closing one eye. Pilots will even do this to retain their night vision while flying. However, there are no historical accounts that mention eyepatches being used in this way by pirates, or other seafaring combatants for that matter. There is also no archaeological evidence for the idea, and it is difficult to see how this hypothesis could be confirmed through archaeology in the first place. Thus, while it is plausible, the hypothesis may be untestable at this time. Another question is why marines of the period didn’t also wear eyepatches to protect their dark-adapted vision and improve their ability to engage in combat below deck. This would have enhanced their chances of success in taking an enemy ship. It seems that if pirates could come up with the idea, seasoned marines and naval officers could have thought of it as well. Therefore it is also plausible that it could have been to cover up an injury as well. My thoughts are the reasons vary but of course, I think your hypothesis is a valid one theoretically speaking.

I really enjoy these videos where you have various somewhat-related things on your table that you play with while you tell the story. (But really I enjoy every video you make, even in languages I don't really understand.)

Super Quality content as usual. And those are some pretty neat looking props you got their. I must admit that sometimes I come back to your videos to learn things I missed since I fell asleep. I did that a lot with your battleship video. Anyway thanks for helping me sleep and teaching me about pirates.

thanks! It looks like I'll make a video about Genghis Khan and the Mongols at the beginning of November, so if you find a book and can release a podcast a few days before, let me know and I will promote it as a teaser (could be about Marco Polo for example).

@@TheFrenchWhispererASMR Why, you've read my mind, since Marco Polo was one of the books I pulled as possibilities (the other being a Genghis Khan biography, but you'll be covering that already). I'll have episodes going out every Monday (so, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18 and 11/25). Let me know you're thinking about releasing it and I'll time it to the Monday accordingly. Fun!
