Hear hear. As a S Korean myself, I agree with all the points you made, and thank you for speaking up. Those who do not see any problem with Ssoyoung's animal cruelty videos and try to dismiss it as a "culture" simply never had the privilege of proper education. All animals of all intelligence level can feel pain and suffer. There is no argument about that. I work with various S Korean animal rights organizations, translating stories of activism, rescues, and the status quo of animal welfare in South Korea. Through my work, I realize how far we still have to go in strengthening our animal rights laws. We're making some progress with protecting our dogs and cats, but especially when it comes to invertebrates, humans still aren't so empathetic to them as they are to animals that are more familiar to us / the so-called "cute and fuzzy ones." Unfortunately, there are still very cruel practices in my home country where live octopuses, lobsters, shrimps, etc. are served on plates, steamed, or thrown into boiling water in restaurants, especially when you go to the seafood markets in Busan, a port city in the southeastern part of the country. The problem is, it will take any society some time to perceive certain age-old traditions and cultural practices as wrongdoings / a form of animal cruelty and reform. It took the state of California so long to finally ban the importation, production, and sales of real fur products, which finally took place in October 2019. Currently, the S Korean animal protection laws only defend vertebrates, and science is still discovering more and more about marine creatures, as they are not as familiar to humans as land creatures, but we know that all animals can feel pain. Crabs, lobsters, and octopuses are among myriad of species that have central nervous systems and CAN FEEL PAIN. It is clear that in Ssoyoung's videos, the fish suffocate very slowly, yet she tries to make it all seem comical. It is beyond ridiculous and sickening. The pitiful, sick things humans would do for attention, views, likes, and money... No animal, no matter how "intelligent" they are, no matter how much sympathy we feel towards them, should have to suffer as they do in Ssoyoung's videos. This is why EDUCATION and AWARENESS are key to preventing all forms of cruelty. Those who do not see any problem with Ssoyoung's acts of animal torture have been conditioned to think that way, but it doesn't mean they cannot learn and change. "In the name of culture or science" does NOT justify acts of cruelty, and we are so arrogant to assume that all cultural practices are ethical.

Yes! Finally an actual Korean who doesn't use the culture excuse. I've been an animal rights activist for so long and talked to many frustrated Koreans (and other Asians) about the cruel practices when it comes to food in their countries so I've known people like you exist. It seems it's mostly non Asians who use the culture excuse anyway lol. Don't know if you do but I see change. It's hard to be patient sometimes but I see it. Here in Europe too, many people started and start to question the things we do to animals. Thank you for your awareness, wisdom and the work you do!

FUN FACT (for anyone saying octopus/squid don't feel that pain). Cephalopods are incredibly intelligent, sentient and sensory creatures. In many countries, it is ILLEGAL to perform vivisection/lab testing on an octopus WITHOUT ANESTHETIC. Not even mice, primates, rabbits etc get the same strict regulations in many countries. Also, each tentacle in an octopus has it's own independent nervous system, essentially a "small brain", separate and independent from the central brain/CNS.... given the right conditions, some squids can even regrow parts of their head and grow new tentacles if chopped off/injured. When killed for food PROPERLY, they immediately die and go limp when their central brainstem is severed or their brain is traumatically injured. There are techniques to swiftly and humanely (as possible) kill an octopus without causing unnecessary pain and suffering. The way she cut these in half clearly did neither, as their suffering and "dancing" was paramount to the entertainment value of her videos. Yes, chemicals like sodium can cause leftover tension/energy in the tissues to move/spasm, making them APPEAR as if there's still life/sensation even when there isn't, that is true...BUT that's NOT all this was. The tentacles were still writhing around long before she even poured the soy on them, not to mention the fully living ones she chewed the legs off of. They were likely processing the immense agony and shock while the severed nerve endings were desperately trying to connect to their central nervous system. I'm so disgusted that KZread lets this cruel bullshit fly.

You guys see that doughnut shaped thing in the squids head? That’s it’s brain, she didn’t sever from its central nervous system, all she did was basically cut its torso off whilst it suffocates slowly and then pour (what would be scalding) substance onto AND into the squids open wound, eyes and very sensitive tentacles. If that doesn’t sound bad enough for any animal to have to endure, the squid is a very smart animal. It has the intelligence of about a 4 year old child and can feel fear and remember and anticipate pain. Imagine doing all of that, but to a 4 year old child and then watch this video again. Disgusting.

that part I understand, but the 2:56 part, the dead squids are moving because of the soy sauce interacting with ions in its muscles. Octopus tentacles are also a defense mechanism and continue to move on their own after being cut off.
