The Germany/Deutschland thing is from two Latin terms - Germani and Teutoni. Both were terms used by the Romans for different Germanic tribes, and different tribes' names stuck for the whole area in different languages - the Germans adopted a "Teutonic" variant, going from Teutschland to Deutschland, we English went for a "Germanic" variant, and others went for still more variants. The French, for instance, call Germany "Allemagne", from Alemanni, another Latin term for a Germanic tribe, and so an "Alemannic" variant. As for Austria/Österreich, in a proper German accent they sound quite a lot more similar and you can kind of see how our words are related. As you said, the word comes from Old High German (originally "Ōstarrīchi") and means "eastern realm" or "eastern kingdom", depending on how you want to translate it. You can see how we got "East" from a similar place to "Ōst", which then because "Öst" or "Aust". "rīchi" became "reich", though it's a little harder to find modern English analogues, but one interesting one is "rich". The stem word of them all is the Proto-West Germanic word *rīkī, meaning "powerful", "mighty", "rich", meanings whose connection is probably obvious!

a little bit late on this one, just want to correct some information. "deutsch" doesn't actually originate from the Latin word "teutonicus". It originates from the Old High German word "thiutisk" which developed to Middle High German "tiutsch" which then devoloped to Early New High German "teutsch" to today New High German "deutsch", meaning something like "belonging to the people". The connection between "deutsch" and "teutonicus" rather is a "back translation error" of writers in the Middle Ages, who (because they had to write in Latin) used the Latin word "teutonicus" to describe the Germanic people collectivly, eventhough the "Teutoni" were a distinct tribe and in the ancient times (almost) only referred to as such. So we Germans actually have a country name that originates in our own language, not some Latin derivation.

@sakarael_rex

@@josephrohrbach1588 sure, I don't mind. I myself thought for a long time that "teutonicus" was the origin of "deutsch". When I learned that this was actually wrong in my first semester of German studies, I was mindblown.

The difference in the calling of central European countries, especially Germany comes from the many different tribes that lived there before the establishment of the holy roman empire. The greatest tribe near a border would be what that adjoining region would call them. Neighbors to the north east call the Germans Tysks, those to the north east call them germans... derived from Germania. The French call them Allemand and Volks from Austria are essentially germans themselves... And because Australia is commenwealth and the brits call them germans, you call them that as well. Great video anyways!
