Hot take: Volk wasn't defeated because he wasn't ready. Islam made a very obvious read that volk drops his head to the left. That's how he landed the kick. Same read that Ilia made to land the hook.

That's part of the reason, Volk was just not ready for this fight Mentally and Physically. Mentally, because he took this fight for the sake of his mental health (ironic lol). It was pretty clear that he couldn't handle staying out of the Octagon any longer and was thinking this was his only chance at the LW belt ever again. Physically, because he looked like a pudgy sausage coming out. He didn't look in shape for the fight at all. Also dropping 28 pounds in 11 days isn't healthy (weight cutting sucks but it's the sports culture), and it clearly impacted his ability to take a punch and in this case a kick. Max dropped him with the same kick in their second fight all right but he recovered fast. I think Volk knows he has a compromised chin and Ilia has sensational knock power. So he was backing away more than usual and of course out of habit drops his hands. Topuria was throwing singular shots, and when he threw the first combo he had Volks number.

I think Khabib runs through Conor every time even if he never left to box tbh. Everybody trained their takedown defense for Khabib and none of them could keep him off other than a clearly juiced Tibau. Even if Conor stuffs 10 takedowns Khabib is going to have the stamina to shoot until he gets him down. Of course everyone has an off switch and Conor is great at finding those shots, but Khabib’s style helps minimize those opportunities for his opponents.

Any of these ' Could Connor McGregor have beaten X?' questions could (within reason) conceivably be answered with a yes. He had a punchers chance against anyone at 145 or 155. He was a very accurate and powerful counterpuncher with a big left hand. But that's all he was. And that's the issue. He didn't have multiple avenues to winning fights because he wasn't well rounded and didn't have much a of a gas tank. So if he didn't land that left in round one or two, especially against a human boa constrictor like Khabib, his chances of winning basically went to zero. The only real exception to this was the second Diaz fight, which was still very close despite Diaz not being a championship level fighter.

Robbie is a bigger human being than Conor. Conor’s knock outs are all in lower weight classes except for against an old Cerrone. I honestly think the Robbie that beat Rory kills McGregor. Robbie has KO’ed Melvin Manhoef who is an elite kickboxer who has knocked out Mark Hunt! So basically he has faced power way be on Conor’s.

Connor can't exactly wrestle to the level Khabib can. Actually, Connor can't really wrestle to the level of any of the guys he fought. So many of the fights he won were won because they tried to outbox him, which credit to Connor, he took advantage of and won easily. But against an amazing boxer like Porrier where he tried to just box him, he lost. Khabib only lost one round in that fight which is the round he took off and tried to box him. Khabib is, bar Jon Jones and maybe GSP, the most talented fighter we've ever seen. Connor was breaking multiple rules to even make himself competitive on the ground, not to mention assaulting his bus and insulting his father. So, to wrap this up, Connor just wasn't in my eyes equipped to handle Khabib.
