What I find insidious about it is how Google attempts to rewrite history by showing politically correct results vs. what actually happened. One day we might have a whole generation of people who only use search engines to find out about the world. These people will be presented with the world based on what the powers that be want them to believe.

    Also, from a business/corporate standpoint: IE can be used to access old legacy sites that havent been updated in years. Edge had an "IE Mode" but what it did was open up the old IE even if you cant run it normally. What did those business do? Well, they found they could just pin the IE app on the taskbar and then use Chrome for all other uses. Thats why the new Edge (with the Wave) is actually built on Chromium (Chrome's engine), and it has a built-in "IE Mode" to access those old corporate sites, so that Microsoft can fully get rid of this undying abomination.

    For PC I switched to Firefox recently because chrome was using too much memory. Admittedly I put my rig on sleep mode a lot so that contributes to the issue but even if you close out chrome unless your computer shuts down completely chrome still allocates the same amount of RAM. So I would find Chrome utilizing like 3.5-4gbs of memory. That's definitely a recent occurrence though, I'd still be using chrome probably if I hadn't run into that issue and I've upgraded my memory recently so I could probably migrate back but I'm too lazy to and firefox honestly runs fine when you get used to it.

    the thing with chrome is that it's google, it pushes itself the way IE used to before Microsoft's browser was beaten into submission once it faced competition with similar financial backing on PC. it also tracks tf out of you and i don't like it, so i use firefox with an adblocker and tracker blocker installed. anything that "needs" chrome can usually be done through opera which is much more secure. malware etc also tends to be worst with the dominant browser to maximize potential targets, so firefox and opera being comparatively small is also sort of a blessing in that regard. i can trust both browsers just a little bit further than their profit motive.

    True story: I worked for AOL doing tech support. People back then didn't know much about computers of course. I had a guy talking about trouble installing his AOL CD and apparently he didn't know the difference between a floppy disk and a CD. He had a 3.5 inch floppy he was trying to put into his CD drive. I had to legit ask him if he had "round CD or a square CD" to figure out what he had.

    Yahoo lives on because of it's semi transition to news. Comparatively to other popular news sites, its friendly and easy to manage and change. As far as browsers, pro-users use Firefox for the customization, seamless browsing use chrome for the ease, and n00bs or corporate/government people use IE for compatibility. Edge came along because Microsoft needed to replace flash player and other out to date plugs.

    Chrome became the new "also install this" scheme for basically every software, because Google owns everything or has enough money to do that. it's so clunky and a data hog and no one realizes it still. Firefox is the browser you CHOOSE to use, Chrome is the new IE but it's obviously at least better than that.

  • @Igneusflama

    @Igneusflama

    Chrome's memory hog status is actually a misconception. Google takes a lot of memory but is going to share it with anything that asks. Rather than memory sitting unused, Google hangs onto it to speed itself up. If something else needs that memory, Google gives up those "speed up" bits of memory. Chrome has actually become more memory efficient than other browsers by not keeping tabs you don't need active, but it still LOOKS like a memory hog because task manager only tells you the total memory used.

    From the web developer perspective: Google Chrome is literally new IE. It was a relief to break free from IE dominance, and now we are back where this shit started. A big corpo, a browser that introduces a non-standard features and the need for a cross-browser support. Also, I believe that Chrome bar in the chart includes other chromium-based browsers as well as mobile Chrome.

    @@ivewor5283 from the top of my head that would be backdrop-filter, scrollbar customization and flex box behavior in general. I ate a barrel of shit trying to make a flex layout made for Chrome to work properly in FF too. That was a couple years ago tho. About a year ago we had a weird scrolling issue when Chrome placed a padding between the scrollbar and the border and FF didn't. Fun part is that first fix attempt made it reverse. Now that I've said that, I remember Chrome being anal about align-items value, refusing to understand `end` and demanding it to be `flex-end`, something along these lines.
