Hi Mia, I speak Spanish but I am guessing that "como estás tu" is wrong? No, I'm wrong!! Portuguese is a beautiful language, it sounds so smooth!

It’s great to finally find someone who teaches European Portuguese, who understands that some of the lesson needs to be in English! I’ve been searching for a long time to find a podcast or KZread channel that teaches European Portuguese to English students.. but unbelievably (to me at least) pretty much all of them have the video/podcast title in English, but then only speak Portuguese! (Which is pointless for someone who can’t understand but wants to learn). I learnt (intermediate) Spanish years ago using just podcasts that are in teacher / English student format (coffee break), and this is the closest I’ve found to the same in Portuguese. Big thank you! I will be watching many more of your videos :)

I disagree. Why do instructors of other languages need to speak English to explain things? I prefer when the instructor speaks only in the language he or she is teaching; you learn more that way. If you already know English, you learn very little about the other language if the instructor is explaining everything in English. Not productive. Not to mention that explaining things in English while teaching another language excludes all the audience who does not speak English but want to learn the other language.

Em françês é a mesma coisa: "O que é que farás esta tarde?" --> "Qu'est-ce que tu feras ce soir?"

Em Moçambique usamos o " olá, como estás?" para nos dirigirmos a alguém com quem temos intimidade ou confiança e "olá, como está" que não vem aí mencionado para uma pessoa que é ou mais velha, ou não temos intimidade

Eu estudei português por alguns anos e nunca encontrei essa regra sobre a inversão do sujeito, acho interessante

So refreshing to hear a proper neutral european accent, and not that "suburban ghetto" accent of Lisbon we hear every youtuber and news reporter use more and more often (nor the thick nord accent). A massive thumbs up for helping to mitigate that nauseating "urban myth" brazilians like to propagate that we portugue speak like we're rapping and that we eat all the vowels and half of the words. Not everyone in Portugal is a chunga, azeiteiro or grunho; many of us (still) speak properly and with a normal cadence. Keep up the good work! :)

Muito obrigado professora👍🏻. this is probably the best explanation of this topic in youtube. As a learner i also find "é que" a great addition to the language. Yes it's a bit hard for new learners but i think it's kind of a signature to the language and makes it even more beautiful

Sou brasileiro e eu vim até aqui porque tenho muita curiosidade em saber como pessoas de língua inglesa aprendem a fazer perguntas em português. Acho que deve ser um grande desafio Já que as perguntas em português dependem da interpretação da voz e não de palavras específicas com o "Do / Does".

Hi Mia, “Olá, como tu estás” is incorrect. Also, if I may add, “é que” translated actually DOES make sense in English in some cases. Except to save energy, we tend not to use it. But it’s perfectly acceptable to say something like “What is it that you do.” Thank you for these videos I’m learning so much! I love that you put the words on the screen too, that’s sooo helpful!

Ótimo vídeo! :) Imagino que, no português europeu, é errada a sequência “sujeito + verbo” logo após advérbio ou pronome interrogativo sem a locução expletiva “é que” apenas nas interrogativas diretas. Nas indiretas, tal ordem é aceitável (como em inglês), não é? “Quero saber como tu estás.” (“I want to know how you are.”) está tão correto quanto “Quero saber como estás tu.”, certo?

Para mim é mais fácil inverter do que acrescentar o "é que", especialmente quando escrevo. É mais curto! Já conheco algo parecido em francês: "est-ce que".

I got here from a RedIt on "E que", but I thought / eu pensei que \ "e que" was used like (a-thinking-phrase)... so if you asked me, "Did you know about that" I would say, "sim, mas.... *e que*... nao sabia que seria tão ruim" (off the top of my head... this is my example, neh). Thoughts?

It can also be used as you say, when you are thinking...but here I was just covering its use with wh-questions :) but you are right! It can also be used so 😊

Esta inversão apenas acontece em perguntas que começam com uma pergunta qu (wh-question). Senão a inflexão da voz é o que se tem que fazer :) Isso é diferente em Inglês...Obrigada pelo teu comentário :)

@@rrs_13 peço desculpa, mas aqui discordamos. Neste caso, é “senão” e não “se não”. Normalmente o "senão" representa uma contrapartida. É usado como "caso contrário", "mas sim", etc. O "se não" é usado como conjunção e indica condição, como em "caso não" ou "quando não". Em exemplos mais "normais" é possível perceber bem a diferença entre eles: Se não fizeres os trabalhos de casa, não podes ir brincar OU Faz os trabalhos de casa, senão não podes ir brincar. Consequentemente, concordará também que é, no mínimo, gramaticalmente "deselegante" - ou melhor, incomum - iniciar uma frase com "senão" quando este não é um substantivo (existe uma óbvia propensão à perda do significado da(s) frase(s), na minha opinião). Também creio que concordaremos que a palavra não está a ser usada como preposição. Assim, concordo quando menciona que usa a palavra como conjunção; tem razão quando diz que "Senão" é adequado para o significado que pretende veicular: _"A inversão acontece(...), senão a inflexão é o que se tem de fazer."_ No entanto, creio que irá concordar também quando digo que a conjunção condicional "se não", admitindo a omissão do verbo "acontecer", é igualmente aplicável (e a meu ver, algo mais indicada\elegante quando empregue no início da frase): _"A inversão acontece (...). Se não (acontecer), a inflexão da voz é o que se tem que fazer."_ Como tal, peço desculpa por ter sido precipitado no meu entendimento, o qual foi talvez enviesado pela minha experiência pessoal em ver menos frequentemente "senão" como preposição no início de uma frase. Yes, this is quite a difficult topic. Bottom line, when in doubt use "é que" :)

Olá, it is a bit confusing about the word order in the questions. For example, "A que horas é que ela chega?" BUT "A que horas é que chega a tua prima?" OR "A que horas é que a tua prima chega?" Which one is correct? Another example, " Quanto é que custa este livro? OR Quanto é que este livro custa?" "Quem é que é aquele homem? OR Quem é que aquele homem é?" Quanto é que ele custa? Quem é que ele é? They are correct. I have noticed that both of nouns and pronouns have different order after "é que" in the questions.

I‘m German with portuguese roots ( father is portuguese/angolan) it‘s really hard to find EU portuguese videos on KZread so thank you for making these but tbh the grammar isn‘t that easy, speacially „é que“ is kind of confusing 😅, by the way do you know any portuguese tv shows with english subtitle?

You’re welcome 😉 I know grammar is not so easy and this “é que” is one of the hardest concepts to understand. But keep going 😊 About Portuguese shows with English subtitles.. I’m not sure, unfortunately. There are not a lot out there, but I’m thinking of making some research and making a video about it. There are some options for Portuguese with Portuguese subtitles. If you have access to KZread, the Portuguese show “Conta-me como foi” has Portuguese subtitles I believe and you can also find it in RTP.pt and in there I know there are Portuguese subtitles, I’m just not sure if you can access from where you are. Let me know if this helps 😊

Why do you pronounce the last letter of 'comes' sometimes as 'z' and sometimes as 'sh'? Isn't it only 'sh' in European Portuguese? And why is it considered an obstacle to invert the subject and the verb for questions? Even in a simple language as English is it done and in almost all languages, I suppose.

*sigh* Again, it's accepted grammar in Brazil, but not Portugal. Then again, Brazilian Portuguese doesn't use the second-person singular form of the verbs, so . . . . There is something in the back of my mind about why you should have that "é que" construction, or something similar, and not have the personal pronoun before the verb, but what I am thinking involves grammar from a different Indo-European language. I think it is applicable here. However, I need to think about it and, again, try to find it in some texts. Very nice video, by the way, and thanks as always.

This video although after one year learning Portuguese I understood but it was difficult to follow a little bit tricky to decipher due to information overload.
