Yesterday (ironically on Father's day) I had a breakthrough with my father. He never supported me in my pursue of psych degree and he always belittled the science itself. Unfortunately my mum has metastatic lung cancer, they just sold their house and are moving to a new one, his work is also stressing him out. He kept taking xanax (benzo) daily and he started developing symptoms such as forgetting to lock doors, misplacing items, insomnia, impulsivity etc. He called me and opened up about these things!!! We never had such a deep, genuine conversation and he had never asked for my help before. He always had the toxic masculinity mindset of "men cant show negative emotions" and never asked for any help, especially not from his own child. I happily referred him to a really good psychotherapist and im happy to say he is really keen on getting better. He now believes in what I do and it feels so good. This is what I always wished for (not the part where he is suffering but where he sees the beauty and importance of this profession). Sorry for the tangent, I just really wanted to share. Love your content as always❤

I totally agree with you Dr. Ali. My parents disagree when I say "I want to study Psychology" because they think I'll work with "crazy people" And eventually become crazy myself. After all, I'll follow my passion of helping adolescents with their healing journey 😊 Happy Father's Day!

Sir I am currently 15 y/o, I want to be a clinical psychologist but I am not very good at natural science i am currently learning humanities (arts / social science) and am not very social able. So do you think it's a good field for me, if yes then what sort of courses or studies will be good?

Thank you for sharing Dr.Ali! I'm an MFT and have a similar dynamic with my father who is gaining more awareness about mental health. My heart goes out to you as my brother struggles with his mental health as well. Thank you for sharing such a sweet and vulnerable moment with your father. It gives me hope for the continued growth of my family of origin. 😊

Im little late but happy father's day to both of you. 🤗 My son was diagnosed with bipolar at 7. He's 13 now and I am so thankful that I have fought to keep him in therapy. Its been hard.. so hard but it's getting better.. Im sorry to hear about your brother. May his soul rest in peace. 🙏🏻 I lost my 2 month old daughter from sids. Its a pain that never leaves and it changes you... sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worst. But To hear your dad talk about your brother was heartbreaking... i can't imagine losing my child like that. As i mentioned my son is bipolar and we have to anything dangerous like kitchen knives lighters and etc locked up. He has been doing so good even thru covid pandemic.. but I keep him on his meds and video chat with his psychiatrist and consulars on the regular. Its just a part of our lives. He gets frustrated but I explain that justLike children living with physical disabilities.. they need doctors to help them.. he needs doctors to help him with his mental health.

With how much talk there is around race and privilege going on right now, I love how Anwar handled the news that the Indian actor in Short Circuit was actually a white actor wearing Black Face. Even though I’m white and I was horrified to hear this information, about to be upset, and Anwar pops up and says “well he did a good job!” Instead of choosing to jumping to be angry, offended or upset, he chose to say something simple, yet positive. I think it’s a lesson we can all learn from. Instead of going on the defensive and becoming upset in a situation similar to this where someone/some group is saying or doing something potentially offensive, we could try to stay positive and look above the situation, and not take it so seriously. Maybe the person/group doesn’t know what they did even offensive. We can’t expect the world to know what we find offensive by reading our minds, so maybe we could try to assume they don’t mean to be offensive. Just some food for thought!

Unrelated to the video (which the video is great btw!) But I look fairly young, I'm 18 and look about 14 years old. Would this in any way affect me in becoming a therapist? Sounds like a silly question, I know. But when people think of therapists they think of older and more professional looking people and I worry that when I begin to try and pursue this career I won't be taken seriously because of just how young I look. Is this me overthinking? 😂

Hey just coming from a soon to be graduating psychologist with a bit of a baby-face, don't worry about it! If you can show depth and experience in the way you communicate then if anything it's a bonus, clients (and particularly other young individuals, adolescents etc) may even feel more comfortable speaking to you later on when you're qualified if you just naturally have a youthful/approachable appearance. Everyone's different, don't let it stop you!
